For sure UAF is in a hard fight post-Avdiivka withdrawal, but the Stepove - Berdychi gap late February looks a like 🇷🇺BTR turkey shoot. Six🇷🇺BTR lost along here in 2 days.
11+🇷🇺KIA here + 3 WIA among the 6 who got away and 3 I can't find, possibly they are under the BTR-82A. (I counted about 17 dismounts and 3 crew).
Brutal at 1:03 if you saw that, but worse in the last close up scenes which I cut out from this edit along with the music.
Film released 02 March.

Looks like the Russian on the far right was disemboweled by a 25mm hitting at his feet and was trying to shove his guts back in.  Sheer fucking hell.

Then drones add to the carnage.

Top notch work, Ukrainians.

Yeah, that was fucking brutal. At first I thought the wounded Russian you were talking about was trying to tourniquet a femoral artery bleed. But after watching it again, I believe he is indeed trying to put his guts back into his abdomen.

Go home you dumb, stupid bastards! Your real enemy is in the Kremlin. If you don't do the needful soon there may not be any of you left by the time this is over.

That is pretty fucking incredible! In this war it seems that pound for pound, the Bradley is just about as effective as the tanks.

[Last Edit: Capta] [#4]
Today’s Bradley-BTR video, speed corrected, soundtrack removed, decent sound FX added.  At 1:34 a direct 25mm hit removes a Russian’s head from his shoulders.

Survivor of the Bradley slaughter decides to stroll back to camp.  Or not.  Obviously much, much later, as the BTR has lost its turret and isn’t even smoking.  Reddit version.

Yesterday’s release - Bradley chopping Russian infantry to pieces.

Casualty pics from several of the BTRs seen in the background of the above videos.

The second video released might’ve been the chronologically first to happen.
From 0:01 to 0:13 of today’s video you can see what may be the same two destroyed BTRs as from 0:02 to 0:04 from yesterday’s video.
In today’s video the BTR doesn’t make it far beyond these two wrecks and there isn’t an edit.
In yesterday’s video there is an edit after passing these wrecks, it delivers the infantry, and is hit on the way out.
My guess is they edited out “today’s” two destroyed BTRs (the one on camera and the abandoned one it ends up next to) from “yesterday’s” video.
Based on the hit angles in “today’s” video, it looks like the Bradley was probably firing from the treeline seen in the extreme foreground at the start of “yesterday’s” video.
Then in “yesterday’s” video it pulled back from this treeline and approached down the road instead.
The retreat route of “yesterday’” BMP is probably the road perpendicular to the road that video happened on.
We are missing video of several Russian armor kills.  The two fresh wrecks passed by both videos, the abandoned BTR “today’s” slaughter happened next to, the abandoned BTR the Bradley was hiding behind, and the burning BMP or MTLB wreck seen at the end of “yesterday’s” video.  Total of six BTRs and one tracked APC in two days on one stretch of road.

The media claim that two militants were eliminated by FSB special forces during a counter-terrorism operation in Ingushetia - they were on the federal wanted list for the murder of three Interior Ministry employees a year earlier

Local Telegram channels report that during the counter-terrorism operation in Karabulak, FSB special forces eliminated two militants. The media claim that the names of the killed militants are Amirkhan Gurazhev and Adam Ozdoev, who were put on the federal wanted list a year earlier. It is reported that they were the ones who attacked police officers in the Malgobek region of Ingushetia. Then, as a result of the shootout, three law enforcement officers were killed, and several of the attackers managed to escape. Official information about the liquidated militants has not yet been confirmed.

The Anti-Terrorism Committee reported that the situation is under control. According to NAC, FSB special forces blocked a group of Islamic State* bandits who were preparing a terrorist attack on the third floor of a residential building. Operational services report that no civilians were injured.

Nope, Bradley round took his leg off above his left knee.  That's why he reached for a tourniquet first but bled out quickly.

That whole episode is what should happen to every Russian advance.

A barrage of 200 rounds of Bradley justice and a half dozen drones.

After returning from the front, the participants of the Northern Military District will become officials in order to prevent military conflicts - Zhoga

According to the personnel program for participants and veterans of the Northern Military District, people who “know what war is and will not allow a repetition of the events that are happening now” will come to power in Russia, said the commander of the Sparta reconnaissance battalion, Vladimir Zhoga, at the World Youth Festival.

We are talking about the “Time of Heroes” program for training future government officials who will return from the front, undergo training at universities and take government positions. Putin has previously stated that “the real elite are those who serve Russia.”

As of two hours ago it's still going on. Fsb says they're dead and no casualties, Twitter videos show lots of heavy gunfire/explosions/etc and lots of ambulances. Neighbors are saying Fsb is blindly shooting in their general direction.

It's isis/mujahhadeen/etc that want the area out of Russian control. They had killed a few Russian interior ministry guys and got away with it.

🪖 UNSUCCESSFUL LANDING of the 73rd naval center of the Special Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the Tendrovskaya Spit. A view from our side.

