Guess I'm almost alone here, but I like it. In fact I think it's pretty awesome. Just my take, but...the artist captured an enigmatic expression that highlights his age and character without making him look worn, or weak. I'm almost sure that was intentional, the palace insiders are reporting his cancer is very serious, and they really don't think he'll survive it. I'd bet money that explains the butterfly as well, he finally transitioned into the role he prepared for his entire life, but he's fragile, and his time in the sun will be short.
The sea of red is unusual, but the Welsh Guards tunic is red and I think he just wanted it blended into the larger portrait. It's a very vivid red, and would be distracting against something more conventional. |
