I do have basically the same design in a Camillus I bought used. The more modern style knives like Esee do have more stout full length grip, but if you aren't going to baton one does it matter?
View Quote

Yes and no.

Yes if you want to be cool.

No as they are hidden tangs and are technically a full tang as it is the full length it's just narrower to fit under the handle material.

Now there are issues with the shoulders where it's steps upto the blade at the guard and the newer style knives are often thicker and have a more optimal heat treat.

Where did you find one with the USCG marking? The one I was issued with my flight gear was AF marked as I recall, 1978 or so. I lost it somewhere along the line as I used a Gerber Mk2 as my fight suit knife for my time on H3’s in AK.

The Ontario SP1 is a great modern version of the KaBar. It is made from thicker blade stock, has a larger tang, and a more stabby point. I think that it is the best value out there for a fixed blade fighting knife.

Technically not a Kabar as it was made by Camillus. Name on the sheath is that of a WWII marine who earned two Purple hearts in the pacific.

exactly,  kabar became a slang, but camillus is the original, all others were made using camillus blueprints due to war demand. Camillus is my favorite.

That is true maybe worth the wait and price if you got one that went to space.

Aside from that...

I have the USCG Ka-Bar too. I bought it for my dad but he declined it in favor of the USAF Survival knife he had been issued when he went to some survival at sea course and carried ever since.

I now own that knife too.

The one I got for my dad came off of Amazon years ago. I guess the Ka-Bar people no longer produce the USCG model.

Is it bad that I have 18 usmc combat  knives from ww2 to present. , plus 3 new camillus blade blanks, 12 pilot survival knives 2 are the 6 inch first design,  giving me over 70 quality US made sheath knives,  about 20 pocket knives, and a box of mixed US made  camillus, marbles, and western knife blanks.

The blood grove is actually a measurement device for the proper amount of Tang powder to mix per cup of water. Only to be used while on earth for obvious reasons.

They're fighting knives not do it all knives. Meaning they weren't meant for all manner of fieldcraft jist stabbing and slashing. I say that fully understanding these days we expect more from our knives.

Hell no, that's not bad, that's America!

I've always had a thing for prewar and war era knives. I've picked up several USMC fighting/USN Mk II knives. Blade marked, guard marked, screw pommel, pinned pommel, Camillus, Ka-Bar, Robeson, PAL. Each is different and I like them all. My favorites are the RH 37 for some reason.
