Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday called on Germany to help destroy a new "Wall" Russia was erecting in Europe, as he appealed directly to Chancellor Olaf Scholz to bolster his tentative response to the invasion. In a speech combining an appeal for fresh aid for his besieged country with criticism of Berlin's long accommodating stance toward Moscow, Zelensky recalled Germany's own triumph over its Cold War division. "It's not a Berlin Wall -- it is a Wall in central Europe between freedom and bondage and this Wall is growing bigger with every bomb" dropped on Ukraine, Zelensky told MPs, echoing an appeal to history deployed before the US Congress Wednesday. Appearing on a screen in his now trademark khaki T-shirt with dark circles under his eyes, Zelensky was welcomed by MPs in the Bundestag lower house with a standing ovation. In a grave tone, he directly addressed Scholz, who faced fresh attacks from the conservative opposition for a halting stance in the crisis. "Dear Mr Scholz, tear down this Wall," he implored, evoking US President Ronald Reagan's 1987 appeal to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate. "Give Germany the leadership role that you in Germany deserve." View Quote |

Vedler, 23, vanished soon after criticizing Putin in January 2021, and friends quickly grew concerned for her safety after she continued to post on her social media account without responding to their calls. "Given the fact that Putin went through a lot of humiliation in childhood, he could not stand up for himself due to his [slight] physical form, it is not surprising that he left after law school and joined the KGB," Vedler wrote in a now-removed social media post, according to the Mirror. "Such people are timid and fearful from childhood, afraid of noise and darkness, strangers, so traits such as caution, restraint, and lack of communication are developed early in their character. I can only assume, in my opinion, a clear psychopathy or sociopathy is seen in him." She disappeared shortly after the post, which was apparently removed by Russian censors. This week, Vedler's erstwhile boyfriend, Dmitry Korovin, confessed to strangling her to death after the two argued not over politics but over money in Moscow in February 2021. He said he continued to post old photos on her social accounts to not arouse suspicion that she might be dead, according to authorities. Since her disappearance, many Russian activists expressed concern that she was either taken into custody or worse after her anti-Putin post, which coincided with a crackdown on dissidents in the country. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), EU's air transport safety and environmental protection regulator, warned today of intermittent outages affecting Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) linked to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These GNSS outages can lead to navigation and surveillance degradation due to jamming and/or possible spoofing issues that have intensified around Ukraine. EASA says that, based on reports from Eurocontrol and open-source data reports, the number of satnav spoofing and/or jamming incidents has expanded around the Kaliningrad region, Eastern Finland, the Black Sea, and the Eastern Mediterranean area since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. "The effects of GNSS jamming and/or possible spoofing were observed by aircraft in various phases of their flights, in certain cases leading to re-routing or even to change the destination due to the inability to perform a safe landing procedure," EASA warned. "Under the present conditions, it is not possible to predict GNSS outages and their effects. The magnitude of the issues generated by such outage would depend upon the extent of the area concerned, on the duration and on the phase of flight of the affected aircraft." The European aviation regulator's Safety Information Bulletin [PDF] also comes with mitigation actions that National Aviation Authorities, Air Navigation Service Providers, and air operators should take to mitigate issues arising from spoofing and/or jamming attempts. EASA also warned European air operators the day Russia invaded Ukraine not to operate within 200 nautical miles (230 miles or 370 km) of Ukraine's borders with Russia and Belarus due to the heightened military activity that could have included launches of mid-range missiles. As the Russian invasion of Ukraine moves into its fourth week, unconventional actors continue to target Russian state-backed businesses with a string of hacks and data leaks the latest apparently referencing pro-hacktivism comments made by Hillary Clinton. The targeted organization is Transneft, the Russian state-controlled oil pipeline giant. On Thursday, leak hosting website Distributed Denial of Secrets published a link to 79GB of emails from the Omega Company, the research and development division of Transneft. Headquartered in Moscow, Transneft is the largest pipeline company in the world. As a state-owned Russian enterprise, it is now blocked from receiving investments from the US market under the terms of sanctions against Russia. Its in-house R&D unit, the Omega Company, produces a range of high-tech acoustic and temperature monitoring systems for oil pipelines, ironically focused on leak detection. The email leaks appear to contain the contents of multiple email accounts from company employees, including not only email messages but file attachments containing invoices and product shipment details and image files showing server racks and other equipment configurations. Some emails reviewed by The Verge were timestamped as recently as March 15th, just days before the leaked data appeared online. Unusually, according to a note from Distributed Denial of Secrets accompanying the email upload, the source dedicated the leaks to Hillary Clinton. In an interview with MSNBC in February, Clinton took the unconventional step of encouraging Anonymous to launch cyberattacks against Russia. View Quote |

Russia says it made a $117 million bond payment a move to avoid defaulting on its debt and the US Treasury Department said it would allow the installment. Russia's finance minister told state-run media Thursday that the country fulfilled a debt obligation, and noted that it's up to the US as to whether the payment would be allowed. The Treasury said it would let the payment go through. Reuters reported Thursday that correspondent bank JPMorgan received the payment and made a credit to the paying agent Citigroup, which is responsible for distributing the money to investors. Representatives from Citigroup and JPMorgan declined to comment on the matter. A report from Bloomberg said Russia's finance ministry ordered the interest payment on Monday, ahead of its Wednesday due date. View Quote |

The Biden administration is considering removing Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from a terror blacklist in return for a public commitment from Iran to de-escalation in the region, three Israeli officials and two U.S. sources tell me. Why it matters: An agreement to restore the 2015 nuclear deal is nearly complete, but Iran's demand that President Biden reverse Donald Trump's decision to designate the IRGC as a Foreign Terrorist Organization is a key remaining sticking point. The IRGC is not only Iran's most feared military branch, it's also a powerful political and economic player. The terror designation means that even if Biden lifts nuclear sanctions to return to compliance with the deal, criminal penalties could still be imposed on anyone doing business with individuals or businesses connected to the IRGC. But removing the designation is a political hot potato for Biden. It would create an uproar from Republicans and likely several Democrats in the Senate. View Quote |

A large fleet of VIP transport aircraft belonging to the Russian Special Flight Detachment "Rossiya" took off from Moscow Vnukovo Airport (VKO) in the early hours of March 17, 2022. The detachment is tasked with transporting Russian government officials. According to Planespotters data, it operates 29 aircraft, most of which are Russian-made Tupolev Tu-214, Ilyushin Il-96 and Sukhoi Superjet 100. At least 10 of these aircraft have been observed taking off from VKO starting at 8:48 AM MSK (5:48 GMT) and heading Eastwards on various flight paths. The convoy was first noticed by Twitter user Manu Gomez, and independently confirmed by AeroTime with the use of flight tracking services Flightradar24 and ADS-B Exchange. I used to work with a woman that was a raging, flaming liberal. The kind of liberal that gives even liberals a bad taste in their mouths.
I was standing in the break room with a few friends talking about the 2016 election that had recently taken place. The hyperliberal woman walked in to get something out of the fridge, overheard us talking, and said - "I can't believe that in America we elect people who support literal Nazis" while looking at is like we were all personally responsible and would start Seig Heiling at any moment. One of the guys in the circle looked over at her, smiled broadly and said - "Well you support literal Communists so I guess we're even" There is so much truth there . |
