Today's lesson: Foucault Pendulums.
The actual pendulum swings in the same arc as always, minus a little bit for precession. The appearance that the arc changes (thereby knocking down the balls) is due to the rotation of the earth under the pendulum!

The length of time of the "clock" described by the "targets" depends on the latitude. There is only one such pendulum with a 24-hour "clock" under it, and it exists (or existed) in a stairwell, and apparently was a temporary experiment.

That was in the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. I remember seeing it in the stairwell when I was a kid, but think they may have moved it since then.
