 Not sure if the size of this Chinese ship is exaggerated some? There is a replica of one of Columbus' ships in Columbus Ohio. It is shockingly small, and I can't imagine crossing an ocean on that thing. I think this is supposed to be a replica of the ship above. It looks smaller.  |

The largest ship in Zheng's fleet that we have good records of was a 6 masted 75m. The replica in the second pic was a more common "medium" example (they built 60+ oversized cargo ships for his fleets) which was 5 masts and 63m. That's still a damn big ship for the time (enormously bigger than anything built in Europe that century - Spanish flagships were around 25m with the largest cargo ships being a bit bigger and all being much narrower) and they built plenty. Quite an achievement, why exagerate it? Smacks of national insecurity, since they can't pull off anything like that today... For context, the Santa Maria was 19m but she was a very average sized ocean-going ship. The largest Carrack (15-16th century ocean going ship} was Great Michael at 73m in 1507 but that was unique. Nothing got close to the displacement of the largest of Zheng's treasure ships (that we think did actually exist). European wooden ships would later get into the 100m+ range (still narrower in the beam then the Chinese ships) and issues with the flexibility of wood were found and declared to be insurmountable. Zheng's fleet was exceptional and purpose built - it was a national project that Zheng was placed in charge of, very different to Columbus. Zheng was also a eunuch, so apparently it did not take balls. I guess that explains why he spent the later half of his life exploring rather than drinking and fucking like his contemporaries. Columbus's fleet was just some ships that Columbus knew the owners of that he managed to convince the queen to pay for requisitioning (he didn't even buy them, he chartered them). |