“Action cameras are placed in a circle, dressed and armed according to all Special Forces USA standards.”

Of the captured weapons, not a single one is domestic.

Here's what the enemy had:
- AR-15/16
- M249 SAW (FN Minimi)
- M302
- M2 Browning, from which they fired constantly along the shore

This action was timed to coincide with the birthday of SBU head Vasily Malyuk.

GOALS/OBJECTIVE.
Between 14 and 27 February, the site was monitored by a Bayraktar UAV. The operation was planned in several stages, namely: “Reconnaissance - Landing - Capturing military personnel of the Russian Armed Forces - Raising the flag - Statement on the creation of a bridgehead - Withdrawal.” The goal of the strike was a quick victory with dynamic footage of the work of the Ukrainian Special Forces both from boats and on the ground.

WHAT WENT WRONG: The Russian Armed Forces servicemen, having discovered the enemy boats, opened fire. The enemy was clearly not ready for serious resistance.

In the first minutes of the battle, a heavy machine gun and one enemy boat were disabled.

Thus, the opponent was demotivated, which led to impulsive actions on the part of the opponent. The enemy began to crumble, making mistake after mistake.

One of the fatal mistakes was to fly to the shore of the spit, which ended in the instant death of the entire crew under the fire of our guys.

The remaining three boats cut along the shore and fired at our guys on the spit. At some point during the battle, the machine gun ammunition on one of the boats caught fire. This became another problem for the crew. With every minute of the battle, the 2 boats that were closer to the spit had fewer and fewer fighters. The enemy suffered losses in wounded and killed. The third boat turned around without approaching and went back.

A wave of discontent in the ranks of military personnel on the Ukrainian side could provoke new attacks on the spit. This operation greatly damaged the authority of the command of the Ukrainian troops.

"They were thrown to slaughter for the sake of media"

Senior sailor Evgeny Gorin, survivor of the landing of the 73rd MCSSO on the Tendra Spit on February 28. As we expected, the group had the task of going straight to the lighthouse.

Gorin reports that there were 7 people in each boat; the boats were supposed to form a battle formation a kilometer from the shore, but they lined up 300 meters before the lighthouse, which also had to be machine-gunned. So, according to him, one of the four boats had 6 machine guns, which were supposed to cover the landing in the event of the appearance of “Raptors”/BK-16 from the direction of the Iron Port.

100 meters from the shore, after the boats came under fire, the detachment commander gave the command to retreat. But at the same time, the boats continued to be shot from the shore.

During the contact, Gorin himself found himself in the water, but after an unsuccessful attempt to swim to his own, he swam towards the shore and was captured. In his opinion, the entire operation was built for the sake of media effect.

https://t.me/okspn/29728

New details from a more complete interrogation of a prisoner from the Ukrainian Armed Forces media operations forces:

• the senior officer of the detachment was the commander of group No. 113
• participants in the operation received only verbal instructions to carry out the operation
• main task: to land, “make some noise” and, if possible, take prisoners
• it was assumed that there were four civilians at the lighthouse
• in the period from February 14 to February 27, the object was monitored by UAVs
• it was expected that there would be Russian military personnel at the lighthouse before the separation
• Gorin himself was a medic, and in case of emergency he had to duplicate the regular medics of group No. 113
• collection points for the wounded on the shore were designated in case of landing at the lighthouse
• there were only 4 boats
• 30-40 minutes were allotted for the operation
• the machine gun of the Alpha subgroup was the first to start working; after being hit, its box caught fire
• The 73rd center did not expect fire resistance from the shore
• one of the boat drivers stepped on the gas, and the boat was thrown ashore
• the boat that washed ashore immediately came under fire
• one of those who jumped from the boat drowned (in total, at least 8-200 confirmed)
• the fourth boat with machine gunners “fucked up”
• official statements in the media make the prisoner smile

In fact, we can say that the media operation planned by the 73rd center became a media success for us.

Wonder what it's like being a "Russian Businessman" right now? Between dodging the draft and scant pickings for theft... I have a feeling that times is hard.

The thought of the FSB trying to round up Vinny the Vatnik to send him off to the front makes me smile.

Threat from the North-West

As the Russian army succeeds in the Northern Military District zone, primarily in the Donbass, the Western coalition will begin to create a cascade of new threats in other directions.

Russia has three distinctly vulnerable places: Transnistria, Kaliningrad and St. Petersburg.

In the case of Transnistria, we are talking about the protection of Russian citizens in this republic, and the military group of the Russian Armed Forces located there, namely two reinforced motorized rifle battalions and a huge warehouse of Soviet weapons. The enemy subjected Transnistria to an economic blockade.

Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave, the last of the visible achievements of the USSR's victory in the Second World War. Its economic, military and political blockade was already applied at the beginning of the Northeast Military District, and will continue to be applied in the foreseeable future. Threats in this regard have already been voiced.

