CENTCOM warns of environmental disaster if ship sinks.

The Rubymar

Highlights
A cargo ship damaged by a Houthi missile and abandoned in the Red Sea is slowly taking on water, the U.S. military said early Saturday.

CENTCOM said in a statement early Saturday that the damage to the vessel had created an 18-mile oil slick. The command called it an “environmental disaster” that could get much worse if the tens of thousands of tons of fertilizer the ship was carrying were to spill into the Red Sea.

The Rubymar is currently partly submerged ship was still afloat and would soon be towed to Djibouti or Aden, a port city in Yemen. Its remaining cargo would be transferred to another ship and sent to Bulgaria.

After the Rubymar was hit, its crew issued abandoned ship.  A coalition warship responded, and the crew was taken to Djiboutii by a merchant vessel in the area, a Central Command statement said.

The port officials also said that the 41,000 tons of fertilizer the Rubymar was carrying is classified as “high consequence dangerous goods” for its combustion risk by the International Maritime Organization, the U.N. body that regulates global shipping.

On Feb. 18 between 9:30 p.m. and 10:40 p.m., Iran-backed Houthi terrorists attacked the M/V Rubymar, a Belize-flagged, UK-owned bulk carrier. The ship is anchored but slowly taking on water. The unprovoked and reckless attack by Iran-backed Houthi terrorists caused significant damage to the ship, which caused an 18-mile oil slick. The M/V Rubymar was transporting over 41,000 tons of fertilizer when it was attacked, which could spill into the Red Sea and worsen this environmental disaster. The Houthis continue to demonstrate disregard for the regional impact of their indiscriminate attacks, threatening the fishing industry, coastal communities, and imports of food supplies.

WSJ: U.S. Conducts More Strikes Against Houthi Targets in Yemen

They finally killed the helicopter, should have been bombed the day the Houthis used it in an attack, but at least now it's gone.

The strikes Saturday hit a number of Houthi targets, including underground weapons storage facilities, other missile storage facilities, one-way attack drones, air-defense systems, radars and a helicopter.

Highpoints
The U.S. and the United Kingdom conducted a series of strikes at 18 Houthi targets at eight different locations inside Yemen Saturday.

The strikes hit a number of Houthi targets, including underground weapons storage facilities, other missile storage facilities, one-way attack drones, air-defense systems, radars and a helicopter, according to a statement issued by the Pentagon.

Saturday’s operation marked the fourth time since last month the U.S. has conducted the larger, strategic joint operations with the U.K and the other nations against multiple targets at one time.

The Houthi problem has presented deep challenges to the U.S....as it  tries to deter the group—which is armed, funded and supported by Iran—from further attacks..[lately] the group’s attacks have become more audacious.

That includes an attack against one U.K.-owned ship that injured a crew member, and another that nearly struck another ship, the U.S.-owned M/V Sea Champion, on its way to delivering humanitarian aid to Yemen.

...Feb. 18 the M/V Rubymar...was hit and is now at risk of sinking in the Gulf of Aden. That ship had to be abandoned by its crew. It is now anchored but taking on water and poses a serious environmental danger...as it is carrying 41,000 tons of fertilizer, which could end up contaminating the Red Sea.

[Also on Saturday] the USS Mason, a guided-missile destroyer, shot down an antiship ballistic missile that was launched into the Gulf of Aden by the Houthis and appeared to be targeting the MV Torm Thor.

Times of Israel article on recent actions in Gaza.

The IDF is still being attacked by insurgents from varioius Palestinian groups in and around Gaza City in neighborhoods that were among the first to be occupied by Israel in October and November.  IDF engineers continue to find tunnels in northern Gaza.

Had Israel listened to Lloyd and Blinken in December and switched to General McChrystal-style special operations units supported by air power, the problem would be much worse than it is today.  Clearing Gaza the right way means:  eliminating as many Hamas fighters as they can, concentrating on leaders and their key subordinates; finding and destroying critical tunnels; capturing as many arms and as much ammunition as possible; and developing and improving existing means of gathering intel will take time, troops, money, and support.  It can't be done with what Team Brandon calls precision strikes.

Highpoints
Troops nabbed several members of terror groups hidden among civilians evacuating from combat zones in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis,  illustrating the challenges of fighting in the crowded territory as Israel comes under increasing criticism over mounting threats to Palestinian civilians.

The deaths of two soldiers brought Israel’s death toll in the lengthy ground offensive to 240, as troops continued to battle in various hotspots around the Strip, with a looming offensive into the far southern Gaza city of Rafah put off for the time being.

Intense fighting is still ongoing in Khan Younis, some five kilometers (3.5 miles) north of Rafah. According to the IDF...Hamas and other terror groups are embedding themselves within the civilian population, endangering noncombatants.

Troops raided a number of sites, finding weapons, explosives, grenades, rifles, and other military equipment. A rocket launcher and a long-range projectile were found hidden in a refrigerator in a medical lab.  The IDF also confirmed it had wrapped up a “precise and limited operation” at Nasser Hospital, where some 200 terror suspects were nabbed.

Israeli hostages had been previously held at Nasser Hospital, according to testimonies from released captives and interrogated terror suspects.

Fighting also raged in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City, an area previously conquered by troops but where forces have recently been redeployed.

An AFP reporter said there were a number of airstrikes on Saturday evening in Rafah, a city along the territory’s southern border with Egypt where hundreds of thousands of Gazans have fled to escape fighting elsewhere.

Israel’s global allies have voiced deep concerns over the harm an offensive [into Rafah] could cause, with the city full [of] civilian refugees.

Rafah has swelled in size in recent weeks. Hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians have splayed out across the town in tents or at the homes of friends or relatives. The estimated 1.5 million people sheltering there — more than half of Gaza’s population — have nowhere to flee in the face of an offensive.

Israel says it must take Rafah to ensure Hamas’s destruction.

Jerusalem Post:  Hamas 'could not have anticipated' Israel's response to October 7, official says

The Hamas official giving the interview is Abu Marzouk.  He was a green-card holder and US resident for 14 years.  He has a Master"s Degree from Colorado State and  PhD from Louisiana Tech. In 1995, after he was elected to as Hamas's Politica! Bureau Chief, he was arrested while trying to return to the US and spent 2 years in jail and was expelled from the US. He currently lives in Doha, Qatar.  He is famous for telling an Arab language reporter that the tunnels in Gaza were built for Hamas's exclusive use and civilians in Gaza were the responsibility of the UN.

Highpoints
Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouk claimed that Hamas did not anticipate Israel’s response to its October 7 massacre, according to a translation of an interview given to Egypt’s Alghad TV on Thursday by the Middle East Media Research Institute.

[D]id [the militant and political wings of Hamas in Gaza] have any expectations regarding the consequences of the attack?” Marzouk responded that nobody had anticipated Israel’s response.

“Nobody in the whole world expected them to be so barbaric,” Marzouk said. “And in such violation of all international laws, treaties, and norms. Nobody expected the [Israeli response] to be so barbaric because, ultimately, the resistance fights soldiers. It is not fighting civilians with planes and tanks.”[Unless, of course, you are a 9-month old Jewish baby with red hair, we all know how sneaky they are.  Add in the 87 year old great-grandmother and there is no telling what evil schemes they would have come up with].

