My FIL is staying with us while recovering from spinal surgery. His mom just sent this card. Looks like she's had it a while.

Nuclear duck & cover drill.

How many members can remember these? I was in school in the early 1960s, and don't remember doing it.

We lived in a small town surrounded by a major refinery to the south, aerospace to the east and a major airport to the north. One day I looked at a map and learned that, if the Soviets wanted to cripple the area with a single bomb, Ground Zero would have been my grade school. Drop & cover just didn't make any sense.

I lived a few miles from Reese AFB.  It was a training base with T-37s and T-38s but it did have a runway long enough for the bombers.  PanTex is just up the road in Amarillo.  And Dyess to the South.

Elementary school in the early 1980s.  They didn't do "Duck and Cover" drills.  Not much point in it when a handful of multi-megaton nukes were targeted.

Growing up not too far from Great Lakes, I remember those drills. Same with lining the halls and kneeling/covering along the lockers. After watching countless presentations on the power of nuclear weapons, I never understood the need for the drills.

To be honest, the drills were for locations that were likely to be within the overpressure zone, but not in the fireball. These under-the-desk positions would protect against flying glass, not a direct hit.

.
We did those drills... but not for nukes. Tornados.
That was the no warning response.
With warning, we went to central hallway and sat/crouched along the walls. If it was real bad we crouched facing the walls.
Tornados were a real threat.

Last Saturday was youth day. I sat in the stand with my boy with an AR-10.  About 9:30 a pair of coyotes came running down the field to the right of us and I shot one.   The shot placement was in the high left shoulder and it exited to the rear and blew out his guts.  He immediately picked up what looked like his large intestine and started trying to eat it.  He ran a little bit still trying to hack it down and fell.  He laid there with his rear parts not moving still trying to eat it.  I couldn’t take watching this anymore so I put one through his neck and put him down.  This all happened at about 50yds with the coyotes at full stride for those who want to complain about my shot placement.   I was like it was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen in the woods after 30+ years hunting.
