I had thought to suggest the same. The gloss is taking away from the expressions and making the texture of the face material stand out more.

The black acrylic she was using has a bit more shine than some of the other acrylics we use.  I'll see about finding some matte clear.

I'm still alive, and the eyes are getting slightly adjusted.  She added another set of expressive lines, and also enlarged the other set.  She squinted one eye a bit more to show more difference.

We still need to add the matte finish.

Panther Space Shuttle patch got added to his NASA jacket.  Pretty cool.

Update 10/17

Lots of discussion and, well, arguing about if Marvin is done or not.  Several students who have not been involved with Marvin are not happy with how he looks.  They want Marvin to hit the gym a bit.

First, Marvin needed to get a bit of Mars on his shoes.

We did get him in the rocket today.  Some students think he is just too thin.  I will let them have their shot at making him a bit more buff on Monday.  Students who've worked on him so far are fine with the new team coming in to do a few alterations.

We are done with this shelf until we have the drilling rig.

Pressure hatches and more details going on to some of the buildings on Mars.

The passenger cabin on Starship is looking more finished.

We have tomorrow off, so no more updates till Monday.

I will go so far as to say "Get LOTS of matte clear".  The rocket, his helmet, his face, all would look better and more even.   If you can only find gloss, spray an even coat of that, let it dry overnight, then quickly mist it again (opposite of what you do for neat and smooth paint).  Stand back a ways and sort of throw the droplets in the general direction of the surface so they dry slightly on the trip.  Matte is easier, and you can do the same trick to make matte into Super matte finish.

The other thing I'd mention, but fear retribution for, is the little ball on the nose, maybe go to ping pong ball size?  Just how it is is good, I like the smaller ones on tail, but the rocket nose isn't cartoon enough (unless that was what you were going for).  Little spike and ping pong ball or something.

Good suggestions.  The spire and ball got broken off already, and will be reattached later, but I like the idea of a larger ball.  We can probably do that.

That was their plan, I think.  Add material over top of chest/torso, puff up a bit.

Marvin has a few different outfits.. I nearly commented on the gold trim until I looked into it.

I like the all green helmet and kilt, no gold trim, with the red suit and shoes. Sometimes his helmet and kilt are gold with a green suit and shoes. Lots of variations.

We had a huge discussion about that.

Even though it isnt the original outfit, the students though we should go with this combo.  There were of course dissenters.

They have been playing around with "soft mounts".

There is a subculture that seems to like having these, and even wearing these(mostly foxes), attached to coats.  There is wire in the legs, but poseable, and just pillow stuffing in the torso.  The head has a traditional rug mount hard foam head.  The eyes are also traditional taxidermy eyes.

They have found that there is a very lively market online for these and they are getting around $350-400 for a coyote, more for foxes.

This had been an important source of income for both of them.

Today one of my students finished a coyote and was letting other students pose with it.  It was a huge hit. In this photo it isn't quite done.  The detail work in the yes and nose has not been done yet.  Epoxy, paint, and gloss clearcoat was added later today.

If I ever end up getting a wolf near my cabin, I might have to do this and attach it to my M65 field jacket.

Maybe make "real" eyelashes/brows? Thinking something like trimmed and shaped deer belly hair.

Finally caught up, things are looking great.

It was amazing how popular this was with students today.  Even kids who normally might "ewww" at traditional mounts wanted to hold this like a baby and walk around with it.

If they were to do a squirrel I'd ptobably buy it.

And glad the boy who was in the wreck is doing well.

If you have a water tank somewhere in the Mars colony you should put a Pur & Kleen Water Company logo on it.

Keep in mind the air pressure on Mars is pretty close to zero - even though it gets up to 72 degrees F in the summer on the equator, even w/ an oxygen mask on you couldn't stand outside w/o a pressure suit on.

That means unless there is a lower pressure inside the habitats (likely), sea level Earth atmospheric pressure is 14.7 pounds per square inch.  That means the pressure on closed doors is rather tremendous - tons of force.

It's likely b/c of that fact, habitats on Mars would run a partial pressure atmosphere w/ a higher concentration of oxygen, much like the Apollo program did - that still leaves a tremendous amount of pressure on flat surfaces.
