If you can only find gloss, spray an even coat of that, let it dry overnight, then quickly mist it again (opposite of what you do for neat and smooth paint). Stand back a ways and sort of throw the droplets in the general direction of the surface so they dry slightly on the trip. Matte is easier, and you can do the same trick to make matte into Super matte finish. The other thing I'd mention, but fear retribution for, is the little ball on the nose, maybe go to ping pong ball size? Just how it is is good, I like the smaller ones on tail, but the rocket nose isn't cartoon enough (unless that was what you were going for). Little spike and ping pong ball or something. For Marvin, his waist is correct, seems he has more of a Roman-Greco Build (Grosse Pointe Blank callback).
Upper body shoulders and pecs, and legs to look like a drum stick. Lean and decent, but not bulging muscles. I think its the harsh angle transition from skinny chest/body to arms and legs that looks odd, curving them in would work but need more fabric. |

Marvin has a few different outfits.. I nearly commented on the gold trim until I looked into it.
Attached File I like the all green helmet and kilt, no gold trim, with the red suit and shoes. Sometimes his helmet and kilt are gold with a green suit and shoes. Lots of variations. Loving the thread Guns. |

For some reason, coming back from a 3 day weekend, I've got a little anxiety.....just getting everything moving again.
It's nice to have students show up early and already working on the CAD design for 3D printing of our Raptor engines. |

Do they know they can partially release trigger (or turn knob on the back clockwise to reduce max travel/needle opening) to get less and less paint? I know this is against my earlier admonishment, but when doing a fade like that, it's OK to move the gun a bit further from the surface at the tail end where you need just the lightest mist to make it an invisible transition. Maybe 20" max and when the pant is barely coming out, a smooth release and pullback. Fading is one of the harder things to do, so it's very awesome looking for just starting out! |

Pivoting wrist at the end so you're at a <45° angle to surface instead of pependicular mists it out nicely at low pressure, angle into the color you're fading, say white to blue, with white paint, angle fan toward blue a little bit at end of pass, shown in video. That stops hard lines, another option is to turn the fan off and use the cone, but that will leave blotches of heavier color easier. Best to do too little several times than way too much just once. Small like from one LED feeding a fiber optic bundle to make miniature light strips visible inside, again, no clue how visible this will be in the final display, which changes a lot on how much time to put into making it perfectly smooth. The Marv's Barley stickers, do you have a sacrificial one? Depends how it was printed and what the plastic/clear material is made from. Some might dissolve with clear, I recall a situation with something like a surfboard where I suggested that and it melted everything. Start by just misting it and letting it dry a bit at a time, then once fully covered, give it a full coat after a day or two to cure so the solvent doesn't hurt the image. Only other thing I can think of is sanding off the bumps on some of the re-purposed bottles so it's not really obvious where they came from. That, or add more detail stuff on top to obscure or blend in. It's looking awesome. Hopefully Elon will look at this and decide on a final design. |

The rest is coming along nicely. I'm glad you've discovered the wonders of matte clear for hiding or showing things. I love clear coat. It's a wonderful even things out covering to make things look continuous, instead of a bunch of things put next to each other. The fades on the wall look good. Only one area, brown above Marv's Barley. If you'll be up there anyway, maybe a bit more in the brown on upper left side, but the rest is good. It's passable as is, but for a picky person, there's brown and a band of mist without a much of tapered fade. Although it is NOT easy to do perfectly. Sometimes fixing it means you have start again with the other color working backwards, which kind of sucks... Takes practice. Did I mention the practice method of using water on brown paper bags? Infinitely re-useable, get good control, paper turns darker brown when the water hits it and lets you see how it's going. Then let it dry and you can do it again on the same paper. Maybe I, uhh, should have mentioned that first. |

That's kinda neat actually. It was amazing how popular this was with students today. Even kids who normally might "ewww" at traditional mounts wanted to hold this like a baby and walk around with it. And glad the boy who was in the wreck is doing well. |

This will be quite tedious, but there were lots of students who thought this was fun. One strand of fishing line was added at a time. https://i.imgur.com/wzlKNPo.jpg We've got a long ways to go....... https://i.imgur.com/VoQF4Kh.jpg We've added more details and textures to our Mars colony buildings. Soon paint and logos. Maybe some signs later. https://i.imgur.com/v7EXjND.jpg https://i.imgur.com/fPL3rhd.jpg Students also seemed to find painting individual rocks blue, enjoyable. It does look pretty cool. https://i.imgur.com/rBmSZRb.jpg https://i.imgur.com/sAJCetw.jpg https://i.imgur.com/Ay04p2K.jpg View Quote You must be teaching Masochism 101 if they enjoyed adding the 'water', but I agree that it will look cool when finished. Keep in mind the air pressure on Mars is pretty close to zero - even though it gets up to 72 degrees F in the summer on the equator, even w/ an oxygen mask on you couldn't stand outside w/o a pressure suit on.
That means unless there is a lower pressure inside the habitats (likely), sea level Earth atmospheric pressure is 14.7 pounds per square inch. That means the pressure on closed doors is rather tremendous - tons of force. It's likely b/c of that fact, habitats on Mars would run a partial pressure atmosphere w/ a higher concentration of oxygen, much like the Apollo program did - that still leaves a tremendous amount of pressure on flat surfaces. |
