Have an 18" 30-30 (marlin) that is my traveling companion. Short enough but powerful enough and ,at least in the west, still politically and socially acceptable. Wears ghost ring sights that will stay but want to add an optic that won't hinder me at short range but will help me at 100yds. Thoughts? Experiences ? Suggestions? Pictures? |

This is relevant to my interests. I have a 30-30 and 45-70 I'd like to add optics to. Ideally something small and light enough to not screw up the weight and balance of the guns. I'm thinking something like a RMR, or maybe an SRO? I'd also like something to let me stretch the 45-70's legs, but that strays into the realm of large, heavy optics |

I like a small variable scope (1-6x30 SFP) on my .308 Win BLR-81. Works as a red dot and also helps with the longer shots. Use it mainly for elk. It's not the lightest possible, but the scope sits comfortably on the rifle's center of gravity and the gun rises to the cheek instinctively. blr_scoped by hyvien puolella

This is one guys opinion. If you want to be unhindered in close and also want the capability to stretch the guns legs then that says magnified optic vs. some sort of RDS. There are a couple of ways to go here. One route is the LVPO with an illuminated reticle and the other is the Scout Scope arrangement. I have and use both. On leverguns I have Scout setups on: Savage 99 in 308 Marlin 45/70 Marlin 30/30 All are Luepold 2.75 heavy duplex with throw lever rings. My leverguns with LVPO’s: Savage 99 in 308 Vortex 1-8 Marlin 30/30 Vortex 1-8 Savage 99 358 Win 2-7 non illuminated. It will likely get changed out this year. For me both systems are equally fast. The scopes do as a small bit of weight but the benefits far outweiyany weight penalty. |