[Abu Marzouk] claimed in October that terror tunnels had been constructed to protect Hamas terrorists and that it was Israel's and the United Nation's responsibility to protect Palestinian civilian lives.

The interviewer..askied “What would you have done if you had expected these consequences?”

Ignoring the question...Marzouk said, “Nobody expected that the Western powers, the US and Britain, would wage a war against civilians. Nobody had expected that.

Taking the initiative, Marzouk asked the interviewer: “Do you think that anyone in the world could have expected there to be a world war? In the sense that America, Germany, Britain, France, Italy, and Spain – all of them would gather armies, and the US would send two of the largest aircraft carriers to the Mediterranean Sea, all in order to fight a movement? [Well Abu Shithead, that's a good question.  Only problem is the two men best able to answer it, Osama Bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri are dead.  Something about seeing innocents murdered tends to upset the Crusader nations.  Strange.]

“By what logic could anyone have expected that the US and the entire West would unite without exception to wage war against a movement? Who could have expected this?" [Well, you guys did, otherwise why spend hundreds of millions of dollars and loot construction supplies to construct your underground city?]

Washington Post:  As Lebanon teeters on the edge, a war with Israel would be catastrophic

Highpoints
Even before the Israel-Gaza war, Lebanon was in economic crisis: Since 2019, the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) has fallen by 50 percent, and poverty now plagues 80 percent of the population.

Wages for Lebanon’s soldiers have fallen so low that many now have second jobs driving for Uber or working as parking valets.

The United States is pushing for Hezbollah to move its troops well north of the Israeli border to de-escalate tensions, and this hinges on a strong Lebanese army having an increased presence in the area.

The army is already relying on substantial foreign funding to pay, feed and medically treat soldiers. Although it has received military aid from the United States totaling more than $3 billion since 2006, the needs are still immense.

The United States sent $72 million in 2023 alone for temporary financial support of salaries. That same year, Qatar donated $30 million in fuel and, in 2022, sent $60 million for salaries, as well 70 tons of food. France has provided medical equipment.

The signs of disintegration are everywhere. The country has been without a president for more than a year, and a functioning government for almost two, and the currency has lost more than 90 percent of its value since 2019.

[After the 34 day war] in 2006, Lebanon received support from Arab countries, particularly oil-rich Persian Gulf nations, for reconstruction. This is not the case today, with ties to the gulf monarchies strained by Hezbollah’s increased regional presence.

On Jan. 7, travelers through Beirut’s airport saw the arrival and departure screens suddenly flash a message addressed to the powerful leader of Hezbollah: “Hasan Nasrallah, you will not have any supporters if Lebanon is drawn into a war for which you will bear responsibility.”

The message underlined the deep fear that Hezbollah’s current confrontation with Israel could explode into a new war — and showed how easy it was to hack vital transportation systems.

Key Takeaways:
Northern Gaza Strip
The Israel Defense Forces continued clearing operations in Zaytoun neighborhood, southeastern Gaza City.

The IDF Nahal Brigade (assigned to the 162nd Division) targeted Palestinian fighters, destroyed rocket launch sites, and located weapons during clearing operations in Zaytoun.

IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi held a situational assessment meeting in the northern Gaza Strip with the commanders of Southern Command and the 162nd Division.

Halevi stated that Israeli forces are returning to previously cleared areas in the northern Gaza Strip “based on better intelligence“ to ”deepen achievements“ against Hamas.

Palestinian militias continued to operate in Gaza City on February 25. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) fired rockets at an Israeli position east of Jabalia’s eastern cemetery.  The IDF 143rd Division directed an airstrike on a Palestinian squad operating a drone in Shati in northwestern Gaza City.  The 162nd Division completed a second round of clearing operations in al Shati refugee camp on February 15.

PIJ directed sniper fire targeting Israeli forces operating near al Dawla roundabout in Zaytoun. The al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, which is the self-proclaimed military wing of Fatah and aligned with Hamas in the war, fired rockets at Israeli forces south of Zaytoun.

Southern Gaza Strip
The Israel Defense Forces has continued to conduct clearing operations in western and eastern Khan Younis.

The IDF Givati Brigade (assigned to the 162nd Division) has operated in Abasan al Kabira and Abasan al Saghira in recent days.  The brigade seized a long-range rocket and launcher in a "medical laboratory" in the Abasan area, likely the Algerian Specialized Hospital in Abasan al Kabira.

The IDF 7th Armored Brigade (assigned to the 36th Division) detained Palestinian fighters hiding among and evacuating with civilians in western Khan Younis on February 25. The brigade also killed several Palestinian fighters and seized weapons.  IDF 98th Division forces killed a Palestinian drone squad in Khan Younis.

The IDF announced on February 25 that its 98th Division commando forces ceased operations at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.  Israeli forces detained over 200 individuals and seized weapons from the hospital.

Israeli media reported that the Israeli War Cabinet approved a measure allowing the direct flow of humanitarian aid into northern Gaza Strip on February 24. Channel 12 stated humanitarian aid will begin directly entering the northern Gaza Strip “in the next few days.”

Aid currently enters the Gaza Strip via the Kerem Shalom crossing at the southern end of the Gaza Strip and must travel near active fighting in Khan Younis and Zaytoun.

West Bank
Israeli forces clashed with Palestinian fighters at least six times in the West Bank.

Southern Lebanon and Golan Heights
Iranian-backed militias, including Lebanese Hezbollah, have conducted at least seven attacks from southern Lebanon into northern Israel.

Yemen
The USS Mason intercepted a Houthi anti-ship ballistic missile targeting US-flagged, owned, and operated oil tanker MV Torm Thor on February 24.  CENTCOM reported that neither the USS Mason nor the MV Torm Thor were damaged in the Houthi attack.

The United States and United Kingdom conducted 18 airstrikes targeting Houthi underground missile storage facilities, one-way attack drones, radars, air defense systems, and a helicopter in Houthi-controlled Yemen on February 24.

Times of Israel:  Hours before Hamas attack, IDF noticed dozens of terrorists activating Israeli SIMs

The two meetings early on Oct 7th--the first was at 0130 and the second 0500-with key security officials was first reported in December.  This additional data point--unusual increase in Israeli SIM cards in Gaza--is being reported for the first time.  It seems Hamas had done it before, which led the Israelis to conclud it was a drill.  Keep that in mind when you want to call Hamas and friends "retarded".

Highlights

At around midnight before Hamas’s October 7 onslaught, Israeli intelligence officials identified that dozens of terror operatives in the Gaza Strip had activated Israeli SIM cards in their phones, the Israel Defense Forces acknowledged on Monday,

The massacre in southern Israel was launched hours later, at 6:30 under the cover of a deluge of thousands of rockets fired at Israeli towns and cities.

An Israeli news outlet reported thousands of SIM cards were activated.  The IDF and Shin Bet denied there were thousands of activations, adding “several indicative signs accumulated, which included, among other things, the activation of only dozens of SIMs, which were activated in previous events in the past.  As previously published, on the night of October 7th, indicative signs were received for which situation assessments were conducted and operative decisions were made accordingly."

Devices with Israeli SIMs had been activated in the past which led Israeli intelligence officials to believe Hamas... was carrying out an exercise, and this was not seen as a definitive sign of a planned attack. They decided to continue consultations on the matter throughout the night.

