Laser/Radar jammer vs just paying the ticket (Page 1 of 3)

So I recently got a ticket for going slightly over the speed limit. Since I pulled over, the officer kindly wrote me up for 99 in a 75, thus avoiding the whole messy situation of having me take a ride with him back to the police station. (dude kept thanking me for pulling over  )Anyway, I started think that maybe I should get a laser jammer... but then I looked at the prices for those things. The ticket was $135, had no effect on my license, and didn't cause my insurance to go up. A laser jammer is anywhere from $2-3K for the good ones. Even if I got a ticket once a year, it would take me 20 years to justify the price of a jammer, so why would I actually buy this instead of just paying the ticket every few years?  |

Jammer? No. But i have kept detectors in my vehicles since the mid 90's. They work great if you know how to interpret the readings. Some cops keep their guns powered off until they want to blast you, and at that point it really doesn't matter. Same with laser. That being said, most cops done use laser and keep their radar guns on all the time......i can pick them up miles down the road if the terrain allows. Totally worth it. |

You should go out and get another ticket, but make sure they don't write it down to under 100mph. Go to the police station, etc. After that's cleared up a little (don't wait too long).....go out and get another 100mph ticket. Repeat this until you don't have a drivers license, then you don't have to buy a jammer, you save money on tickets and gas. You're welcome. |

over 100 I haven't done that in well over a decade and it was driving straight roads of the empty desert flats of NV/UT Doesn't matter if you have a detector or not. Always follow the 3 rules of speeding: 1. NEVER drive faster than it is safe. 2. NEVER drive faster than you are willing to accept consequences of the resulting ticket. 3. NEVER be a dick. |

No matter how fast I drive when I can go fast there are always slow parts on a trip that pushes my average speed on a long trip down to about 55-60 MPH. YMMV. |

However, there are two crucial legal traps to keep in mind: The "Double Fine" Rule: If you are pulled over and caught speeding in Louisiana, your speeding ticket fines are automatically doubled if a radar detector or similar device is present in your vehicle. Laser vs. Police Officer: Under Louisiana Revised Statute § 14:37.3, it is a crime to intentionally aim a laser beam at a police officer. While intended for laser pointers, a poorly timed or improperly configured jammer that draws an officer's attention could theoretically expose you to a fine of up to $500 and up to 6 months in jail. Yeah, the manner in in which you did it is one of the considerations I take into account, before I decide to call you a dick over it. On a highway with more than light or non-existent traffic, I'd say you're a dick. When you basically have the road to yourself? I really DGAF. Sounds like you're pretty solidly in the "non-dick" category. As for the detectors/jammers, I like to drive on the faster side and find that just using common sense keeps me from getting tickets most of the time. I've not had enough tickets in the last 20 years to offset the price if a good detector. |

Years ago one of the car magazines did a laser jammer test. One thing they found was that driving during the day with your high beams on will cut the effective laser range by nearly half. If you are really flying, they found that slamming on your brakes is also very effective because the radar cannot lock in on a speed that is fluctuating so rapidly. In Florida it seems that on the highway and there’s no traffic, the average speed is approaching 90. I don’t do over 99 anymore. Florida has come down very hard on speeders doing 100 and up. Since that law was enacted, I believe there’s been over 4000 arrests. And THAT IS NOT my cup of tea. I’ll keep my racing to Sebring. |

For some cars, doing 100, is the same as 50 in a shitbox. Better tires, braking, handling, power, etc. |

The people speeding to get around one "slow" car get 50 yards ahead and then are stuck behind another slow car. |

Almost as if excess speed reduces reaction time... but I'm sure it has absolutely zero impact on your ability to avoid potential hazards... none at all. |
