Russia’s Economy Is Increasingly Structured Around Its War in Ukraine
The nation’s finances have proven resilient, despite punishing sanctions, giving it leeway to pump money into its military machine.

https://archive.ph/UDh5Q

“Everything needed for the front,” Russia’s finance minister declared, echoing a Soviet slogan from World War II as he talked about the government’s latest spending plans.

The government still calls its invasion of Ukraine a “special military operation,” but the new budget figures make clear that the economy is increasingly being restructured around war.

Nearly a third of the country’s spending next year — roughly $109 billion — will be devoted to “national defense,” the government announced late last month, redirecting money that might otherwise have flowed to health care, education, roads and other sectors. More tellingly, 6 percent of the nation’s total output is being funneled toward Russia’s war machine, more than double what it was before the invasion.

Since Russia sent soldiers across the border in February 2022, its economy has had to adapt to dramatic changes with astonishing speed. The European Union, its biggest trading partner, quickly broke economic relations, upending well-established supply chains and reliable sources of income from abroad. The United States used its financial might to freeze hundreds of billions of dollars in Russian assets and cut the country off from the global financial system.

Nineteen months later, the economic picture is decidedly mixed. The Russian economy has proved to be much more resilient than many Western governments assumed after imposing a punishing string of sanctions.

Moscow has found other buyers for its oil. It has pumped money into the economy at a rapid pace to finance its military machine, putting almost every available worker into a job and raising the size of weekly paychecks. Total output, which the Russian Central Bank estimates may rise as much as 2.5 percent this year, could outpace the European Union and possibly even the United States.

Head of State @NicolasMaduro catalog of "brutal and total corruption" the diversion of weapons sent to Ukraine to the black market; he also urged that a peace agreement be negotiated with full guarantees for Russia.

"Sputnik Mundo" Article
Pretty much what we have here, just in Spanish

"Ukraine and NATO need an agreement with Russia now"

This is the headline of a recent column in which they advise Kiev and its Western sponsors to agree a cessation of hostilities with Moscow, arguing that, if the conflict continues, things could be much worse for Ukraine.

If Ukraine continues with the conflict, the outcome will be much worse, assuming current trends on the battlefield continue.
Extending hostilities it could provoke a civil conflict in the European country, a change of military leaders or the overthrow of the government of President Volodímir Zelenski. While some believe the standoff will last a few more years, it is unlikely that the Ukrainian army will be able to hold out that long, they observe.

In that sense, the Asia Times (No, there's no link to this article, just more Sputnik articles, just like Russia does it) opines that Washington policymakers would "do well" to try to resolve the Ukraine conflict rather than prolong it.

While some think U.S. President Joe Biden, who has vowed to keep funding Kiev as long as necessary, needs to keep the conflict alive for his re-election campaign, changes in U.S. public opinion are increasingly reluctant to continue to send economic aid to Ukraine, suggest that the strategy is wrong.

The Asian media says it is "unlikely" that Ukraine will obtain new funds large enough from the US, its main backer, to reverse its failure on the battlefield. This is one more reason for Kiev to contemplate forgetting to continue its war escalation, they say.

A concerted agreement will benefit Ukraine, the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the newspaper explains, adding that if the conflict were to drag on much longer, any potential pact reached in the future with Moscow would be in much more condition. negative for Kiev.

If the conflict were to spread, the note abounds, that would mean the destruction of more of Ukraine's industrial backbone, and the chances of its citizens returning are less likely. Many of the most qualified Ukrainians They will find work elsewhere and will be integrated into local populations.

Moreover, Kiev would not be able to maintain control of key cities, hold its armed forces together, or restore its economy, given the superiority of the Russian military and the growing lack of Western support.

Etc, etc....

DTSA was established in the mid-1980s as a field activity within the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. DTSA was initially created to review and oppose technology transfers sought by the Soviet Union in its effort to improve its military capability. DoD officials considered such transfers, especially of dual use technologies, a potential threat against the U.S. and a major challenge to U.S. national security. With the fall of the Soviet Union, DTSA's role evolved. While retaining its mission to protect the U.S. military's technological edge in the most critical and sensitive areas, DTSA has increasingly been involved in reviewing critical technologies that could be transferred to friends and Allies.

