| Ended up with another GSD a week ago. She’s a sable that just turned two. I’m the third home for her. People that got her as a puppy gave her to my wife’s friends around the one year old mark. Believe she’s spent most of her time with them in a kennel. Due to their older dog not liking her. Working with her I can tell she’s had some training but not kept up with. What I’m not sure about how to go about is the down command. As when you tell her to sit she will sit then go down before you have time to give her the down command. Always taught to go down from sitting and then down on its own. Then she likes to jump up on you every once in a while. Just not straight on where you can pick up your knee and push down on her snout with your hand while saying off. Always from the side as if she is wanting to jump to your chest. Already feel like we have come a long way in a week. No longer pulling on a leash, drops a ball or toy on command, learned to go out the doggy door to potty on her own, and several other small things that I feel she already had training with but not kept up. Any advice or something different to try with the down command and when she wants to jump up on you from the side would be greatly appreciated. |

Ive trained dogs for over 40 years and my advice is to use an E-Collar. The "down" and "go to your place/bed" commands are paramount to further training. I orimarily use a kuranda bed as the location for the dog. He is not allowed off the bed without express permission. It establishes a comfort zone but also his place in the pack. He is a rescue who was bounced between multiple homes but was deemed "untrainable", yet is now the perfect dog. I never have to use the collar, I just show him the remote. Attached File |

Ray Allen is supposed to ship it today. Used one with my now almost 10 year old GSD that I’ve had since she was 6 weeks old. Got lucky with her and only remember having to correct her with it once. Always was able to use the vibrate and she would focus on me and what command I was giving. At a long distance when she was searching or in the woods with me 1 long tone was look at me (usually because I lost track of her and the sound would put me on her). 2 long tones was go back to she was doing, 3 long tones was come back, or find me if I lost eyes on her. Really wanted to do more with her searching other things than I did, but life got in the way. She was good at finding cows and calves, along with deer sheds for me. |