St. Petersburg and the St. Petersburg province (also known as the Leningrad region) are closest to NATO’s forward lines on the Eastern flank. St. Petersburg is the largest and most important scientific center and export hub, through which 200 million tons of export cargo passes, and specifically from Ust-Luga 100 million tons per year.

Britain and its allies are extremely dissatisfied with the fact that sanctions and hostilities not only did not weaken the Russian economy, but gave it a powerful incentive for development. Only the real industrial sector of the Russian Federation increased over the year by more than 3%.

The Western coalition plans to solve two problems:
✖️Pull a significant part of the Russian armed forces away from the Northern Military District zone, creating non-illusory military threats to the North-West of Russia.
✖️Deal a painful blow to Russian exports through the Baltic.

Probably for this purpose, military provocations are being undertaken using drones to strike St. Petersburg and targets in the Leningrad region. This is very likely being done from the territory of the Baltic countries, pushing Russia to resolve the Baltic issue by military means. After which, Western countries will have grounds to block Russia in the Baltic.

Literally. Britain's task is to force us to launch a military operation against the Baltic countries, that is, to actually attack NATO.
The attack on the residential sector of St. Petersburg is a precursor to larger military provocations.

There is a non-zero probability of an attack on one of the frigates of the Baltic Fleet by unknown naval drones.

The activation of the North-Western direction is most likely carried out by the hands of British intelligence together with their “colleagues” from the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine. The British are the most sophisticated warmongers in the history of the world.

Against this background, it is worth developing a comprehensive strategy for creating counter-threats in the North-West, including directly for Great Britain, and being prepared at any moment for an exponential increase in threats and provocations in the Baltic.

The United States has revealed the timing of sending troops to Ukraine

Billionaire Sachs: Biden will send troops to Ukraine if re-elected

MOSCOW, March 3 – RIA Novosti. President Joe Biden will send US military personnel to Ukraine if he is re-elected for a second term, this opinion was expressed on social network X by American billionaire David Sachs

“Biden initially opposed sending F-16 fighter jets, Abrams tanks and long-range missiles to Ukraine on the grounds that it could start World War III. He has already sent all of this,” he wrote.

According to him, sending ground troops remains “the only taboo,” but French President  Emmanuel Macron has already raised this topic. In addition, information is received “daily” that NATO special forces are already operating in Ukraine.
"
"Biden can't do it (send troops - ed.) before the election because it would be too unpopular. But I have no doubt that if he gets re-elected, he will send ground troops to Ukraine," Sachs said.

In March 2022, Biden stated that sending offensive equipment, planes and tanks with American troops to Ukraine would mean the start of the third world war. In February 2023, Biden ruled out the transfer of F-16 fighters to the Ukrainian Armed Forces because they “don’t need them.”

At the same time, the first batch of American Abrams tanks was delivered to Ukraine in September 2023; in total, the United States promised to supply 31 tanks to Kyiv. In August 2023, the United States approved the transfer of F-16s to Ukraine from Denmark and the Netherlands ; the Ukrainian Armed Forces will receive them from third countries after pilot training is completed.

The next US presidential elections will be held in November this year. Donald Trump and Nikki Haley are vying for the Republican nomination . Biden has stated that he intends to be re-elected from the Democratic Party.

President Vladimir Putin, in his address to the Federal Assembly, emphasized that everything that the West comes up with really threatens a conflict with the use of nuclear weapons, and therefore the destruction of civilization as a whole. He also commented on the conversations of European leaders about the possibility of sending NATO troops to Ukraine; this, according to the president, could lead to “tragic” consequences.

...Accordingly, for Ukraine and the West, the condition for change seems to be the departure from power in one form or another of Vladimir Putin (extremely unlikely for the foreseeable future), while the Russian leadership apparently pins its hopes on a possible change of power in the United States in the elections in November 2024 of the year. Therefore, Moscow most likely intends to continue hostilities at least until 2025, and possibly further, in anticipation of achieving powerful military superiority over Ukraine...

...In conditions of a deadlock at the front and in an effort to exert primarily political pressure on the enemy, increased attention will be paid to politically sensitive and propaganda-significant attacks on each other’s rear targets, increasingly shifting to a “war of the cities” in the spirit of the Iran-Iraq War. This trend is clearly noticeable on the Ukrainian side, including in the form of its constant demands from the West for long-range weapons. So we can expect civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure to increase. Russian resources are significant, but simply increasing the production and repair of obsolete tanks, artillery systems and shells will not ensure military success, but will only turn the war into a permanent one, with many years of colossal expenditure of national wealth and sooner or later negative socio-economic and internal political consequences. The turning point can only be achieved by saturating the armed forces with modern means of warfare, primarily high-precision and unmanned, as well as reconnaissance, target designation and electronic warfare equipment. This is a non-trivial task from both a technological and military-industrial point of view. Russia is unlikely to be able to get by with cheap and palliative political, military and industrial solutions...

But after such analyzes a reasonable question arises: “Who is to blame for this chaos?”

