The pervasive attitude in Montana at the moment is that the "rich" land owners need to pay more for everything, because the "Townies" are getting shafted with high rent prices in the towns because of the influx of all the people.

Too many people are coming here and there isn't enough infrastructure or housing as it is.  Those people have more money than the bottom level locals, so they are being squeezed.

Everyone who comes here has all these ideas on how to fix everything and the first thing to do is start taxing everything and pouring that money back into the local city governments.

Well as you can imagine, it's a mess, they can't build roads, homes, streets, sewers, etc fast enough.

Right now there are probably 100 major building projects in Bozeman/Belgrade not to mention probably 500 homes, apt buildings, condos, going up as well.

20,000 more people by 2030.

Our property taxes (For the most part) get locked when an owner turns 65.  Last year, property owners finally got some relief from the criminal property appraisers via a statewide vote. We got a 60% reduction.

A senior from Montana has delivered a viral speech about the sorry state of property taxes in the Treasure State.

"I'm on Social Security, I'm 68-years-old and working just to pay my taxes," says Kurt, in a clip shared on TikTok by Ryan Busse, who is running to be the next governor of Montana.

Kurt claims that over the last couple of years, his annual property taxes have soared from $895 to almost $8,000   an increase of around 790%   which he says is like paying almost "$700 a month rent to the state to live in our own house." The state has an Elderly Homeowner/Renter Tax Credit, and the maximum credit is $1,150.

"There needs to be a moratorium on what we have to pay," he says, adding that he's had to continue working into what should be his retirement golden years to cover his mounting property costs. "I'm stubborn enough [that] I don't want to dig into my bank account to pay them."

Kurt is one of thousands of Montana homeowners suffering sticker shock over recent property tax hikes. He says: "We just can't take this anymore. This was a great place and it still is, but the people that made it great can't afford to live here anymore."

Should be illegal to jack up property taxes post purchase on primary residences.

Replace property taxes altogether with a sales tax assessed at time of purchase and payable over the life of the mortgage.

That’s my point. It’s mentioned quite often here that CA transplants in particular are always bringing their politics with them wherever they return to. This may be the one thing CA got right.

Example. My grandfather bought his place on 5 acres around 1980 for 250k. Shortly after purchased bordering 10 acres for another 60k. It’s currently assessed at 450k and has a $4500 tax bill. My cousin listed it for 4.1 million. That would be a $41,000 annual property tax bill if not for prop 13 which would drive most out.

California doesn't do much right nowadays, but they had Prop. 13 about 40 years ago.  It puts a limit on prop tax increases.

The purpose of the higher property taxes is to force you to have to sell.

If you won't move on your own, they'll take it by force when you fail to pay.

I spoke with a Veterans Affairs rep. about that.

She said it's nearly impossible to get that exemption, unless you're a 100% disabled, non-ambulatory vet.

So, if you're drawing 100%, but you're not completely broken, poor, and destitute, you're not getting the exemption.

They need to do what other states and Michigan have done. Your property gets homesteaded and it can never go up more than 2% a year and it can also go down. I pay the same amount of property taxes on my house that I did in 1996. And I'm still against property taxes, because you never really own your home in property

In CA, they mostly are locked in due to Prop 13.  They can go up, but by a very small amount.  I have owned several properties in CA.  I actully had them go down, during RE downturns.  They actually have a form to fill out that you can use to petition a reduction in prop taxes.  Ask me how I know.

I have 55 acres and two homes, property tax this year is under 3k.

I get a farm tax break and rent the land for corn to cover half the cost.

$11k is around my mortgage payment for my house.

Luckily Mil retirees no longer pay state income taxes.

We have a bill that would knock $150k off the appraised value of our home, really hope it passes since my house is appraised at over $300k.

I built it in 2016 for $188k.

The taxes went up because the value of the house went up. The tax rate didn't change unless new local assessments were passed.

It's still only a fixed 1% plus any local assessments of the sales price whether you bought your house 15 years ago or today and then yearly cap on increases.

So if you take money you were taxed on when you earned it and spend it to improve your property it's now worth more and the gvt taxed you even more so you can have the pleasure of living there. AND if you don't pay tax on property you have paid for with money that has already been taxed the gvt will now take your property without compensating you AT All for the money you have spent to make it more valuable so they charged you more for it to keep. Shit is all wrong. Never mind the fact I homeschool my children so I get to pay property tax for schools I don't use and also get to buy curriculum out of pocket.
