Put them on when the car is new so you can take them off in a few years and the seats will be in good condition for resale?

Or wait until the seats are gnarly and then put them on?

Absolutely when new.  Also works great with couches.

cheap vinyl covers go on immediately, and get replaced annually.

People use to put those lamb skin covers over new seats. Time, heat and moisture would cause a reaction that would ruin the car seats. Saw and experienced it first hand. Be careful covering your new seats with any material.

Cover after the seats are shot

Take care of your seats and you will likely never need covers (but for children, dogs, or other animals). Even then, cleaning and treating your seats generally negates the need for covers.

But if I had to do covers, I wouldn’t do them until I needed them.

I put Wet Okoles on when I got the vehicle.

9yrs ago.

Wet Okoles still mint.

Seats beneath, also still mint.

I put seat covers on my Jeep right after buying in '13.  Took them off a couple weeks ago (for the first time) when detailing the interior and the seats still looked like brand new.

Took a pressure washer to clean up the seat cover (driver's side).

When new, keeps seats like new.

You don't think someone will look under the covers on a beater, and reduce offer accordingly?

I prefer to sit in the seats I paid extra for.

Keeping the seats nice for trade in value… isn’t there a joke about that one?

New. Why would you hammer your seats and then put them on? The idea is to protect the seats not cover your mistakes. Easier to throw seat covers away with dead hooker DNA than replace the seat.

I'm a normal human who doesn't trash seats, so no cover

Temp extremes can be tough on leather, and amazingly few people bother to treat them. BMW makes a great leather polish, I've used it for years. Pricey, huge surprise, but worth every penny.

We do the Orvis dog covers for the back seats in the 4Runner, and treat the pleather in front. I'll give Toyota credit, SofTex is good shit.

My 20 year old suburban has a split down the driver's seat bottom (leather). Is it possible to sew this? Replacements are kinda expensive.

I choose to enjoy my leather interior while doing what I can to keep it in good condition.  When it needs to be replaced, a new set of Katzkin

Never really understood the point of seatcovers unless you are being unusually harsh to your vehicle's interior.  Dogs go in the back of the car or in the bed of the truck.

What are you charging for a hair cut these days?

The Barbara that used to cut my hair drove the same.

I have two kids - the seat covers went on as soon as I got the car.

My old beater? Weather tech mats only after my original floor mats got trashed.

Either way they at least make some sense. Remember the car bra everyone used to have? Looked like shit so you didn’t have any little nicks in the paint.
