The poor Hurricane was just an unfortunate looking thing IMO. I always thought the Tempest was great looking though. But...the Spit is pure sex.

I always preferred the looks of the Hurricane over the Spitfire myself. The Hurricane has a utilitarian elegance. The Spitfire looks... High maintenance. That said...

Love the looks of these. But I know for a fact that the Napier Sabre engine was one high maintenance contraption.

Actually, the P47 did it.  Not dissing the 51.  It’s just that the 47 had done the bulk of the work before the 51D’s were fielded in numbers. Both airplanes were/are great.

From a Korean war perspective it would of been better to keep the 47 around vs the 51.  For the air to ground.

High maintenance like a supermodel. Fun to look at, but maybe not the one you want to live with forever

ETA
Yeah, Typhoons were cool looking too, but I prefer the bubble canopy models.

Mean looking plane - I stupidly did not realize the Tempest was an updated model of the Typhoon....

Both planes were dominant platform developments for the defense of freedom. The Nazis and the Soviets both threatened the world, just different variants of socialism, both focused on enslavement of the individual under the boot heel of a totalitarian state.

Especially from that angle, it looks like it wants to rip of heads and shit down necks.

It's too bad the British don't build fighter or attack aircraft anymore. Everything has to be some kind of combo effort with other European powers that produce aircraft with no distinct flavor. Say what you will about British fighter aircraft, they were always distinct.

As a better comparison, I always regarded the F-16 and P-51 comparable fighters for their era. Both fast nimble fighters of their day.

Indeed.

As far as Eagle vs. Mustang, the F-15 has achieved 104 aerial victories without a loss.

If you went into combat with a P-51, you came home 70% of the time.

We could have still won the air war in the ETO with only P-47s.

The longer range P-47s would have been available just a little later.

Like the B-17, the P-51 gets all the glory while other aircraft (B-24 Liberator) actually
did the bulk of the heavy lifting.

The P-51 is a great aircraft but the P-47 does almost everything better and is easier to fly
I understand. Last models of the P-47 Thunderbolt were wicked fast.

The F-15 is pure undefeated badass and only recently eclipsed by the F-22 and F-35.

However the P-51 Mustang will always be the most legendary American fighter aircraft.

P47 cost 3x what's the Mustang cost and was expensive to maintain.

People forget the point of the bombing campaign wasn't to destroy industry but to destroy the Luftwaffe through attrition.

They lost a fighter for every bomber we lost, and why a bomber was a crew of 10 and 4x cost of that fighter -  we had an unlimited supply, Germany did not.

That trophy goes to the 8th Air Force and the B17 campaigns doing daylight strategic raids.

The P51 was instrumental in reducing losses though so I’d say we’re both right.

The F4U was every bit as important as the Mustang was in WW2.

Can’t fly a Mustang with only one wing.

The History Channel polluted F-15 threads on the internet forever when they made that video re-creation.

The F-15 has 104 kills in its 50 year operational history. The P-51, P-38, F6F, etc called that a Tuesday afternoon.

The F-15 hasn’t really made a meaningful contribution to history, either.

Ever consider the deterrence factor?  That perhaps the F-15 can be compared to  Mike Tyson at his peak and NONE of the 8th graders are willing to step into the ring with him for a fight to the death?  That doesn't seem meaningful?

P-51 will be the iconic legend.

The F-15 outclassed its contemporaries when it was introduced more thoroughly than the P-51 did.

The F-35 was the pick of the litter for looks in the JSF fly-off.  The Boeing entry looked like a mentally challenged whale shark.

The Navy variant with wider wingspan isn’t totally repulsive.

I always liked the tomcat but the eagle was far and away the best for 30 years.  The mustang was good but maybe equal to the spitfire....or thunderbolt....or Corsair....or fw190....or hellcat.

F15 was air superiority defined.  Mustang is pretty cool but not even as much as the Corsair.

To be fair, the F14 was very focused. It’s job was to claw itself up to high altitude and high speed in a hurry, then shoot down Russian bombers before they could launch hordes of anti ship missiles at the carrier. Most everything about the F14, at least initially, was geared towards that specific mission.

From what I’ve read they added additional capabilities later.

Which world war did the Eagle participate in?  Don't get me wrong, it is probably my favorite fighter of all time but we were not sending thousands of our boys overseas in Eagles like we did with the Stangs.
