I saw a TV travel program about this years back.

It was built by a dope grower and taken when he got busted. There is a section of cave that goes back 1/4 mile into the mountain which is why there is so much property. The state had a lot of trouble selling it as not only did it not look like it does now (the front did but not the interior), people were leery of living in a cave for various reasons. One of which was the fact that it is so quiet inside it would freak some people out and they needed white noise or a radio playing to feel comfortable.

When finally sold off at auction sometime in the 90s it went for something like 180K.
