Then Elon can send a rescue vehicle on a falcon heavy to repair it.

Elon should be flying it.

Im not a negative person.  And I'm really excited about the possibilities of the telescope.  I have zero faith it will work.

I know that feel.

At least there's plenty of other instruments up there.

NASA's New X-Ray Telescope Is A Revolution in Astronomy and Launch Profiles

And for the time being, we still have Hubble. If Webb fails then they are probably going to send up a Dragon capsule to do repairs on Hubble. Once Starship is flying we will probably see a new generation of space telescopes being built.

We would feel a great disturbance in the force, as if millions of geek voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

That would seriously suck.

To be fair, I’d rather they be ridiculously overcautious with every step on the ground (as it seems they’re doing) to be absolutely certain that it’s going to work once they get it up beyond the moon where they won’t be able to fix anything that doesn’t work. If they have to delay it a few more weeks to be damn certain it’s going to function properly, so be it

I don't have zero faith, but I will be mildly surprised if it works.  But, I thought the same thing about the Mars "Sky Crane".

I like the odds for it leaving the atmosphere, but...

60% chance of problems reaching L2

99% chance technical issues with the telescope

they'll get if functional but with only 60% advertised capacity

If it works, it could detect evidence of alien life on distant planets. That’s worth 10 trillion, let alone 10 billion.
