It seems like Perez is having the same struggles Albon discussed in an interview about being Max's teammate. Max is constantly pushing to have the car just a bit more slippery in the corners and other drivers can't cope. Once you've pushed it too far and had a crash, your confidence struggles but you're still under pressure to push the car as hard as Max drives it. So your choices are push harder and crash or drive within your comfort zone and be way slower than Max. Checo does fine until he has a couple bad incidents, then he goes to shit because he's driving scared. Replacing Sergio may not fix the issue because what's really needed is a driver who can mimic Verstappen's driving style, but there may not be anyone on the planet who fits that description. It has to be hard driving a car that's set up for a robot when you're simply human. Right now it looks like the most balanced car set-up/teammate pairing is at McLaren. Lando and Oscar are running extremely close times and both seem happy with the car. |
