Think of how high infant mortality rates were even 100-200 years ago. In the 1800s it was as high as 40%.

It was probably significantly "easier" to get away with stuff like this and cover up an infant death because death before age 5 was so common. Not suggesting that women were regularly killing their children, but with rates that high it would certainly raise less suspicion back then.
