It's not worth it, and thats just thinking about potential obstacles in the roadway ( such as deer ) you will have even less time to brake for and not even taking into consideration the multiple violations you are opening yourself up to. If you are driving at night at those speeds also I am going to guess that you probably are not 100% rested either. On interstates ? I'll keep up with the flow of traffic. If the speed limit is 65 and people in my lane are doing 75-85 I will do 75-85. If I am the only car on the roadway ? I will do 5-8 mph over that 65 mph limit so I don't get a ticket. That cop was being kind. Recognize and embrace that. I also see that your original join date was 2006, so I am going to guess you are in your late 40's/50's. Not once have I hit a deer, gator, moose, elephant, or anything bigger than a cat that decided to suicide itself by literally running under my car as I drove past. To be fair, I did have an at fault accident 30 some odd years ago, but I changed my driving behavior so that circumstance is unlikely to happen again. However, my point with this post was not to discuss my miscreant ways, but rather to question the necessity of running ECM vs just taking your lumps and paying the fine. |

It doesn't have to be either/or. ECM are just another tool. My opinion is that a detector can help spot enforcement efforts and lower (not eliminate) the chances of getting a ticket, and over the long term that pays for the detector. One must still be observant and vigilant, which to me are part of defensive driving anyway so not really a burden, but if you're driving at "ticket me now!" speeds I think it pays to try to be hyper-vigilant. You cannot rely 100% on a detector. Drive while watching for speed enforcement like you don't have one. I do not often drive or ride fast enough to where if a cop saw me, they would pull me over, but the detector tells me of nearby enforcement efforts and this makes me check my speed. Often, I am very close to the limit, even sometimes below, so am not necessarily at risk of a citation, but I still want to know if surveillance tools are being used on me for a victimless crime. |

Laser is actually easier to deal with than radar if you spend the $$. I can't afford to, so I drive slower. |

Some places allow you to take a driver safety class in return for downgrading the ticket. Over the years I have found just slowing down is the best way to avoid tickets but then again I am retired and never in a hurry anymore. |

From a lot of the replies I'm guess we are finding out who all the left lane camping, speed limit or under, everyone else is going to kill the world members are![]() Honestly I haven't even had a radar detector in over 15yrs. I've gotten some pretty serious tickets in the past but nothing in a long time. I usually just drive based on the area and situation. Usually keep it in the 10ish over area, but based on roads and traffic flow sometimes triple digits are warranted. |

I worked for a guy who grew up with the then police chief, so I used to hear various things. It has been so long that I can't remember the numbers anymore, so I'll make up the numbers but they will illustrate a point. They used to have 20 collisions between police cars and deer a year, which led to considerable expense. They put deer whistles on all of the police cars to see if it would help, and annual deer collisions went down to like 2. Again, I cannot recall the actual numbers, but it was a huge drop. |

I got pulled over a few years ago for passing a cop on a 2 lane (in each direction) road. He had just pulled out of a side road so I saw him in plenty of time and set my cruise to right at or maybe 1-2over. He wasn't even up to the speed limit when I passed. He asked why I was going so fast and felt the need to pass him and I told him cause he wasn't even doing the speed limit You could tell he just wanted something to do. He didn't ticket me but definitely one of those WTF moments.

I like my Uniden and while it greatly reduces the chance of a ticket it's not zero. Lidar is the big threat but takes more effort for the LEOs to run. Not surprisingly enforcement seems to coincide with good weather as the cops don't want to be out in 100 degree heat any more than anyone else though this is a personal observation. The plain fact is there's really no upside to LE interaction for the average citizen and a detector along with not driving completely insane or drunk go a long way to avoiding that. |