Adar and Itai Berdichevsky from Kfar Aza hid their 10-month-old twins in a mamada (air-raid shelter), while they waited for the militants in the house to divert the terrorists' attention from the children.
Both served in the army, both were officers, there were weapons at home, and the guys did not give up and, wounded, shot until the last bullet while they had strength left...
Adar and Itay died. On the threshold of their house lay the corpses of 7 terrorists.
The kids were alone in the room for 13 hours.
They are safe, surrounded by love and care.
They were found by Itaya’s brother and father Adar, who had been fighting the terrorists all this time, saved dozens of people, but were unable to get to their loved ones in time.

Bringing it back on topic-

Russian ruble slumps to 18-month low as Israel-Hamas war sends US dollar higher in flight to safety

Russia's currency hit its lowest level against the dollar in more than 18 months, as a new conflict in the Middle East sends investors toward the greenback in search of safe haven.

Russia's ruble traded around 102 against the US dollar on Monday, days after Hamas staged an unprecedented attack on Israel over the weekend. That's the lowest the ruble has been valued against the dollar since April 2022, just a few months after it began its invasion of Ukraine.

Though conflict in the Middle Eastern has historically raised oil prices – a major source of income for Russia – Hamas' deadly attack on Israel has sparked concern among foreign currency investors, leading them to run towards the US dollar for safety.

That's boosted the value of the dollar, which continues to be one of the best-performing currencies so far this year. The US Dollar Index — which measures the greenback against a basket of other currencies — inched higher to around 106.25 on Monday.

Israel's shekel, meanwhile, slid to a seven-year-low against the dollar, prompting the Bank of Israel to announce it will sell up to $30 billion in foreign reserves to help stem the slide.

The ruble has been on the decline for most of 2023, with the currency down 38% from its levels against the dollar in January. That fall has largely been stoked by Moscow's economic weaknesses, with capital pouring out of the country and its energy revenues being stunted by Western sanctions on Russian oil and gas.

President Vladimir Putin, though, has balked at claims that Russia's economy is in bad shape. Previously, he said that there were no "absolutely insurmountable" problems that Russia was currently facing, and in a September meeting with budget makers, proclaimed that Russia's economic situation was "generally stable and balanced," Interfax news agency reported.

Western economists, though, have challenged those views. Russia's GDP could shrink by nearly a full percent this year as high inflation ravages its economy, according to the European credit rating agency Scope Ratings. Russia is also at risk of de-industrializing as it allocates more money to its costly war against Ukraine, Finland's central bank said.

Ukrainian

Last night, the commander of our battalion, lieutenant colonel Vitaly Baranov, died at the battalion headquarters in the Soledarsky direction.

I knew Mr. Vitaly before the Great War as a principled person with firm life attitudes and unshakable faith in our country. He declared the same after February 24, 2022.

At first, the lieutenant colonel came to the 206th as chief of staff under difficult circumstances for some, but in a few months he assembled a functioning combat-ready team of motley officers and led it.

For more than a year at the head of the battalion, there were many different situations and events, many of which had some kind of relation to combat. He was often sharp, but you could always speak directly with Mr. Vitaly.

And most importantly, I clearly saw several key things that are indicators of a good commander in war: he looked after his men on the battlefield; gladly shared his experience, learned from those who have something to show with their actions and head; always did everything in his power, gave 110% and pulled the battalion up by all means available to him - breaking through weapons, equipment, ammunition, replenishment. He never did anything "just for fun" and never felt sorry for himself.

It is a pity that lieutenant colonel Vitaly Baranov died. Even now, when the battalion is at the front. With his determination and tenacity, he could have done much more, both at the front and after victory. It was not a death from a Russian projectile, but they killed him indirectly. The stresses of war, life in tension and moving - all this left its heavy mark and led to this.

This photo is one of the last surviving ones. While making it, we joked "let's take a photo of grandfather and grandson." I remember him like that.

