There are just 1000% less rugged individuals that can perform those jobs anymore in the US. We are too soft.

The solution is to raise the pay for those jobs. People will tolerate a lot of shit for appropriate compensation.

Are there any historical examples of stuff being built on time and within budget in the past 50 years? One more reason I would never survive as a Flag officer as I could not spout such BS. Whatever happened to your duty to clearly report what’s actually going on? Folks are more concerned about how their next OER looks than doing their duty and preparing for war.

Edit: I just read the “IF” comment. I was thinking he said we were actually on track

It goes deeper. A younger workforce has different needs than an older employee near retirement - stability being a big one.  Why would a young guy with a young family to take care of take a shipyard job knowing full well he will be laid off when the current hull he’s building is complete.  Shipyards don’t retain permanent employees anymore.  They attach people to active build programs.  If the employee is lucky, a new build starts when he finishes the current build.  If not, he gets laid off and has to figure out where his next paycheck comes from.  Groceries, kids, mortgage, car, etc. payments don’t care that he got laid off.

A good, skilled employee that wants stability in life has options.  Many, many industries are desperate for men like him.  He will go to the employer that treats him best.  The shipyards have little chance of hiring him without that promise of stability.

It takes a lot of people to build a ship, and you need a professional workforce to do it well.

I know a younger skilled welder in Maine who worked at the Naval shipyard and he quit to stay home, take welfare and smoke pot all day. That is what happened. He used to do stuff like this.

This is why there won't be war with China. We'll lose half our major equipment in the first 30 days and have to sue for peace being completely unable to replace any of it.

I'm all about the skilled trades, really I am.  But if employers want employees, they need to come up with the money.

Thats all so much communist bullshit.
Salaries constantly go up.  If you have a real degree, you are not starting at 35 or 45K.   More like 80-90K.  Not everyone is valuable, not everyone is special, to burst your Mr Rogers fantansy land bubble.

But so many have no useful degree, or they were slackers with a bidenlike C or D college average in bloated fields like business , accounting, or really useless degrees like political science.  Plus minimal to zero motivation to do much of anything.
So its a falacy that they can earn more money instead of going the skilled rades route.   They would probably fail at that , too.
They can make a few bucks beyond whatever aid or SSI they get from selling some drugs, or stuff they stole.

Prove your worth.   Either through good work where people see what you do, or working hard in college and getting very high grades in tough subjects, plus extracurricular activities and leadership.

They only thing that will fix this horseshit is a big die off, at this point.

1. They have much fewer regulations.

2. They won’t have union / labor / congressional or anything else fucking with getting shit done.

3. Have much more manufacturing capacity / capability / and most importantly lots of factories / ports / yards etc, one gets destroyed there’s plenty still left to build shit.

How many factories did the USA have in the 1960s-1980s doing heavy factory build shit, which were easily able to switch to building war materials, tanks, apcs, missiles, etc?   Whatever those numbers, 80% or more is gone now, shut down and those jobs gone to China. Same for the skilled workers, tool and die, and numbers of skilled people who would be needed to switch to war materials / operate facilities/ build shit, there’s simply not enough.

Extremely short sighted to allow USA manufacturing to move overseas, it partly happened because peace happened and everyone started thinking we could relax and not stress over such, which was bullshit. Government should have imposed / devised various ways to keep that capacity / jobs here.

Because we get into a “ real war” where massive amounts of war equipment is needed quickly, or even massive numbers of troops and we simply can do it.

The days of turning out warships every day, and large capital ships every month ended with WWII.
And the USA probably doesn't have the will/stomach to see on the news how 2 or 3 carriers, and 20-30 of their escorts and support ships were sunk in two weeks or less, and guam and Hawaii bombed to rubble , maybe even nuked, along with most of the aircraft based there.

So whatever we have planned for a retaliatory strike, it better be good enough to cripple the chicoms on the sea, air, and space in 2-3 days.

These are not the (white) male dominated workforce jobs the feminazis want.   They want to go from university graduation right to the corner office without doing all the hard work to get there.

If we were smart.... We'd have schools talk more about the trades. Welders, electricians, and Pipefitters, often make a but more money as Journeymen than College graduates.

I'd believe that. I got a job offer from them about 15 years ago as an engineer, just didn't like the feel of the place. Things like having to use your own PTO for the Christmas shutdown, and you could tell the people who gave tours weren't exactly excited to be there. Went with my other offer, which has worked out (even if they have their own problems).

Plus, you have to live in/around fucking Groton CT. Place seemed like a dump...I had spent 2 years in Syracuse, I didn't want to do that again.