#Review #Summary for March 3, 2024

1/1

▪️The issue of open participation of NATO troops in the war in Ukraine has moved from the category “unthinkable” to “discussed.” Scholz turned over foreign specialists who are already helping the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The interception of German military experts regarding calculations of the needs for Taurus missiles for the destruction of the Crimean Bridge is indicative - such issues are already being calmly discussed at the middle level in the Bundeswehr. NATO countries are conducting exercises on the eastern flank and developing logistics routes along the borders of Russia and Belarus “from sea to sea.”

▪️The reason for such discussions was Ukraine’s inability to resist Russia “for a long time.” Experts from the United States talk about irreparable damage already caused to the demography of Ukraine. The once elite units like the Special Operations Forces, Main Intelligence Directorate and the 3rd Special Operations Brigade are already recruited according to the same principle: less than 35 years of age. A political crisis is coming: the presidential elections canceled by Zelensky were supposed to take place in March, and in May all conceivable terms for his legal stay in power expire. The situation is complicated by Kiev's expectation of an even larger-scale offensive by the Russian Army.

▪️At the moment, the Russian Armed Forces are developing success west of Avdeevka: battles are taking place near Berdychi, Semenovka, Orlovka, Tonenkoye. The enemy holds the lines and skillfully takes advantage of our mistakes: either our motorized rifles found themselves without grenade launchers against the lightly armored Bradley, or the headquarters draw maps based on beautiful video reports with flags in villages that have not yet been cleared.

▪️At Chasov Yar, the Russian Army continues to advance through Ivanovskoye (Krasnoe). Heavy fighting ensues, but the enemy manages to be pushed to the outskirts.

▪️From Maryinka, our troops are attacking in three directions: to the west - towards Kurakhovo through Georgievka, to the south - through the settlement. Pobeda and Novomikhailovka for access to Ugledar, to the north - towards Krasnogorovka.

▪️On the Zaporozhye front, there were the heaviest bloody battles in Rabotino. Again a week ago we rushed to report, but the enemy is conducting a maneuverable defense. The village, located in a lowland, is pitted with trenches and communication passages, which allows the enemy to move. From the flanks, our troops are seriously preparing for a strike.

▪️Fighting continues in Krynki in the Kherson direction. In addition, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are sitting in small groups near the Antonovsky Bridge in “dachas”. “Beautiful reports” about the exact defeat of the enemy by TOS come from the lower levels. After viewing footage of objective control, management’s eyes may pop out of their heads from such “accuracy.”

▪️Our aviation (as well as military aircraft) with FAB and UMPC are working hard. The pilots are wondering why not carry out a large-scale operation to destroy the air defense of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, at least in the front line. Several times a week, our comrades are forced to dodge enemy missiles in multi-ton vehicles (the Armed Forces of Ukraine, by the way, chalk up a “defeat” at the moment of launch, hence the enemy’s space statistics).

1/2

▪️FPV drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine pose a huge problem along the entire front. The enemy is already changing frequencies and ordering industrial production from foreign factories with this changed parameter. That is, our electronic warfare is no longer always effective against them. Our well-known project for the production of such kamikaze UAVs, due to its organizational and legal form and corresponding bulkiness, can hardly afford this. It is necessary to diversify production, incl. due to the involvement of front-line workshops, of which there are already a huge number.

▪️Terrorist attacks on the Russian border continue. At the same time, our troops are increasing counter-battery warfare, hitting targets on enemy territory and hitting their strongholds. But due to the blatant bureaucracy and lack of understanding among management (as well as their unwillingness to take responsibility) of the importance of information work, it remains at a formal level, but paper indicators are likely to grow compared to the same period last year.

▪️Meanwhile, Kharkov Ukrainian Armed Forces are preparing for defense. The population of the city sees the bunkers, the movement of equipment and the partial evacuation of documentation. A new element was the systematic work of FABs along the enemy border area. “We’ll push it back,” the Supreme Commander said some time ago. Apparently the enemy is very concerned about this.

▪️In general, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are experiencing a shortage of personnel and equipment, Kyiv is begging for weapons and help in all sorts of places, and military-industrial corporations are fueling the conflict through their purchased politicians. Leaders in the West are not very interested in Russia’s readiness for dialogue (not to be regarded as readiness for a ceasefire).

The summary was compiled by: Two majors

Roscosmos decided to sell off part of its property after losing orders and Western partners

The Roscosmos State Corporation, having lost almost 80% of its income from cooperation with foreign partners due to the war in Ukraine, plans to sell off non-core assets worth more than 11.4 billion rubles. A representative of the state corporation reported this to RBC. According to him, we are talking about more than 150 objects for various purposes, including land and property complexes, boarding houses and recreation centers. Funds from the sale of property will be used to “improve the financial and economic condition of the enterprises” of the state corporation.

The list of property proposed for sale in 2024 includes objects in Moscow and the Moscow region, Krasnodar region, Samara, Tver region and other regions.