RIP, Mr. Vitaly.
It was an honor to fight together 🫡 .
Condolences to the family and loved ones.

Social Nationalist Party…killing Jews…of course.

I remember watching a documentary years ago that explored the deep ties between Arabs and Nazis. It wasn’t just an alliance of passing military interest. There was deep shared ideology and annihilating Jews was at the top of both lists. Wish I could remember the Arab leaders that were so chummy with Hitler. Just like the woman in NYC at a Palestinian rally holding up a swastika.

Read that Tweet again. Where does it say we are giving aircraft to Israel?

We are not giving F-15s and F-35s to Israel. It is just USAF aircraft being deployed to the Middle East.

And we had F-15s, 16s, and 22s deployed to Poland and other countries bordering Ukraine within days of the war starting too.

I think with good intel the Israelis have more than enough juice to destroy everything in Iran than needs destroying.  Starting with the leadership.  The nuke program.  The DIB.  The Iranian people, in general, don’t want this fight.  The biggest favor anyone can do them is to annihilate their leadership.

If, after 19 months of Russian barbarism, you need any more proof that evil has to be destroyed with extreme prejudice and no mercy, this is it.  If this means World War 3, so be it.

We are not giving F-15s and F-35s to Israel. It is just USAF aircraft being deployed to the Middle East.

And we had F-15s, 16s, and 22s deployed to Poland and other countries bordering Ukraine within days of the war starting too.

Now we say F-35s don’t ESCAL☢️TE, but actually “prevent aggression” ??!!!

I know, I know, trust the science. The adults are in charge now. Ice cream!

Poland isn’t in Ukraine last I checked. And American jets in Israel are boots on the ground at risk of being killed.

Did we offer to fly cover for Ukraine?  That would be 10x better than a transfer in the short term. And yes we have those aircraft in Syria cheek to jowel with Russians and shooting down NATO (Turkey) ISR drones.

I’m just pointing out the hypocrisy that even though it has been proven a dozen times there are no red lines the Biden administration keeps stalling claiming the various weapons would escalate, because Putin said so. But outside Ukraine we are happy to double dare Russia or anyone else.

And the “we can’t spare any” is equally false as we obviously have plenty we could fly, or we have over 120 in surplus.

Why Biden stalls and withholds has zero to do with reality of “escalation” nor with availability of aircraft’s whether our pilots or theirs.

They are born and bred to be professional terrorists and institutionalized it with HAMAS. Invite Arab countries such as their pals in Qatar to give them a new home. No Arab nation wants them. Why should Israel put up with them any longer? They have abused and betrayed every bit of tolerance and aid extended to them.

The Ukrainians are just as sick of having Russians in their backyard. Repeat aggressors should be thrown out and kept out.

Amazing that as long as you are loyal you can fuck up horribly and still get the plush treatment. Great for Ukraine, more of the same old crap for Russia.

Edited by myself on reconsideration.  I don’t think it was realistic or just - but that said, there are many over there who interpret being repeatedly shown mercy as weakness, and that they just have to endure for now and win the next time.  It’s a culture we don’t understand and that is dangerous.

After the bombing in Jabaliya..."Hamas brought disaster to the Gaza Strip."

It's half past nine in the evening now, two hours ago I came back from abroad. I'm already in uniform and armed, on my way south to the reserves. I'm going to fulfill my duties as a general officer of the brigade responsible for protecting the border with Jordan and Egypt. Like everyone else, I have no idea how long I will be recruited and what day will be born. As with all the countless times I served in the reserves, this time too, as long as I'm in uniform I won't write my personal opinions here.
But just before I silence myself, I would like to write here some of my thoughts.

1. There is nothing in the world that can justify the massacre of hundreds of innocent people. The hundreds of drownings are subhumans of the lowest kind. The same goes for those who support and justify them.

2. Now is a time of war, the first thing right now is to protect the home, the country.
Let's not get confused, this is not a "war without choice", it could have been prevented, but now it is too late. Now there is no choice but to take up arms and defend the citizens of Israel.