It was reported that on the night between October 6 and 7, hours before the early morning assault, an email was sent from an IDF base on the Gaza border describing “certain signs coming from Gaza” about an imminent attack. At the same time, the Shin Bet security agency also saw signs that something was up.

At around 1:30 a.m. on October 7, the IDF Chief of Staff's office manager was updated about this by the Shin Bet, and then by the IDF general in charge of the Southern Command. At around 3:30 a.m., Halevi was awakened. He asked to arrange a telephone consultation in order to hold a situational assessment. That session took place some 90 minutes later.

The IDF’s operations chief arranged his own consultation..and found the same signs of an imminent attack and sought explanations as to whether this was a drill or a strategic operation against Israel set for the coming hours. That consultation concluded that no definitive explanation could be reached, and sought additional intelligence from the IDF’s 8200 signal intelligence unit.

At the 5:00 AM meeting, Halevi, the head of IDF operations and the Southern Command chief were updated on the signs of an imminent attack. Halevi...ordered that the Israel Air Force be updated and that the intelligence information be checked — including from a perspective skeptical of the then-prevailing assumption that Hamas was not interested in war.

Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva, the head of the Intelligence Directorate, was not involved in these October 6-7 consultations, as he was on vacation in Eilat. He has said that if he was consulted, he would have said it was an exercise by Hamas.

Israel had multiple sources of information on Hamas’s drills and other preparations for an assault in the weeks ahead of October 7, reportedly including a 2022 Hamas attack plan.

Key Takeaways:

Northern and Central Gaza Strip
The Israel Defense Forces announced that its 162nd Division uncovered a Hamas tunnel network connecting the Central Gaza Governorate to the northern Gaza Strip over the past several weeks.

The IDF Nahal Brigade and Yahalom combat engineering unit located at least 35 entrances to the 10-kilometer-long complex equipped with plumbing, storage rooms, bedrooms, and military equipmentt.  The tunnel passed under the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital in the central Gaza Strip and extended to al Isra University in southern Gaza City.

Hamas used the tunnel system to transfer personnel between the Central Brigade and Gaza City Brigade, particularly between the Zaytoun Battalion, the Nuseirat Battalion, and Sabra Battalion.

The IDF 162nd Division continued clearing operations in Zaytoun neighborhood, southeastern Gaza City, on February 26. The IDF 401st Brigade (assigned to the 162nd Division) “intensified attacks” in Zaytoun and killed over 30 Palestinian fighters.  The IDF Nahal Brigade (assigned to the 162nd Division) targeted at least 10 Palestinian fighters as part of the division-wide clearing operations in the Gaza City and Central Gaza governorates.

Palestinian militias claimed at least seven attacks targeting Israeli forces in their continued defense of southern Zaytoun on February 26.  Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), and the al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades claimed several mortar attacks targeting Israeli forces.

The Palestinian Mujahideen Movement targeted Israeli armor with rockets and anti-tank missiles in Zaytoun. Hamas, PIJ, and the National Resistance Brigades mortared Israeli armor and dismounted infantry in a combined operation on February 25

Southern Gaza Strip
The Israel Defense Forces continued to conduct clearing operations in western Khan Younis. Palestinian militias targeted Israeli forces operating in Abasan al Kabira, east of Khan Younis.

The IDF 7th Armored Brigade and Unit 414 directed airstrikes on Palestinian fighters operating in Khan Younis.  The IDF Givati Brigade (assigned to the 162nd Division) ambushed and clashed with fighters.

Palestinian militias targeted Israeli forces operating in Abasan al Kabira, east of Khan Younis, on February 26. Hamas targeted about 20 Israeli personnel with anti-personnel devices.  Hamas fighters targeted Israeli armor in the same area.  PIJ and the al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, which is the self-proclaimed military wing of Fatah and aligned with Hamas in the war, both claimed sniper attacks targeting Israeli infantry in eastern Khan Younis.

Palestinian militias conducted two rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip into Israel on February 26. PIJ fired a rocket barrage at the Kissufim military site.[35] The Palestinian Mujahideen Movement launched rockets at Reim.

Political Negotiations
Hamas Political Bureau Chairman Ismail Haniyeh met with the Qatari Emir to discuss ceasefire negotiations.

Israel reportedly agreed to a framework that would release up to 400 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 40 Israeli hostages and a six-week truce under the new proposal.  Haniyeh claimed Hamas had shown great “flexibility and seriousness” in its contacts with mediators about the deal on February 26 but accused the Israeli government of stalling.

West Bank
Israeli forces clashed with Palestinian fighters at least three times in the West Bank. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh resigned.

Southern Lebanon and Golan Heights
Hezbollah claimed that it intercepted an IDF Hermes 450 drone near Nabatiyeh, southern Lebanon, on February 26.  The IDF stated that its David’s Sling medium-range air defense system intercepted one of two surface-to-air missiles fired by Hezbollah targeting the drone.

The IDF conducted airstrikes targeting a Hezbollah air defense site that killed two Hezbollah fighters near Baalbek, Lebanon, following the incident.  This airstrike is the furthest airstrike inside Lebanon that Israel has conducted since October 7.

Hezbollah launched at least 60 rockets targeting an IDF site in the Golan Heights on February 26 in retaliation for the IDF airstrike near Baalbek.

The IDF killed senior Hezbollah commander Hassan Hossein Salami in southern Lebanon on February 26. The IDF described Salami as “commander of the Hajir sector” under Hezbollah’s Nasser unit and stated that Salami organized attacks targeting IDF bases near Kiryat Shmona.  Israeli journalists described Salami’s rank within Hezbollah as equivalent to a brigade commander.

Iraq
Several Iranian-backed Iraqi militias have signaled that they will resume conducting attacks targeting US forces in the Middle East.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq—a coalition of Iranian-backed Iraqi militias—halted its attacks targeting US forces following a one-way drone attack that killed three US servicemembers in northeastern Jordan on January 28.  Ashab al Kahf—an Iranian-backed Iraqi militia close to Harakat Hezbollah al Nujaba—released statements on February 23 and 25, respectively, vowing to continue conducting attacks targeting US forces in the Middle East as well as Israel.

Syria
Local Syrian sources reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps is trying to rebuild its military infrastructure in Deir ez Zor Province, Syria.

Local Syrian sources reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) is trying to rebuild its military infrastructure in Deir ez Zor Province, Syria, following the February 2 US airstrikes on Iranian and Iranian-backed positions. Four Iranian communications specialists entered Syria from Iraq and began installing advanced communications and surveillance systems on February 22.

Lebanese Hezbollah-affiliated al Mayadeen reported that the IDF conducted a drone strike around al Qusayr, Homs Province, on the Syria-Lebanon border on February 25.[73] The strike targeted two trucks suspected of transporting Hezbollah military cargo.

Yemen
US CENTCOM reported that it intercepted three Houthi one-way attack drones.

Houthi-affiliated media outlets reported that the United States and United Kingdom conducted airstrikes targeting Houthi positions north of Hudaydah on February 26.  TThe United States and United Kingdom has not claimed responsibility for any airstrikes in Yemen at the time of this writing.

Iran
The International Atomic Energy Organization disclosed to UN member states that Iran has reduced its stockpile of 60 percent enriched uranium since late October 2023.

