38 years ago there was graphite on the roof.

I was 11 and remember watching this unfold when they finally told us about it.

No. No need to panic. There was a fire. It's mostly put out. The system control tank exploded.

If back then, they had the same drone technology we have today, could the drones survive the radiation to provide real-time information?

For real? I'd love to hear an explanation for that. I know nothing about radiation and barely more about avionics but I wouldn't have guessed that. Crazy.

The helicopter crashed because it hit a construction crane - that was in October 1986:  https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/168706

Bio of one of the Chernobyl helicopter pilots (not one who was on the crashed helicopter): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mykola_Melnyk

After the April 1986 Chernobyl disaster, Melnyk was directed to work in the cleanup operations. Lethal levels of radiation created after the Reactor #4 fire prevented ground liquidator teams from most operations on the roof of the power plant building. However, helicopters could reach and leave the area above the building within seconds, thus inflicting less health damage to the personnel on board. They were employed to cover building openings with sandbags and lead slabs, install necessary equipment, commence aerial photography and atmospheric radioactive contamination monitoring.

Melnyk, among others, was assigned to such missions as an experienced civilian helicopter pilot. He flew 46 sorties over the reactor building, for a combined total duration of 52 hours. The most important of those sorties was the so-called "Operation Igla" (Operation Needle), the June 19, 1986, installation of a giant 18-metre (59 ft)-long radiation probe on top of the building by means of a precision drop from a Kamov coaxial rotor helicopter. This operation was described as dropping a "needle" into a precise spot; it was considered especially difficult. When Melnyk successfully completed the operation during a training exercise in Moscow, the observers broke into applause. Melnyk did not know the purpose of the training, however, until several days later when he flew to Kyiv to undertake the actual mission. The first attempt to insert the "needle" into the actual reactor was foiled by a frozen crust above the target; Melnyk succeeded on the third try.

According to the "Remembrance Book" by the Chornobyl Museum, Melnyk participated in the 'liquidator' operations on site of the disaster from May 20, 1986, until September 9, 1986. In 1994, he underwent two surgeries related to health problems attributed to his radiation exposure.

Some of the robots used to perform tasks after the explosion failed due to radiation, so I'd wager drones might not have been that useful.  Cameras were affected by radiation as well; the distortion in the famous elephant's foot photo was supposedly due to radiation affecting the camera/film:

Chernobyl is a terrible but fascinating story.  I can remember seeing it on the news after coming home from school one day, which, I think, was several days after the actual accident.  I vaguely recall footage of people shoveling debris from the top of a roof.

How hot was it above the reactor? I'd think wind and updraft would be a problem for a drone more than radiation. But I don't own a drone so this is pure speculation

Uhh yeah the chopper blade hit a crane / crane cable. That's what caused it to fall out of the sky.

But, radiation doses to the pilots weren't great. But I'm betting drone electronics would have had a hard time in some of the hottest zones, yeah.

Yeah losing new machineguns for civilians was a huge negative, but other than if you were in the vicinity of Chernobyl after the explosion, 1986 was a pretty damn good year to experience:

Ionizing radiation breaks down the materials within the electrical equipment. For example, when wiring is exposed to gamma rays, no change is noticed until the wiring is flexed or bent. The wire's insulation becomes brittle and will break and may cause shorts in the equipment. The effect on diodes and computer chips is a bit more complex. The gamma rays disrupt the crystalline nature of the inside of the electronic component. Its function is degraded and then fails as more gamma radiation exposure is received by the electronic component.

I seem to remember that some sort of remotely operated space rover was brought in (being radiation hardened) and even that broke down at some point.

I was just about to be born on the other side of the world.

Heard a lot about the disaster though entirely from the perspective of New Zealand's hardcore anti-nuclear community. Their willful misinformation poisoned my view of fission technology until I reached an important point in my life where I had to sit down and ask.

"Was everything I was taught a lie?"

Turned out most of it was.

Stumbled upon this channel the other day.

Comrade Dyatlov!

The series is absolute genius. The writing, technical aspects, music, acting. Very rewatchable and hopefully teachable.

I have a basement home theater and it gets very claustrophobic during the scene when the brave men are walking through the dark corridors to turn the valve with the dosimeter screaming louder and louder in surround sound.