At the end of last year, the head of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, noted that the state corporation had lost contracts worth 180 billion out of 230 billion rubles. as a result of the war in Ukraine. During the year, the corporation carried out 19 launches - 3 less than in the first year of the war. Compared to pre-war 2021, the number of launches decreased by a quarter, or 6 units, and if compared with the early 2000s, it was almost halved.

In the regions they began to punish for the name Navalny as a symbol of extremism

Courts in at least four regions of Russia have equated the surname “Navalny” with the symbols of an extremist organization, the human rights group First Department reports, citing rulings in cases of administrative violations issued to participants in rallies in memory of Alexei Navalny.

The courts ordered arrests for the defendants in these cases in Chelyabinsk, Krasnodar and Murmansk for the name “Navalny” on the posters. A report was drawn up against one of the defendants for a poster with the inscription: “Alexey Navalny was killed. His blood is on your hands, Vova.” “The text of the inscription contains the name and surname of the founder and leader of the public movement “Navalny’s Headquarters”, non-profit organizations “Foundation for the Fight against Corruption” (FBK), “Fund for the Defense of Citizens’ Rights” (FZPG), which have repeatedly used the name and surname “Alexey Navalny” as attributes and symbols,” says the court ruling in her case.

The author of the telegram channel Vitaly Akhmerov spoke about a similar case: in Ulyanovsk a report was drawn up against him for mentioning the name “Navalny”.

The punishment for Navalny’s last name, given the wide geography, can be considered a new practice, and not “excesses on the ground,” according to the lawyers of the First Department. They note that the surname “Navalny” cannot be considered extremist symbols, no matter where it is written.

Sweden suspected the Russian Orthodox Church of espionage

Swedish intelligence (Sapo) has warned that the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) was being used by the Russian state “as a platform for intelligence gathering,” the Swedish Religious Institutions Grants Agency said in a statement. After an intelligence warning, the Swedish Grants Agency decided to reduce support for the Russian Orthodox Church. Another reason for the decline in support was the inconsistency of the Moscow Patriarchate with the “criteria of democracy.”

“From the comments of the Swedish Security Service, it appears that representatives of the religious community had contacts with people who work for the Russian security and intelligence services,” the grant agency said in a statement. It also states that the Russian Orthodox Church receives significant funding from the Russian state, and its representatives supported and encouraged the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Russian Orthodox Church rejected the accusations brought against it, the agency said in a statement.

Poland plans to ban food imports from Russia

The Polish authorities may follow the example of Latvia and ban the import of agricultural products from Russia, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said. “Latvia has decided to introduce an embargo on imports of (agricultural) products from Russia. We will analyze the situation in Latvia, and I do not rule out that Poland will come up with a similar initiative,” Tusk was quoted as saying by Reuters. He said the European Union needs to “seriously focus on improving regulation” when it comes to grain and food imports from the east.

The head of the Polish government plans to discuss this issue at a meeting with protesting farmers demanding the introduction of quotas on the number of trucks from Ukraine entering the EU, since the problem directly affects the export of agricultural products from Russia and Belarus. The coordinator of the farmers' protest, Karol Pieczynski, said that the Poles are starting a blockade of the Lithuanian border in order to stop the import of Ukrainian grain. According to him, farmers intend to block all grain traffic.

On February 23, the Latvian Seimas banned the import of agricultural products and animal feed from Russia and Belarus. The ban also applies to products coming from third countries if they were produced in these Russia and Belarus. However, the transit of such goods to other EU countries through the territory of Latvia is permitted.

From 0:01 to 0:13 of today's video you can see what may be the same two destroyed BTRs as from 0:02 to 0:04 from yesterday's video.
In today's video the BTR doesn't make it far beyond these two wrecks and there isn't an edit.
In yesterday's video there is an edit after passing these wrecks, it delivers the infantry, and is hit on the way out.
My guess is they edited out "today's" two destroyed BTRs (the one on camera and the abandoned one it ends up next to) from "yesterday's" video.
Based on the hit angles in "today's" video, it looks like the Bradley was probably firing from the treeline seen in the extreme foreground at the start of "yesterday's" video.
Then in "yesterday's" video it pulled back from this treeline and approached down the road instead.
The retreat route of "yesterday'" BMP is probably the road perpendicular to the road that video happened on.
We are missing video of several Russian armor kills.  The two fresh wrecks passed by both videos, the abandoned BTR "today's" slaughter happened next to, the abandoned BTR the Bradley was hiding behind, and the burning BMP or MTLB wreck seen at the end of "yesterday's" video.  Total of six BTRs and one tracked APC in two days on one stretch of road.

Two really good articles on NORK/Russian trade.
Tons of good images.

Russia obscures North Korea arms trade by moving operation out of military port
Experts suggest Russia switched to using commercial port in response to international scrutiny of alleged weapons trade

Anton Sokolin | Colin ZwirkoFebruary 28, 2024

This is the first article in a two-part series analyzing major changes to alleged North Korea-Russia maritime arms trade in the first two months of 2024. Part two can be found here.