Iranian media claimed that Iranian security forces killed a Jaish al Adl commander inside Pakistani territory on February 23.
Jaish al Adl is a Baloch Salafi-jihadi group that operates along the Iranian border with Pakistan. Iranian media described the commander as “the main perpetrator of recent terrorist operations in southeastern Iran.”  There has been an uptick in anti-regime militant activity in southeastern Iran since December 2023.

Feb. 26 Red Sea Update

On Feb. 26, between the hours of 4:45 p.m. and 11:45a p.m. (Sanaa time), U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces destroyed three unmanned surface vessels (USV), two mobile anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCM), and a one-way attack unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in self-defense. The USV and ASCM weapons were prepared to launch towards, and the UAV was over, the Red Sea.

CENTCOM forces identified the USVs and missiles in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, as well as the UAV over the Red Sea, and determined that they presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and to the U.S. Navy ships in the region. These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S. Navy and merchant vessels.

Haaretz | News Israel-Hamas War Day 144 | IDF Strikes in Lebanon After Rockets Launched at Northern Israel; Qatar 'Optimistic' About Hostage Deal Feb 27, 2024
RECAP: IDF strikes in Lebanon after Hezbollah attacked a northern Israeli base; Qatar 'optimistic' about hostage deal
Here's what you need to know on day 144 of the Israel-Hamas war:

■ Jordan's King Abdullah said that humanitarian aid to Gaza must be doubled to prevent a deterioration in a hunger crisis affecting over 2 million Palestinians.

■ The UN humanitarian office (OCHA) says the Israeli military had stalled a medical evacuation convoy in the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis, detaining a paramedic and forcing others to remove their clothes.

■ The Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson says that although they are optimistic about the ongoing Gaza mediation talks, there is no breakthrough to announce concerning an impeding cease-fire and hostage deal.

■ A Hamas official told Reuters that U.S. President Joe Biden's comments on a possible halt to the Gaza fighting are premature and do not match the actual situation on the ground. Reuters also reported that Hamas studies Paris truce proposal involving 40-day pause and hostage exchange, according to sources.

■ IDF strikes in southern Lebanon in retaliation for earlier rocket launches toward an Israeli military base.

■ Hezbollah said earlier Monday it retaliated for airstrikes near Baalbek by firing 60 Katyusha rockets toward an Israeli army division command in the Golan Heights

Times of Israel:  No longer afraid of sparking war, Israel takes gloves off against IRGC in Syria

A man checks the damage in an apartment in a residential buildling that was reportedly targeted by Israeli air strikes in the Kafr Sousa district of the Syrian capital Damascus on February 21, 2024

Highpoints:
Israel’s years-long air campaign against Iran-linked groups and weapons in Syria appears to have shifted into high gear in recent months, with strikes on high-value targets at a pace that is “changing the rules of the game,” according to experts.

Israeli attacks on Iran-sponsored weapons transfers and Tehran-backed militias go back to at least 2013, but the air force is now unleashing more frequent operations that include assassinations of Iranian officials. Those on the ground have taken notice.

In just the last few days, Israeli jets hit two members of the Hezbollah terror group traveling in a truck near the Syrian-Lebanon border Sunday morning, and bombed a residential building in an upscale neighborhood of the Syrian capital Damascus frequented by leaders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Since December, more than half a dozen IRGC officers have been killed in suspected Israeli strikes on Syria, including Iranian Brig. Gen. Seyed Razi Mousavi, a longtime Guards adviser in Syria slain in an Israeli airstrike on a suburb of Damascus.

Before fighting began in Gaza, killing members of the Quds Force — the IRGC’s expeditionary unit — or Hezbollah operatives, would have been considered a red line, liable to spark a war.

After October 7th, other fronts were opened by Iran-backed paramilitary groups against Israel.

With the region already plunged into conflict, Israel no longer needs to pull punches to the same degree.

Iranian military personnel on the ground in Syria number only in the dozens. The bulk of the forces controlled by the Islamic Republic in Syria, aside from Lebanese Hezbollah, are made up of foreign Shiite militias, imported mainly from Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Foreign Shiite fighters were imported with the explicit goal to “free Jerusalem,” that is, attack Israel.

The reinvigorated Israeli [air strike] campaign..put [the foreign fighters] on the defensive, and many of them were moved away from the Syrian Golan to other areas of the country. They can still theoretically launch missiles at Israel, but a ground attack on the border is no longer feasible.

An senior researcher in an Israeli think tank said, "Early in the war there were claims that Iran was increasing its presence in the southern Lebanon in preparation for another front with Israel. But after Israel launched a very intense aerial campaign in Syria, they were deterred."

The decision to systematically target IRGC officials is something new.  Israel has liquidated a number of Iranian officials in Syria in the past, including at least one general in 2015, killed together with senior Hezbollah figure Jihad Mughniye, but strikes against IRGC figures had not been carried out in such a methodical and brazen way as they are now, the experts said.

“It’s like taking a list [of top IRGC leaders] and crossing off the names one by one, "said one retired Israeli officer.

The IDF says the tunnel network, more than 10 kilometers long, passes under Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital and a nearby university, and reaches as far as the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City.

According to the IDF, the tunnel was used by both Hamas's Gaza City and Central Camps brigades, to move operatives between the areas.

The IDF says it discovered living quarters, bathrooms, and weapons depots in the tunnels, as well as the bodies of several Hamas operatives.

The IDF confirms it carried out strikes against Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon in response to the rocket barrage this morning on Mount Meron.
Sites hit by fighter jets included a Hezbollah compound and other infrastructure belonging to the terror group in Jibchit, Mansouri, and other villages in south Lebanon

The IDF struck a Hamas command center and a launcher used to carry out a rocket fire from the Gaza Strip on southern Israel yesterday morning, within several hours of the attack.

The IDF struck further Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, including the site from which a barrage of dozens of rockets were fired at the Golan Heights.

Sites targeted by fighter jets in Ayta ash-Shab included buildings used by the terror group.

The IDF reveals footage from the camera of a Hamas gunman, which was found after troops battled a group of operatives in northern Gaza, during which an Israeli soldier was killed last week.
Amid operations by the Nahal Brigade's 932nd Battalion in Gaza City's Zeitoun neighborhood on February 20, a Hamas cell opened fire at the troops from a building, killing Staff Sgt. Avraham Wovagen.

The battalion directed airstrikes on several Hamas cells in the area, including the gunmen that killed Wovagen.

Later in the day, the battalion raided the building from which the attack was carried out, and in it the soldiers located a cache of weapons, including anti-tank missiles, sniper rifles, and handguns, the IDF says.

Also among the items was a camera left behind by the Hamas operatives, which the IDF says "reveals the method of firing anti-tank missiles and the nature of the enemy's activity in the area."

The video shows Hamas operatives breaking a hole in a wall to later fire missiles through, and observing IDF engineering and other armored vehicles in the area.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad engineers targeted Israeli infantry by detonating a missile from an F16 that they had rigged as an improvised explosive device in a house near al Dawla roundabout in Zaytoun

IDF seeing an increase in attacks in Gaza City in neighborhoods that were among the first taken over at the start of the ground campaign.  Palestinian militias conducted over triple the number of attacks on Israeli forces in southern Gaza City as they did in Khan Younis Governorate on February 27.  Militants are used rocket propelled grenades, mortars, explosively-formed penetrators (EFPs), improvised explosive devices, and small arms in their attacks.

