There was a lot going on leading up to this:
Fresh court battle could expose more details in Acosta's controversial Epstein plea deal Backstory. Acosta, who works for Trump's admin now, was a DOJ AUSA (actually the head guy in his district in Florida) who cut the deal with Epstain years ago. One of Epstein's victims is and has been suing Epstein civil for damages. Lots of people piled on including the Miami Herald and Mike Cernovich which of course brings up controversy since he's been bashed for pushing the pizzagate story. Lots of people came in from both sides supporting unsealing of documents and of course supporting continued secrecy. https://www.thedailybeast.com/feds-are-asking-jeffrey-epsteins-victims-about-sex-trafficking-crimes - lefty page, not hotlinked. Interestingly in June stories leaked that the DOJ was interviewing victims in Epstein's case looking for a reason to arrest him based on exactly what he was arrested on. It appears some of the victim's in the civil cases were purposefully targeting Acosta who again now works in the Trump Admin. It's interesting the approach they are taking in that they want Acosta gone more than anyhting else...which I don't disagree if he was handing out favorable punishment to protect the political class. But by then the panel of Judges of Cabranes, Pooler and Droney had made it pretty clear they will be remanding the case and the 167 documents back to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The only question seems to be whether Judge Sweet, who initially agreed to seal them, will get the case on remand or if another judge will. |