Russia has stopped using a military port in its alleged maritime weapons trade with North Korea in favor of a commercial port, according to NK Pro analysis, in what appears to be an effort to convince observers the trade is not military related.

The shipping operation started last August right after DPRK leader Kim Jong Un was seen showing Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu various missiles in Pyongyang, and right before Kim met Vladimir Putin in Russia.

Russia has denied it is importing weapons from North Korea, but outside experts largely agree that evidence for Russia’s use of DPRK short-range ballistic missiles against Ukraine since December is strong.

However, no ships have appeared in satellite imagery at the North Korean Port in Rason since Feb. 12, pointing to a possible halt in shipments or change in the operation.

UN-DUNAY-ABLE?

NK Pro analysis of Planet Labs satellite imagery shows Russian ships accused of transferring weapons to Russia from North Korea’s Rason Port stopped using a military port in Dunay to the east of Vladivostok in late December.

Instead, the four Russian ships that NK Pro has linked to the alleged arms trade operation — Lady R, Angara, Maia-1 and Maria — have moved between Rason and a commercial port further east called Vostochny Port. The Maia-1 and Lady R were last seen there on Feb. 8, before the Maia-1 went to Rason on Feb. 12.

The ships started using Vostochny Port as early as Oct. 2, but they continued to dock at Dunay to transfer containers alongside Russian warships until the Russian cargo ship Angara’s final visit from around Dec. 17 to 21.

Since the ships stopped going to Dunay, the Maia-1 appears to have made at least five round trips from Vostochny Port to Rason and back, while the Angara made at least two round trips and the Maria three, NK Pro analysis shows.

The initial move to start using Vostochny could have been part of an effort to create plausible deniability about the contents of the shipments, and the timing of the move could have been due to greater international attention on the operation, according to Joseph Byrne, a research fellow at RUSI’s Proliferation and Nuclear Policy program.

Washington publicly revealed evidence of the operation on Oct. 13, including naming the Angara and claiming it had tracked domestic train shipments of containers from Dunay to a weapons depot in Tikhoretsk in western Russia.

Open-source analyses have yet to nail down evidence of specific containers moving from Rason to Dunay or Vostochny and on to Tikhoretsk and other Russian weapon depots closer to the Ukraine border, but evidence of DPRK artillery shells and missiles in Ukraine means they are getting to the frontlines somehow.

“They were exclusively shipping to Dunay” from mid-August when the operation began, but “when it all became public, they had to switch it up,” Byrne told NK Pro.

“They had to make it deniable, as they were getting hounded, and it was hard to deny with it going right to a military-only facility.”

Byrne said it’s “absolutely” feasible that Russia would use a large commercial container port to receive North Korean weapons, but that it’s “dangerous” and “hugely risky.”

Katsu Furukawa, a former U.N. Panel expert and specialist on DPRK sanctions evasion, told NK Pro that mixing up illegal cargo with legal cargo at a commercial port is “smuggling 101.”

But he said relying on such ports for military purposes isn’t easy, explaining why Vostochny was not the first choice as the operation’s hub. “It requires coordination with many stakeholders, like port authorities or commercial vessel operators.”

He also noted the potential dangers of using commercial ports for military transshipments due to explosion risks.

“Since the Russian military is involved, I am sure they are taking serious precautions — because not only their careers but lives are on the line.”

Furukawa said that Russian smugglers might have initially relied on Dunay out of “recklessness” but had to change their tactics after the U.S. and other governments caught them.

For one, the process at Dunay was makeshift and likely not suitable for a long-term operation, using trucks to move containers two at a time between docked ships and a nearby staging area, and more trucks to move the stacked containers to load on trains up the road.

Byrne said Russia may have also considered using the Dunay port the “proper thing to do” in terms of security for moving weapons, noting it is also closer to Rason than Vostochny.

Without the involvement of a military port, it has become more difficult to determine with certainty that recent shipments are still part of the arms trade operation, though the fact that the same ships continued to transfer the same kinds of containers from the same piers in Rason suggests the operation did not fundamentally change.

The U.S. has sanctioned all four aforementioned ships along with the port at Dunay over suspected arms transfers to Russia from North Korea.

Washington also sanctioned Russian companies operating at Vostochny Port — Vostochnaya Stevedoring Company (VSC) and TransContainer — saying VSC owns and operates a terminal at Vostochny Port where the four identified vessels have berthed on multiple occasions. Both companies belong to Russia-based Global Ports.

TransContainer, whose logo was on the containers carried by vessels in the DPRK operation, provides military transportation services to the Russian government and participated “in the illicit transshipment of North Korean munitions and weapons systems for use on the battlefield in Ukraine,” according to the U.S. Treasury Department.

The two companies had not replied to NK Pro requests for comment on their alleged role in the shipping operation at time of publication.