Key Takeaways:

Gaza City
The IDF 162nd Division continued its clearing operation in Zaytoun neighborhood, southeastern Gaza City, on February 27. Palestinian militias claimed at least 16 attacks in the same neighborhood.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is building a “well-controlled IDF highway” south of Zaytoun to enable “at least another year” of operations in the Gaza Strip.  The IDF has not officially commented on the construction.  A correspondent from Israel Army Radio, a media organization run by the IDF, said Israeli forces are also building three forward operating bases near the east-west road for future raids and operations in the Gaza Strip.

The IDF Nahal Brigade (assigned to the 162nd Division) killed a Palestinian militia squad with tank fire and destroyed Hamas buildings as part of the division-sized clearing operation.  The 401st Brigade (assigned to the 162nd Division) killed Palestinian fighters at close range, directed airstrikes targeting Palestinian fighters, and uncovered a weapons factory in Zaytoun.

The groups used rocket propelled grenades, mortars, explosively-formed penetrators (EFPs), improvised explosive devices, and small arms in their attacks.Palestinian Islamic Jihad engineers targeted Israeli infantry by detonating a missile from an F16 that they had rigged as an improvised explosive device in a house near al Dawla roundabout in Zaytoun.

The high number of attacks and the use of more sophisticated capabilities — such as EFPs — is inconsistent with an Israeli Army Radio journalist‘s characterization of the fighting on January 27 as “relatively [small in] scale.". Palestinian militias conducted over triple the number of attacks on Israeli forces in southern Gaza City as they did in Khan Younis Governorate on February 27.

The IDF 7th Brigade and 35th Paratrooper Brigade detained Palestinian fighters who tried to hide among evacuating civilians to escape Khan Younis. The 7th Brigade detained Palestinian fighters attempting a similar escape on February 25.  The IDF Maglan and Egoz special operations forces continued clearing operations in western Khan Younis over the last week.  The special operations forces raided a Hamas compound and seized a large amount of weapons in western Khan Younis on February 27.
PIJ fired a rocket barrage from the Gaza Strip targeting Ashkelon on February 27.[30] The rocket barrage caused damage to civilian infrastructure.

The IDF Gaza Division and Southern Command directed airstrikes targeting a Palestinian militia command center in the central Gaza Strip that Palestinian fighters used to direct rocket fire into Israel on February 26.

Iraq
Two Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)-affiliated sources told the New York Times that Iranian-backed Iraqi militias “fiercely resisted” IRGC Quds Force commander Esmail Ghaani’s orders in late January to halt attacks targeting US forces in the region.

The timeline of events indicates that Ghaani—not Iraqi leaders—was instrumental in convincing Kataib Hezbollah to pause attacks. Kataib Hezbollah responded to Iranian directives from Ghaani by announcing that it would “suspend attacks” on January 30—roughly 24 hours after the meeting with Ghaani on January 29.

Iraqi Shia clerics in Najaf may also lack the influence to convince Kataib Hezbollah to cease attacks. Kataib Hezbollah and Harakat Hezbollah al Nujaba are loyal to the Iranian supreme leader, not Iraqi Shia clerics in Najaf.

Ghaani’s visit to Baghdad illustrates both the extent of and limits to Iran’s control of its proxy network in the Middle East. Most of Iran’s proxies and partners in Iraq immediately ceased attacks following Ghaani’s directive, though it is possible additional pressure from the Iraqi government further reinforced Ghaani’s orders.

West Bank
Israeli forces clashed with Palestinian fighters at least three times in the West Bank on February 27.  Israeli forces killed a senior member in Palestinian Islamic Jihad‘s Tubas Battalion south of Tubas.

Lebanon/Golan Heights
Iranian-backed militias, including Lebanese Hezbollah, conducted at least ten attacks from southern Lebanon into northern Israel.  Lebanese Hezbollah launched approximately 35 rockets targeting an IDF base on Mount Meron that hosts air traffic control, radar, surveillance, communications, and jamming facilities.  The IDF said that the attacks did not cause any casualties or damage to the area.

IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said that Lebanese Hezbollah will "pay a very high price" for its continued attacks targeting northern Israel during a speech at the IDF 146th Division headquarters on February 27.

Iran and Yemen
The United States and the United Kingdom sanctioned Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and Houthi members on February 27.

US CENTCOM stated that it destroyed three surface naval attack drones and two mobile anti-ship cruise missiles in Houthi-controlled Yemeni territory on February 26 that were ready-to-launch in Houthi-controlled Yemen.  Houthi-affiliated media outlets reported on February 26 that the United States conducted airstrikes targeting Houthi positions north of Hudaydah.

Northern Gaza, specifically Zaytoun, is seeing more attacks on Israeli troops than central and southern Gaza.  Seven different militant groups are carrying out attacks.

Increase of attacks on IDF troops in northern Gaza in areas cleared twice before of militants
Palestinian militias have claimed at least 92 attacks targeting Israeli forces in Zaytoun, southeastern Gaza City, between February 19 and February 28.  At least seven Palestinian militias conducted attacks on Israeli forces in Zaytoun on February 27 and 28.

Palestinian militias have targeted Israeli forces with rocket propelled grenades, mortars, explosively-formed penetrators (EFP), improvised explosive devices, small arms, and rockets in Zaytoun since February 19.  These attacks are in response to the ongoing division-sized clearing operation targeting Zaytoun.

This high attack rate involving at least seven Palestinian militias using sophisticated military capabilities indicates that Palestinian fighters have retained military capacity in southern Gaza City despite two Israeli clearing operations there.

The militias likely infiltrated into previously cleared areas of southern Gaza City from the uncleared central Gaza Strip. The militias also likely reactivated dormant cells after the Israelis decreased the size of the Israel Defense Force (IDF) contingent in the northern Strip. The IDF said that Hamas’ Central and Gaza City Brigades transferred fighters between battalions through tunnel networks.

Hamas Political Bureau Chairman Ismail Haniyeh insinuated on February 28 that Israeli clearing operations in Zaytoun had failed, noting that Hamas’ continued attacks in Zaytoun are “the [fiercest] battles” despite Israel‘s 80-day “occupation.”

The 98th Division directed an airstrike on Palestinian fighters attempting an ambush of Israeli fighters.  Palestinian militias conducted at least five attacks targeting Israeli forces operating in central and western Khan Younis on February 28.

The IDF Givati Brigade (assigned to the 162nd Division) continued operations in eastern Khan Younis and directed airstrikes targeting two Palestinian fighters on February 28.  Hamas fighters pre-placed and detonated two EFPs targeting Israeli tanks operating in Abasan al Kabira on February 28.  Hamas and other Palestinian militias claimed small arms clashes with Israeli forces in Abasan al Kabira and north of the town.

Palestinian militias have claimed at least 92 attacks targeting Israeli forces in Zaytoun, southeastern Gaza City, between February 19 and February 28. This high attack rate involving at least seven Palestinian militias using sophisticated military capabilities indicates that Palestinian fighters have retained military capacity in southern Gaza City despite two Israeli clearing operations there.

The attacks in Zaytoun are in response to the ongoing division-sized clearing operation targeting Zaytoun. The IDF 162nd Division continued its clearing operation in Zaytoun neighborhood, southeastern Gaza City, on February 28.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) fired a rocket barrage from the Gaza Strip targeting Kissufim in southern Israel on February 28.

