Synology has taken a lot of grief for that decision, but from what I understand, it's largely from home users. Enterprises care less, as long as they ship with reliable drives and have available spares. And it's an understandable decision given the extensive time, effort, and expense it takes to test hardware compatibility and DSM functionality across hundreds of different models of hard drives from multiple manufacturers. Frankly, I love my Synology NAS and DSM rocks, so I'm not going anywhere, especially to a NAS that can't host apps or containers, and is made by a company with really questionable commitment to security. But I agree, I think this will sell very well. |
| I have a UNAS Pro. 6 bays filled. It's rock solid. I didn't care about hosting or running containers or VMs on it. It integrates nicely with my other Unifi gear. |

I'm intrigued by this. I have been a Synology guy since my first DS413j. Now I've got two and considering consolidating anyway. If Synology is actually limiting what shucked drives* I can put in their NAS, I'm not that loyal. I like their DSM, Drive and photos. I do host containers as well as a couple of VMs on the + I have. An SFP+ connected UNAS would certainly give the storage backbone for my network and then allow me to run another server for the containers/VMs. * I need to look at this, first I've heard of it. ETA: I found an XDA Forum article that talks about how to enable unsupported disks on the 2025 + models. I might go that route if I finally upgrade my current NASes. | I'm waiting for the UNAS Pro 4, it is perfect for my needs. But the depth concerns me since my rack is 17" and I still need room for the power, SFP/DAC, etc. The older UNAS pro would fit with ease but I don't need that many drive bays. Since it is UI and their ability to keep new releases in stock is dismal, I have time to decide what to do. If only the new 4 bay rack mount UNAS had the same footprint as the 4 bay UNVR . |