Russian ship rejoins North Korea weapons trade, only for operation to go on hold
Vessels linked to alleged arms shipments have not appeared at ports in recent weeks, possibly due to production issues

Anton Sokolin | Colin ZwirkoFebruary 29, 2024

This is the second article in a two-part series analyzing major changes to alleged North Korea-Russia maritime arms trade in the first two months of 2024. Part one can be found here.

A Russian cargo ship recently rejoined an alleged weapons shipping operation with North Korea after a three-month hiatus, replacing another that recently traveled to a Chinese port for possible maintenance work, according to NK Pro analysis.

But soon after it carried containers from North Korea’s Rason Port to Russia’s Vostochny Port in early February, the entire maritime operation appeared to go on hold, as Russian ships linked to the trade stopped appearing at either port in available satellite imagery.

It is unclear if this is due to production problems at DPRK weapons factories or another issue. Other signs point to a resumption in the future, however, highlighting the need to continue monitoring the vessels.

The two countries started the operation last August, initially between Rason and a Russian military port at Dunay, and the four identified Russian cargo ships have made at least 32 trips to North Korea since then, NK Pro has found.

The U.S. maintains Pyongyang is sending artillery shells and ballistic missiles to Moscow for use in its war in Ukraine, with outside experts identifying evidence of both on the battlefield.

LADY R TAGS IN

The Russian cargo ship Lady R returned to Rason on Feb. 4 for the first time since late October, according to NK Pro analysis of Planet Labs high-resolution imagery.

It was moored at a government-owned port in central Vladivostok over the winter before visiting Vostochny Port on Jan. 30 and again on Feb. 8 after picking up containers at Rason.

NK Pro was first to reveal the ship’s participation in the alleged arms trade last fall. The U.S.-sanctioned Lady R was previously involved in a controversial shipment of Russian military equipment and possibly weapons to South Africa.

The other three ships identified by NK Pro and others moving containers between Rason and Far East Russian ports are the Angara, Maia-1 and Maria.

The Lady R’s return to the DPRK operation could have been to replace the Angara, which left Vostochny for Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard in China’s Zhejiang Province around the same time, according to automatic identification system (AIS) broadcasting data and satellite imagery.

The exact purpose of this trip to China is still unclear, but it appears related to repairs or maintenance.

Imagery and AIS data show the Lady R was anchored at a berth adjacent to the Dalzavod Ship-Repair Center in Vladivostok from Oct. 28 until Jan. 10. It had made a trip carrying containers from Vostochny Port to Rason Port in the weeks prior.

The U.S. sanctioned Dalzavod in Jan. 2023, saying it is “owned or controlled by … the Government of the Russian Federation” and that it played a role “in Russia’s attempts to expand its military and economic influence in the Arctic, Far East and Pacific.”

During the Lady R’s time in Vladivostok, a hiring manager for the vessel’s owner MG-Flot, confirmed to NK Pro that the ship would undergo repair works and pick up new crew members.

The manager did not state whether the Lady R was expected to visit North Korea specifically, only explaining that the vessel would operate on the “Vladivostok-Korea-China route.”

The Russian Maritime Register shows that the Lady R also renewed major maritime certificates on Jan. 16, including a document allowing the vessel to carry dangerous goods, appearing to confirm the vessel underwent maintenance.

After leaving the port on Jan. 10, it appeared to loiter in waters east of Vladivostok until Jan. 28 and then link up at sea with two small Russian oil tankers — Orient (IMO 9061617) and Lidoga (IMO 8711746) — on Jan. 26 and 27, respectively.

Katsu Furukawa, a former member of the U.N. Panel of Experts on DPRK sanctions, told NK Pro that the Lady R’s movements outside Vladivostok did not look routine, describing them as “deceptive” in appearance and unlikely to be related to prior repair work.

Furukawa explained that a vessel would normally undergo trial runs right before an actual voyage rather than “wasting a large amount of gas” by engaging in “strange movements for over 10 days.”

He noted that the vessel’s contact with oil tankers may have been a routine refueling procedure, saying, “The commercial practice of ship-to-ship transfers of oil is not rare at all, being illegal only in the context of DPRK sanctions.”

CURRENT STATUS OF SHIPPING OPERATION

Though the Lady R is back, an apparent pause in the DPRK-Russia operation means it has only made one trip to North Korea since rejoining.

No large cargo ships have appeared at the two piers involved in the alleged weapons trade at Rason in available satellite imagery since Feb. 12, and North Korea does not appear to have delivered containers to the export pier during that time.

Stacks of containers delivered by the Maia-1 on Feb. 12 and Lady R earlier in the month have remained in the same position at Pier 1 over recent weeks, suggesting they are empty or there is no urgency to deliver them to destinations in North Korea.

It’s possible the operation has paused due to production holdups inside North Korea or other logistical issues. It also cannot be ruled out that weapons are being transferred to Russia by air or by rail over the two countries’ shared land border.

As for where the ships are now, NK Pro found a ship in medium-resolution imagery matching the Lady R’s size and appearance anchored in waters east of Vladivostok on Feb. 27.