The IDF Gaza Division and Southern Command directed airstrikes in Central Gaza targeting eight “significant targets,” including a PIJ rocket launcher used to attack Ashkelon on February 27.

IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said on February 27 that Israel seeks to ensure displaced Gazan civilians have access to food, aid, medicine, and hospital facilities in a separate, safer zone before conducting ground operations in Rafah.

West Bank
Israeli forces clashed with Palestinian fighters at least five times in the West Bank on February 28.

Lebanon Golan Heights
Iranian-backed militias, including Lebanese Hezbollah, has conducted at least six attacks from southern Lebanon into northern Israel since February 27.  Hamas’ military wing said that it fired 40 rockets targeting two Israeli positions in northern Israel.  The IDF said that only 15 of the rockets that Hamas fired crossed into Israeli territory. One of the rockets damaged a home in the area.

Unspecified sources familiar with Lebanese Hezbollah decisionmaking told Reuters on February 27 that the group will stop attacks on northern Israel if Hamas agrees to a ceasefire.  Hamas is currently considering a proposal that would include a six-week truce with Israel.

Iran
The Sistan and Baluchistan Province prosecutor said that two unspecified “terrorist operatives” attempted to conduct attacks targeting Iranian security officials in Bampur on February 28.

This incident is part of an uptick in anti-regime militancy in southeastern Iran since December 2023. Jaish al Adl—a Balochi, Salafi-jihadi group operating along the Iran-Pakistan border—has conducted at least five attacks targeting Iranian security personnel.

Negotiations/Politics
Israeli negotiators are expected to leave Qatar on February 29 if there is no significant breakthrough in ceasefire talks, according to two Israeli sources familiar with the process.

Hamas Political Bureau Chairman Ismail Haniyeh gave a rare recorded public address at a conference in Beirut on February 28. Haniyeh claimed that Hamas has displayed flexibility in negotiations but remains ready to continue fighting.

He also warned Israel against imposing additional restrictions for Muslims on access to the al Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan and called on Palestinian residents of Jerusalem and the West Bank to march on al Aqsa Mosque on the first day of Ramadan, which begins around March 10.

Russian state media confirmed that Fatah and Hamas officials will meet in Moscow on February 29 to discuss the formation of a new Palestinian government.

Yemen
CENTCOM and an unspecified coalition warship shot down five Houthi one-way attack drones over the Red Sea on February 27.

Iraq-Russia
The Iraqi government may request a sanctions waiver to purchase spare parts for Russian-manufactured helicopters.

A Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee member cited by an independent Iraqi news outlet said that there is an “unannounced” effort to resolve the shortage of parts for Iraq’s Russian-made helicopters.

Hamas threatens to stop hostage deal, cease-fire negotiations following Gaza shooting incident
Health authorities in Gaza said on Thursday that Israeli fire on people waiting for aid near Gaza City had killed 104 Palestinians and wounded hundreds, with one hospital saying it had received 10 bodies and dozens of wounded patients.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' office said he "condemned the ugly massacre conducted by the Israeli occupation army this morning against the people who waited for the aid trucks at the Nabulsi roundabout".

The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry spokesperson Ashraf al-Qidra said the incident took place at al-Nabusi roundabout west of Gaza City in the northern part of the enclave.

The head of Kamal Adwan hospital in Gaza City, Hussam Abu Safieyah, said it had received 10 dead bodies and dozens of wounded patients from the incident west of the city.

"We don't know how many there are in other hospitals," Safieyah told Reuters by phone.

Hamas warned in a statement that the incident could lead to the failure of talks aimed at a deal on a truce and hostage release.

Report: Hamas Gaza chief tells the group 'has the Israelis right where we want them'
The Wall Street Journal reports that during a meeting of senior Hamas officials in Qatar earlier this month, they have a received a message from the group's leader in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar, saying: "Don't worry, we have the Israelis right where we want them."

According to the report, Sinwar updated his associates that the group's members in the Strip are in a "good condition" as they are prepared for the IDF's expected invasion into the southern city of Rafah.

Sinwar also said that the augmenting amount of civilians killed in Gaza adds international pressure on Israel to stop the war

WSJ:  Hamas Is Losing Every Battle in Gaza. It Still Thinks It Could Win the War.

Highlights--it's a very long article
Senior members of Hamas’s leadership in exile met in Doha, Qatar, earlier this month amid concerns...rnemy troops were killing dozens of militants each day as they methodically overran Hamas strongholds.

Then a courier arrived with a message from Yahya Sinwar saying, in effect: Don’t worry, we have the Israelis right where we want them. Hamas’s fighters, the Al-Qassam Brigades, were doing fine, the upbeat message said. The militants were ready for Israel’s expected assault on Rafah, a city on Gaza’s southern edge. High civilian casualties would add to the worldwide pressure on Israel to stop the war.

Hamas’s military wing in Gaza is waging an unequal fight with the strongest military in the Middle East. But Sinwar is playing a different game. His goal is for Hamas to emerge from the rubble after the war, declare a historic victory by outlasting Israel’s firepower, and claim the leadership of the Palestinian national cause.

The militants..changed their tactics since a short cease-fire in November. Hamas fighters..avoid large firefights and instead use small-scale ambushes—using tools ranging from rocket-propelled grenades to recorded voices of hostages to lure Israeli troops into traps.

The ambushes have little chance of holding territory against Israel’s armored maneuvers. But they’re tailored to Hamas’s limited capabilities, and to Sinwar’s war aim.

“It’s a very sound tactical logic,” said Eyal Berelovich, a civilian analyst for Israel’s armed forces and a military historian at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University. “Their strategic goal is to survive.”

Many in the IDF worry that their accumulation of tactical wins on the battlefield might not add up to a lasting strategic victory. After nearly five months of intense fighting, Israel is still far from its declared war aim of eliminating Hamas as a significant military and political entity.

Fighting the enemy is like a game of whack-a-mole,” said an Israeli reservist. “It will be very hard to destroy Hamas.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised a “total victory” that annihilates the radical Islamist group. Israel’s military defines its mission more cautiously: to reduce Hamas’s capabilities to a level where the group can never again launch an attack like Oct. 7.

Hamas leaders in Gaza have told Egyptian officials and the group’s political wing in exile that the Al-Qassam Brigades have lost at least 6,000 men killed, out of an estimated 30,000 fighters before the war. Israel says it has killed about 12,000 Hamas militants in Gaza so far, plus about another 1,000 during the fighting in Israel on Oct. 7.

Foreign intelligence officials believe the true losses are roughly in the middle. Military analysts say Hamas can recruit new fighters to replace its rank-and-file soldiers, but that replacing experienced commanders is more difficult.

Israel has so far lost 242 soldiers killed in Gaza, in addition to over 300 killed on Oct. 7.

Degrading Hamas’s capabilities is a realistic goal for Israel’s military, said Hussein Ibish, a scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute, a think tank in Washington. But sustaining it would require fully occupying Gaza, which would give Hamas a target for a never-ending insurgency, he said.

The deepening humanitarian crisis and the scale of destruction in Gaza have strained Israel’s relations with countries around the world, including with its closest ally, the U.S.

Israel is betting that its military can do enough physical damage to Hamas to win security for itself, outweighing the diplomatic cost of worldwide opprobrium. Hamas is betting that it can evade the Israelis’ best efforts to crush it, allowing it to regenerate and claim a political victory.