3. I am going to defend my country from our enemies. Our enemies are murderous terrorist organizations controlled by Islamic extremists. The massacre of innocent Israelis must not be answered by the massacre of innocent Palestinians.
It is important to remember, the Palestinian people are not our enemy. Millions of Palestinians who live here with us between the sea and Jordan, are not our enemy. Just like most Israelis, so do most Palestinians, they just want to live their lives in peace and dignity.
The two peoples who live here, the Jewish people and the Palestinian people, have been held captive for decades by a violent religious minority. On both sides, a violent religious minority drags the conflict into appalling violence. Yes, I compare the leaders of Hamas with the leaders of religious Zionism. On both sides, an extreme religious view dictates violent behavior.

3. This war will end sooner or later. At the end, both nations will have to reckon with the leaders. We must wake up and not let the extremists rule here. The Palestinians and the Israelis will have to denounce the fundamentalists. The Israelis will have to oust Ben Gabir, Smotrich and their gang from power, and the Palestinians will have to oust the heads of Hamas from power.

4. At the moment of the greatest rupture in Israeli society, the truth is revealed. The true lovers of the country are revealed, those who do. In contrast, the nakedness of the wretched Twitter tiktok is exposed, a bunch of zeros who, apart from slandering and inciting, contribute nothing to the State of Israel. This is the hour of the doers, the defenders of Israel. At the end of the war we will come to account with the zeros, the heroes of the keyboard.

5. In the midst of the terrible pain and the enormous brokenness, I try to look for shards of hope. Shortly after the terrible Yom Kippur War, a peace agreement was signed between Israel and Egypt. We must realize that there is no greater security asset than peace. Even the strongest army cannot protect the country the way peace protects. The path of peace will forever be better than the path of war, the one we have been walking on for too long.
At the end of the war, after thousands of dead Israelis and Palestinians have been buried, after we have finished washing away the rivers of blood, we will have to understand that there is no choice but to follow the path of peace, that is where the real victory lies.

That's it, now it's quiet, I'm leaving cyberspace. I will soon arrive at the base and make my contribution to the defense of the citizens of the State of Israel. The torn heart with the families of the murdered and missing.

We'll meet here or over a cold beer at six after the war, we'll do everything to make this the last war.

Rheinmetall has booked a further order for artillery ammunition under a framework agreement with the German Bundeswehr. The third call-off, it encompasses the delivery of over a hundred thousand 155mm shells from the Group’s new Spanish subsidiary Rheinmetall Expal Munitions as well as additional DM 121 high-explosive rounds. Although the customer is the German government, all the ammunition is earmarked for Ukraine. The order is worth a figure in the mid-three-digit million-euro range. Tens of thousands of rounds are to be delivered in 2023, with the reminder due to ship in 2024.

As recently as July 2023, Rheinmetall announced the signing of a new framework agreement for artillery ammunition with the Bundeswehr and the expansion of an existing agreement. The contracts encompass the delivery of several hundred thousand shells, fuses and propelling charges.

The war in Ukraine has compelled the armed forces of numerous nations to replenish their ammunition stocks. In this context, Rheinmetall has already booked several large orders for artillery ammunition.

The framework agreement for 155mm artillery ammunition concluded in July runs until 2029 and represents gross potential order volume of around €1.2 billion. Two large call-offs have already been made.

Among other products, Rheinmetall’s family of artillery ammunition includes the high-explosive DM121 shell, the DM125 smoke/obscurant projectile and (jointly developed with Diehl) the DM702 SMArt sensor fuse munition, plus the RH68 practice round and the range-optimized RH1901 an RH1902 smoke/obscurant projectiles.  The Group’s portfolio also includes the versatile 155mm Assegai family from Rheinmetall Denel Munition, which encompasses insensitive ammunition and conventional HE shells as well as smoke/obscurant, illumination, infrared illumination and other projectiles. All Assegai artillery ammunition types have a maximum range of approximately 40 kilometres. Under the latest framework agreement, the tried-and-tested Assegai ammunition family will now be entering service with the Bundeswehr.