It was one of only a handful of ships out of nearly four dozen anchored in the area not broadcasting AIS data at the time, according to the tracking website MarineTraffic. The ships in the DPRK-Russia operation have kept their AIS off during all shipments, likely to avoid detection.

Among the other ships not broadcasting were ones matching the size and appearance of the other missing vessels from the DPRK-Russia shipping operation, the Maia-1 and Maria.

All three arrived in the area this month and have remained anchored in the same positions with stacks of containers on board as of Feb. 27, suggesting they are in limbo and may return to the North Korea operation.

The timing of each of their initial arrivals in the area also lines up with their previous known positions: The Lady R arrived at the spot as early as Feb. 10 after visiting Vostochny Port on Feb. 8.

High-resolution imagery shows the Maia-1 at Rason on Feb. 12 — the final visit to North Korea by any of the four ships — before showing up in the spot east of Vladivostok between Feb. 16 and 21.

A ship that was likely the Maria was last seen in high-resolution imagery at Vostochny Port on Feb. 13, before medium-resolution imagery showed a ship matching its dimensions arrived near Vladivostok by Feb. 16.

Another high-resolution image taken on Feb. 22 shows its size and deck features match the Maria. However, this ship was involved in a possible attempt to obfuscate identities with another vessel called the Anisimov at the start of the operation last August, making it the hardest of the four known ships to identify using satellite images.

Tonight, the Kiev regime carried out its most powerful UAV raid on Feodosia.
38 enemy vehicles were used. The attack targeted a local oil depot.

Serious damage was avoided (thanks to the air defense). Also, while repelling the strike, the road surface of the Tavrida highway was damaged and one of the civilians (the driver of a car passing at that time) was injured.

Scheme of detour to the damaged area on the map.
According to my information, traffic on the Tavrida highway will be fully restored this evening...

🇷🇺🇺🇦 Massive drone raid on Feodosia

This night, air defense units in Feodosia repelled another attack by Ukrainian formations. For the first time in a long time, the enemy carried out a massive raid of drones launched from the Zaporozhye region.

🔻With 38 drones that crossed the path, skirting the location of air defense systems in the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, the Ukrainian Armed Forces intended to strike an oil depot in Feodosia.

▪️As a result of the joint work of the assets of 31 divisions, including crews of the S-400 air defense system, the Pantsir-S1 air defense system, and rifle detachments of the Crimean defense group, 36 drones were shot down.

▪️One of the UAVs hit a pipeline at an oil depot. It was this sound that was mistaken for the arrival in the tank. The resulting fire was extinguished without serious damage to the infrastructure.

▪️Another drone, having lost its course, fell on the Tavrida highway near Feodosia. According to Two Majors, a civilian vehicle was damaged, and the area of the fall was cordoned off.

❗️One important feature should be noted in the recent missile strike on Crimea and today’s raid: the Ukrainian Armed Forces are once again increasing their efforts to destroy targets in Crimea.

It was quite expected that on the eve of the presidential elections in Russia, the Ukrainian authorities would try to create chaos and panic. And the closer the election date, the more intense the attempts will be. And the final goal is the Crimean Bridge.

Donk get cocky

If a tank had been involved, the vid would have lasted for 2-3 seconds as 1 or 2 shots from a 120 or 125mm would have ended that who fiasco. Luckily the poor stupid Russians didnt use a tank in that attack as it may have had better luck. Have we figured out where the Bradly was firing from? Distance? Did the Russians know they ere up against it? Why didnt the Russians use the autocannons on the BTR?

The guys from the Dnieper direction write that they decided to completely close down the freemen with personal cars at the front.

Previously, as you know, the guys had a lot of volunteer vehicles, which were donated to specific combat units. In addition, the guys themselves bought various “basins” and UAZs with their own money in order to be mobile in the North Military District zone.

Now you will have to register all the vehicles with the army, otherwise you won’t be able to use them. Frontline vehicles can still be donated, but now they must be donated to military units. This also means that the senior boss will manage this property.

Such a system will certainly streamline the flow of transport for military personnel, but will deprive the front of flexibility. Let's say you handed over a loaf to a specific company. The company commander went to register her. The senior boss says: “Give it back, others need it more.” Conflict. Well, or the company commander still left the car behind his guys. We went to take out 300, we got hit by FPV, there was no car. The boss asks: “why wasn’t the car saved?” Conflict.

Well, etc.

The Popular Front (many thanks to them!) together with the Ministry of Industry and Trade have already transferred several thousand Patriots to the army. I watched this process out of the corner of my eye. These several thousand patriots are not even 50% of what is needed. And the Patriot is not suitable for all tasks. The guys need UAZ Pickup, Loaf Farmer or similar ones.

It seems to me that if the army wants to streamline the circulation of passenger vehicles, which are used for combat missions, then first of all it is necessary to lower the powers and means for their acquisition and maintenance to the level of regiments and divisions. Decentralize the procurement process. And only then introduce any restrictions that will establish the much-desired order in the army.