Early on, Hamas often sought to attack Israeli troops with platoon-sized groups of up to 30 men.  One group would try to block an advancing Israeli unit. Another group would attack it from the flank. The militants would try to inflict casualties, then disappear.

[After] the November pause, [Hamas] shifted to hit-and-run attacks by tiny groups of two or three men, sometimes just one individual.  The new tactics were observed throughout the Gaza Strip, indicating that..Hamas still had a functioning command-and-communications structure in the enclave.

The shift has reduced Hamas’s losses, but also the number of Israelis they are able to kill and wound. Ambushes usually involve a rocket-propelled grenade.  One fighter fires the RPG, a second man bears an AK-47 automatic rifle, and a third man wields a video camera for social media.  Hamas’s propaganda videos often end just as the RPG explodes, leaving it unclear how much damage was done to the target.

Other Hamas ambushes use so-called sticky bombs, improvised explosives that attach themselves to Israeli armored vehicles with magnets or duct tape.

Osher, a tank driver, recalled being wounded by a sticky bomb in Khan Younis. While his unit was searching for a tunnel shaft, a single Hamas fighter ran across the street and attached the bomb to the tank near the driver’s position. The force of the blast hit him through the armor. “Driver is OK,” Osher recalled saying, even though he wasn’t. “I couldn’t see or hear, I was concussed,” he said. He followed his training and drove the tank backward to a preplanned evacuation point.

Hamas kills Israeli troops by putting booby traps in buildings throughout Gaza.  Early on the explosives were placed around the buildings’ entrances. The Israelis.. instead blasted or bulldozed their way through the walls of a house. Hamas has adapted, placing explosive traps in items inside buildings, from gas storage balloons to children’s’ toys, Israeli soldiers said.

In some places, Hamas has tried to lure Israeli soldiers into traps by planting explosives in items belonging to Israeli hostages taken on Oct. 7.  In other cases, Hamas used voice recordings of hostages begging for help in Hebrew to try to draw soldiers into an ambush.

The scale of Hamas’s tunnel network distinguishes the fighting in Gaza from any other battles between regular forces and Islamist militant groups in recent history, say military analysts.

Hamas uses the tunnels as military headquarters, to maneuver across the enclaves’ cities, protect its leaders, hide Israeli and other hostages, manufacture weapons and conduct hit-and-run attacks. “Until you take all of this away from Hamas you won’t be able to beat it,” said Aviad.

The tunnels also contain a fixed-line phone system that Hamas used to communicate earlier in the war, along with walkie-talkies, burner SIMs and satellite phones. But...militants have increasingly shifted to using runners to convey verbal or written messages.

The Israeli army has found no systematic solution for finding and destroying Hamas’s tunnels.

Hundreds killed in Gaza as they "stormed" aid truck. IDF opened fire as well after some of the crowd approached them.

Source article
The IDF released details from an initial probe into the incident where over a hundred Gazans waiting for aid trucks in the northern Gaza Strip were killed.

According to the Israeli army, 30 aid trucks entered Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing early in the morning and proceeded northward. Upon reaching the junction in Gaza City, the trucks were stormed by residents, resulting in dozens being killed in the crush. The trucks continued northward, and upon reaching the Rimal neighborhood, reports emerged of armed individuals shooting at the trucks and looting them

At that point, according to the Israeli army, some of the crowd began to approach an IDF unit in the area, prompting soldiers to fire warning shots into the air from a distance of tens of meters before eventually aiming at the legs of those who continued to advance towards them.

This is the third time armed civilians have engaged and killed terrorists in Israel.

Shooter used a rifle and was member of the Palestinian Authority preventative security force.

The same gas station was site of June terrorist attack that killed four people.  Link to story on June attack.

Article in Times of Israel.
Two Israelis were killed when a Palestinian terrorist opened fire at a gas station in the West Bank on Thursday afternoon, the military and medics said.

The attack, the second deadly shooting at the spot outside the settlement of Eli since June, comes as security tensions around the West Bank have risen ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, even as the military remains focused on fighting in Gaza and escalating skirmishes on the northern border.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service said two men, one in his 20s and the other 57, were found shot dead at the gas station shortly after 5 p.m.

One victim was shot inside his car, while the second was found lying on the road nearby, medics said.

MDA did not report any additional victims.

The Israel Defense Forces said one terrorist involved in the deadly shooting attack was shot dead at the scene. The owner of a nearby hummus restaurant told media he had shot and killed the terrorist.

Images showed that the terrorist was armed with an assault rifle. Reports in Hebrew-language media said the assailant was a senior officer in the Palestinian Authority’s preventative security force.

There was no confirmation of the gunman’s identity.

Suspected infiltration alarms sounded in Eli following the terror attack, amid fears of additional gunmen in the area. Residents were ordered to remain in their homes for about half an hour before an all-clear was given.

The attack took place at the same location as a deadly terror assault in June in which four Israelis were killed.

The victims of Thursday’s attack were not immediately named.

Thousands of Palestinians rushed the trucks after they passed an IDF checkpoint in central Gaza, leading to a stampede in which dozens of Palestinians were wounded and killed, some after being run over by the trucks, according to the probe.
The IDF's initial investigation finds that some of the trucks managed to continue further north, where armed men reportedly opened fire at the convoy near Rimal and looted it.

Dozens of Palestinians who rushed the last truck in the convoy began to move toward an IDF tank and troops stationed at the military's checkpoint, the investigation finds.

An officer stationed in the area ordered to fire warning shots in the air as the Palestinians were within a few dozen meters, as well as gunfire at the legs of those who continued to move toward the troops, the probe says.

The IDF has coordinated several aid deliveries to northern Gaza in recent weeks, although this one was larger than usual, and it will now look to finding a solution to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Analysis | Accidental or not, mass fatalities in Gaza could change the course of the Israel-Hamas war
Since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, a danger has lurked that became a reality on Thursday: an event of accidental mass killing in a confrontation between the Israel Defense Forces and Palestinian civilians, which will affect the continuation of the fighting and reduce the possibilities available to Israel.

This is a Kafr Kana scenario, which in 1996 brought about an earlier than planned conclusion to Operation Grapes of Wrath in southern Lebanon. Ten years later, in another Lebanon war, Hezbollah tried to inflate an incident bearing similar characteristics which even happened in the same village. In that case, a 48-hour cease-fire was arranged, but then the fighting resumed for two more weeks, until a settlement was worked out that brought an end to the war

An Iranian IRGC advisor was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Baniyas --Link to article

A member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards navy serving as a military adviser in Syria was killed in a suspected Israeli strike on Friday, Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported.

Other Iranian media reports said Reza Zarei was killed along with two members of Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group.

The IRGC have scaled back deployment of their senior officers in Syria due to a spate of deadly Israeli strikes and were relying more on allied Shiite militia to preserve their sway there, Reuters reported in February.

Institute for Study of War backgrounder 1 March

Key Takeaways:

Northern Gaza Strip
Palestinian militias defended against Israeli operations in the northern Gaza Strip. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a new, “division-wide” clearing operation in the Zaytoun neighborhood in eastern Gaza City on February 20.  Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) published footage on March 1 of its fighters clashing with Israeli forces in the area.

The IDF Nahal Brigade (162nd Division), which has been operating in Zaytoun, killed a Palestinian cell with mortar fire and small arms during clearing operations.

The Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), a Palestinian militia aligned with Hamas in the war, reported that it fired rockets targeting Israeli military positions in the northern Gaza Strip. The PRC’s attack was in response to the humanitarian aid convoy incident on February 28.

The al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, which is the self-proclaimed military wing of Fatah and aligned with Hamas in the war, reported that its fighters clashed with Israeli forces east of Jabalia refugee camp.

Palestinian Mujahideen Movement fighters similarly fired an unspecified guided munition at an IDF tank.  The Palestinian Mujahideen Movement is a Palestinian faction aligned with Hamas and has expressed close ties with Iran.

The IDF Air Force targeted an area in the northern Gaza Strip from which Palestinian fighters previously fired rockets targeting Israel on February 29.

Southern Gaza Strip
Israeli forces expanded clearing operations to “new areas” east and west of Khan Younis on February 21.  The IDF 7th Brigade (36th Division) raided the homes of senior Hamas officials in western Khan Younis and located a weapons depot.

The IDF Givati Brigade (162nd Division) has been operating in eastern Khan Younis neighborhoods for the past week, approximately two kilometers from the border with Israel.

Palestinian fighters defended against Israeli operations in several sectors of Khan Younis on March 1. The al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades clashed with Israeli forces in al Qarara north of Khan Younis.  The militia also reported that its fighters in the west fired rocket-propelled grenades (RPG) and mortars targeting Israeli forces.

Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar, described high casualties among Palestinian civilians as a means to add international pressure on Israel should the IDF proceed with clearing operations in Rafah.

Sinwar’s comments reflect Hamas’ tendency to view civilian casualties as a tool to pressure Israel. The Wall Street Journal reported on February 29 that senior Hamas officials in Doha met in early February 2023 amid concerns that Hamas’ military wing in the Gaza Strip was taking heavy losses.

Sinwar delivered a message to the leaders claiming that the military wing is doing fine and is ready for an Israeli offensive into Rafah. Sinwar’s comments regarding civilian casualties are reflective of a broader Hamas mindset.

A member of Hamas’ Political Bureau indicated two weeks after the October 7, 2023, attacks that the group was prepared to accept heavy losses for the attack—possibly even including high civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip—in support of Hamas’ effort to destroy the Israeli state.  There are over a million displaced Palestinian civilians currently in Rafah.

Political Negotiations
An unspecified senior Israeli official reported that Israel will not continue ceasefire negotiations until Hamas provides information on the status of the hostages it holds in the Gaza Strip.

The official said that Qatari and Egyptian mediators failed to provide details from Hamas on the status of hostages.

Israel also wants Hamas to offer a ”serious response” on the number of Palestinian prisoners Israel would release under a deal.  Israel previously refused to further engage in hostage talks because Hamas demanded that Israel release thousands of Palestinian prisoners as part of the deal.

Israel has reportedly agreed since then to a framework that would release up to 400 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 40 Israeli hostages and a six-week truce

Hamas and Fatah agreed to continue meeting with each other after attending talks in Moscow.  Several Palestinian factions met in Moscow on February 29 to discuss the formation of a new Palestinian government.

West Bank
Israeli forces have clashed with Palestinian fighters in 13 locations across the West Bank.  Local PIJ battalions claimed to have clashed with Israeli forces seven times around Jaba and Jenin.

The al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades (Fatah) clashed with Israeli forces around Hebron, Jenin, and Tulkarm.

Southern Lebanon and Golan Heights
Iranian-backed militias, including Lebanese Hezbollah, have conducted at least seven attacks from southern Lebanon into northern Israel.

The IDF is continuing to increase its combat readiness around northern Israel. Former IDF spokesperson Avi Benayahu stated that Israeli forces are conducting training meant to simulate combat against Hezbollah around the Israel-Lebanon border.

Syria
Israel was likely responsible for an airstrike that killed an Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Navy officer in Baniyas, Syria.

Syrian media reported that the officer, Colonel Reza Zarei, had connections to Hamas.  Syrian media also reported that the airstrike killed three other individuals, two of whom were members of Lebanese Hezbollah.

Iranian state media reported that Zarei was assigned to the IRGC’s 1st Naval District, which is responsible for the Strait of Hormuz.

It is unclear what Zarei was doing in Syria, although his deployment to Syria reflects the greater role that the IRGC services other than the Quds Force have assumed in Iran’s regional activities in recent years.

The IRGC deployed its regular ground units, for instance, to fight in the Syrian civil war on behalf of Bashar al Assad.  The IRGC Navy and Aerospace Force have similarly increased their operations in Syria in recent years.

The Quds Force remains the lead Iranian entity for managing and supporting the so-called “Axis of Resistance” and conducting extraterritorial operations. But the Quds Force also appears to increasingly share part of that mission with other elements of the Iranian security apparatus.

Yemen
US CENTCOM intercepted a drone over the Red Sea and conducted two preemptive strikes targeting six mobile, anti-ship cruise missiles in Houthi-controlled Yemen on February 29.

CENTCOM reported that the drone and cruise missiles presented imminent threats to merchant and US naval vessels in the region.

Iran
Iran held separate elections for Parliament and the Assembly of Experts. These elections will likely preserve and possibly even reinforce hardliner influence in the Iranian regime.

Voter turnout appeared to hit a record low, likely reflecting the population’s growing disillusionment with the regime. This year’s Assembly of Experts election is uniquely significant, as it could very well oversee the succession of Iran’s next supreme leader.

Haaretz:  Israel Claims Responsibility for Killing Three Iran-linked Hezbollah Members in Lebanon

The Israeli army said it had 'struck a vehicle in southern Lebanon, in which a number of terrorists who launched rockets into Israeli territory were driving.' It said the militants operated under the Iran-affiliated Imam Hossein Division of Hezbollah.

Another four Hezbollah members were killed in a strike on a house in the town of Ramia overnight, said a Lebanese security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to journalists.

The Lebanese militant group has been trading fire with Israeli forces along the Lebanon-Israel border near-daily since the beginning of Israel's war against Hamas, a Hezbollah ally, in Gaza. The fighting has killed more than 200 Hezbollah fighters and at least 37 civilian in Lebanon and at least nine soldiers and nine civilians in Israel.

An Israeli drone strike killed three Hezbollah members in southern Lebanon on Saturday morning, the IDF said in a statement.

According to the statement, Israeli air force fighter jets have also struck Hezbollah targets in the southern Lebanon districts of A-Lebuna and Blida.

Another four Hezbollah members were killed in a strike on a house in the town of Ramia overnight, said a Lebanese security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to journalists.

The state-run National News Agency said the latest strike on Saturday hit a car in the Naqoura area along Lebanon's southern coast.

The Israeli military said in a statement that it had "struck a vehicle in southern Lebanon, in which a number of terrorists who launched rockets into Israeli territory were driving." It said the militants operated under the Imam Hossein Division, which is affiliated with Iran and operates under Hezbollah.

Hezbollah announced the deaths of seven of its fighters Saturday, but as usual did not specify when and where they were killed.

Hezbollah has said it will not halt its fire until there is a cease-fire in Gaza but would observe a truce if one is reached.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has vowed to step up attacks on Hezbollah even if a cease-fire is reached with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, until the Lebanese militant group withdraws from the border area.
