I'll start. THE BEAST aka The Beast of War (1988). It takes place during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. This movie motivated me to want to be a tanker in the US Army but the MOS wasn't available so I went commo instead. The Beast is free to watch on Youtube. This was made by a local MN filmmaker in Minnesota. If the young James Cromwell looks like him, it's because it's his son. The Battle of Algiers The Battle of Algiers -with English subtitles (TRV edit) made with approval of the Algerian Govt (aka the FLN guerillas who won their independence). Film admits to a grudging respect for Fr. para's but does a great job in illustrating complexities of a modern insurgency against a western democracy/republic. When my MiTT team was training the Iraqi Army we showed this movie to the Iraqi officers who loved it. it's in arabic but with english subtitles. Great discussion followed about 'the people' as key terrain. We were in the middle of the Sunni triangle at the time. |

Speaking of Danish movies (since three different ones have already been mentioned), "The Bombardment" (2021) is pretty good. It's also sometimes called "The Shadow in my Eye". It's about the British Operation Carthage - which was the bombing of the Gestapo headquarters in occupied Copenhagen, intended to help the Danish resistance ... but the mission went terribly wrong. It's not a "war movie" with lots of combat and action, but I think it's a very good movie about an interesting (and not well-known) bombing raid in WW2.
