I have the range and furnace on LP. I'm thinking about an LP clothes dryer.

What I want is to free up as much space in the breaker box as possible to make room for an EV charger and a 60 gal compressor.

The clothes dryer seems like a better choice than the water heater, since it's only used occasionally.

Thoughts?

Anyone have a gas dryer?

Would I be better off upgrading the electric panel to accommodate the EV charger and compressor?

I have a propane dryer, it's a Maytag, nothing terribly expensive but it does the job it's intended to. What's your question?

ETA  It uses a normal 110 outlet for the timer, and motor for the drum so it's not 100% propane.

No room for mini breakers?

I had them for decades in previous houses.  I much prefer them over electric.  Back to an electric in the current home.  Thankfully, electricity is cheap in Utah.

We bought one for LP about a decade ago.  It was a nat gas one that we converted.  Nothing like the wife’s brand new dryer all torn to pieces in the hall before she’s ever used it.   When we moved to a nat gas house, I said just leave it for the new owner and I’ll buy a new one.

Had one in Vegas. Worked as it should have:

it's still electric op.

My last two have been LPG (converted).  No complaints.

I would just put a bigger breaker box  in if mini breakers wouldn't fit.

We have a natural gas clothes dryer.  Have had for over 30 years.

They are great (dry the clothes fast) and seem to break less frequently than electric models.

That's a good point on the minis. I'll look into that.

I'm just trying to repurpose some of the 220v runs.

The LP range has been fantastic, we'll never go back to electric on that.

Might be worth mentioning that we have a 500 gallon tank for the furnace and a 120 (420lb) gallon for the range.

How much gas do you think the dryer uses a year? Our tank for the range has been refilled once in 3 or 4 years, the range is used daily.

It will use a lot more than your range.
I run LP furnace and range, Electric dryer. Check your rates, made sense to me to not have to fill LP in the early spring, instead of summer fill.

I have had the same natural gas dryer for 40 years. I don't have the figures but believe it's cheaper than electric. One set of drum rollers, a few sensors, and two motors down through the years. I wish more stuff lasted like it has.
Just a suggestion. Try to have a straight shot right through the wall with the exhaust. Can't say enough about how that thing needs to breathe.

AFAIK, all the gas appliances now come set up for NG, even the ones sold for off-grid markets.    We bought a gas dryer and I had to take the whole damn thing apart to change the jetting.

I have one that was converted from natural gas. I love my gas range and dryer. I wouldn't trade.

Do you have 100 amp or 200 amp service now? If 100 amp, just bite the bullet and upgrade the service. If 200amp, consider getting a sub panel put in.

It's never a good sign if you're so full you're considering changing out appliances or using mini breakers to add something else.

I bought a used natural gas dryer off Facebook for a $100. An LG, (I know) switched the natural gas nozzle to propane and while I had it apart I replaced the urethane rollers and drum belt.  ($50 from Amazon)

Best dryer I've ever had and saves a ton of money over my old electric.

We have installed hundreds of EV chargers. I don't want to get into the details here, but you can PM me if you want some technical advice.
Lowering the demand load on your breaker panel to free up capacity for a charger is always a good idea.

Look into that option.  There may be a component that allow you to split off the dryer connection by the dryer then run wiring to the charger.  You may be able to also feed the compressor but you risk tripping the breaker if you or anyone tried to run two or more at the same time so possibly add in a switch if such a device exists or convert the water heater to propane if you want dedicated circuits.

If you charge an EV in the garage have multiple smoke/fire alarms in the garage that will sound in your bedroom along with preplanned and exercised fire evacaution drills.
