I use rat traps too for chipmunks, sometimes the traps disappear, I just figured the trap caught one and a coon or fox found an easy meal

Can you install a metal screen on or under the grill to keep their tails out of it?  I can only imagine the mess it makes with the fan taking them out.

Seems irresponsible to leave one of those large rat traps outside where anything can get to it.

I would probably just look for some wire mesh to put over the AC to keep their tails out of the fan.

How hard it it to just out some machine fabric over the top of the compressor?

I don't think you're going to be able to trap enough chipmunks to solve your problem OP.
Perhaps a raised grill over the top, or a finer screen, to either keep them from contacting the fan or at least from being drawn in.  Perhaps something like this over the top.

drill a hole in the corner of the trap, and make a wire leash to keep them in place

Use a lanyard to tie the trap off to something, I've had to do that when rats would drag them off.

Stake the traps down and try your best to lacate and seal all entry holes with coarse steel wool.
*ETA* Reread, I thought that they were getting into your attic.

I use little Hav A Hart's for chipmunks.

But why fight nature,  put fine mesh on the A/C

Secure the trap so it can't be dragged away.

Last winter, I had a bad mouse problem in my garage.

I had forgot I left a few bags of "Deer Corn" and those fake Corn on the Cobs for squirrels. I'm guessing the word spread and several mouse families moved in and turned my garage into the mouse projects...

I was resetting traps 3 traps, each 3 times a day.  Before I left in the Morning, When I came home for lunch, when I got home from work and sometimes before I went to bed at night.  I used Peanut butter and a small bit of a cracker in the bait area of the trap.  Several times I found the traps several feet from where I had sat them.

A few times I set a game cam up near them to catch the carnage. I saw one Phat mouse get snapped in the trap, then a few seconds later got up and dragged the trap across my work bench then fell off in the floor. When I found the trap it was empty.

And is there a chance some other hungry animal came by, saw a free meal, and took the chipmunk with the trap?

Amazon has compressor covers that bungee on. Mine is 5 years old. It keeps the leaves out.

Perhaps he can shoot them prior to them getting on the AC?

You have a point.  The traps around their necks will probably make noise and slow them down.

I've heard drowning them works well.

The trick is you gotta get real close and stare into their eyes.

I had a damn frog get pulled into mine, it just keep slinging it around making all kids of noise.
Every now and then a body part would come flying off.

I did the same trying to get chipmunks. Pretty sure there is a rabbit dead somewhere with a glue trap on his face......

I would drill a hole somewhere on the trap and pin it down with a spike of some sort.  As for your A/C, get some larger mesh hardware cloth.  It will do the job without causing much of a loss of air flow.

I may or may not of had a neighbor with a ground squirrel problem.   Those pests were digging a tunnel under the neighbor's A/C compressor concrete pad and started under my brick patio.   It's possible that if one would remove the kitchen window screen that a line of fire could be established.  Got a few with Rat traps, I kept them in place by screwing in a eye hook and using a screwdriver into the soil.

I was fighting off those bastards while I was selling that house.  Haven't seen any ground squirrels at new home but rabbits are thick as thieves here.
