For Facebook/meta's plan here to work they needed much more than the dorks to invest in these things. Their goal was to have this be the new "must have" accessory and social platform, much like everyone owning a smart phone these days.

While the VR hardware is pretty good for what it is, the metaverse project failed to attract anyone. The nerds didn't want a corporate branded version of VR chat that's worse in almost every way, and grandma didn't want to wear a headset to see if her grandchildren logged into Facebook to say hi that month.

Yup. If you were stupid enough to piss away good money on this ridiculous, first world idiocy, then it is a source of great amusement for me. Throw a couple quarters into a classic arcade video game somewhere and be far ahead.

That was another part I didn't get. It's digital. You won't run out lol. But it's something I was already experienced with in certain ways already. I always bitched at from folks that were terrible making powerpoints. NASA was the worst about this. They'd put like 15 paragraphs in 6 font on per slide. I'm like its fucking digital you're not getting penalized per slide lol. Make another slide and break up the fucking content FFS.

I picked up a headset to try out the technology.

It had me choose an avatar as part of the setup process. When I couldn’t find a body type the even remotely resembled me, I wondered how long it would last. Then there are the look options… He needed to realize that his market is no longer just college aged introverts.

My opinion is that Augmented Reality is the future.  Overlaying information over the real world like a shop manual over your engine compartment, wait times over restaurants, etc.  The line of scrimmage and 10yd markers they added to football 15 years ago is only the beginning.

A metaverse is going to happen eventually.  The tech just isn't there to make it more useful than hinderance at this point.

He had one decent idea, Facebook, which he kinda stole. Based on that single success he thought he was some kind of tech genius and was willing to waste billions on an outdated graphical interface.

I've been working with some Japanese companies developing their own metaverse. During covid when everyone was on lockdown the investors bought into the story that people will be able to enjoy shopping, travel, and personal interaction using a metaverse.

Now we are not locked down it's become obvious that the masses are not going to take to it unless it's very cheap (headsets) and very high graphics quality like GTA graphics level. On top of that, the computing power needed is intense, only the latest iPhone/iPad will run it, and as most younger people don't have a PC now, they can only experience it on an iPhone or iPad so the experience is nothing like what was touted when these projects started. With the crypto industry in the dumps, blockchain payment systems are losing investors, and there is a lot of uncertainty as to why someone would want to purchase fashion items or cosmetics in a metaverse compared to a website or in person.

The really big problem is policing it. In every single live test that I have seen with these companies, there is sexual abuse, someone loads a gimp avatar or a naked avatar and they go to town, or they will be banging each other in every possible manner. If there is some way to fuck with people and have fun doing it it's going to happen, so the cost of policing is astronomical.

The benefits it provides to people with disabilities are interesting, but wanting to spend your life in a virtual world is not healthy, and speaking to your boss with a dog or drag queen avatar just fucking sucks.

The metaverse sounds great when you are selling it to people also interested in making money off of it. The biggest hurdle isn’t going to be the technology, it’s getting the consumers to actually get on board with using it. Certainly, better graphics and implementations will help but at the end of the day fancy graphics alone isn’t going to get more than gamers to care.
