I was the one that had to get winched out 2 Saturdays ago. We had been parked next to the stump for a little while. I either hadn't noticed it or forgot about it. I turned right as I drove away and drove right over the stump. That wasn't a good feeling. Stump ended up between the front skid plate and the trans cross member. It takes years of practice to get stuck there that badly. Anyone can get stuck at the top of Test Hill. Only an experienced off-roader can miss seeing a stump that big in the middle of a sand dune. This was that last view of the stump as we parked. It's a screen shot from the GoPro. The camera was mounted near the top of the windshield and to the right of the rearview mirror. I don't think my daughter could see it from the passenger seat and I didn't see it when we started to drive off. It made a terrifying noise as I drove over it. Of course, the GoPro wasn't running when we drove onto the stump and I wasn't smart enough to have the truck's front view and surround view camera up on the screen. Attached File I would definitely recommend that you avoid driving over stumps. |

I get stuck all the time... Leading a trail ride 2 Saturdays ago, I found sink hole to stick my Jeep into. It was on a trail that I have done loads of times. The trail is really rutted and muddy right next to a creek. As as I driving it, I thought to myself, I bet the Gladiator gets stuck / high centers on the ruts. Then I dropped into a puddle / hole that wasn't there previously. My driver side window was at ground level. A different Gladiator that was behind me winched me backwards and we all turned around. Question for you on Silver Lake Dunes, what's the trick to get up the test hill? Traction control off & 4 High or 4 Low? What speed are you hitting to crest the top? I've never been but have family in Grand Haven, MI and would like to hit the dunes sometime. |

Usually in 4 High with the rear axle locked. ESC/traction control all turned off. I didn't notice this time how fast I hit the bottom of the hill. Guessing 30mph. I hit the top just fast enough to make it over. Sometimes there's a nice flat area at the top where you can park. This time there wasn't much there so once you hit the peak, you are going to start coming down. Too fast and you launch and things break. To slow and you sink in at the top just after the front wheels go over the peak and then you're stuck. When my daughter was driving, you can hear me on the video saying, "Go go go go STOP." Go to make sure she keeps it at WOT and stop so she lets off just as we get to the top. The 2014 JKR I traded in for the ZR2 had 31" Wildpeaks. Had to lower pressure to 12psi. Used 4 High. Can't use lockers in high as you would know. Traction control off. Seems like I had to go faster than the Chevy but the ride in the Jeep was so much worse maybe it just felt faster. Jeep would make it most of the time but not all the time. This is what happens when you don't make it and then try with 4 Low and lockers: Attached File There's always someone that will pull up behind you and pull you out. This was my first trip to the dunes where I did not get stuck in the sand. I'm not counting the stump. That was just stupidity. This was also the first time I even attempted to make a complete north to south run in 2wd (rear locked) over all the dunes including test hill. Made it no problem. |

I've never been but have family in Grand Haven, MI and would like to hit the dunes sometime. 10 rear, 12 fronts, traction off, low range, slow to bottom of the hill, hit it, roll right up it. If you get a downshift, it'll kill you even if your transmission is fast. Stick, pick a gear and try to stay with it, low or high range depending on your axle ratio and engine RPMs. Momentum gets you up, lose it and you back down the hill in shame. And ALWAY'S top the crest, especially if it's windy, don't bury your frame, just let off the gas a bit and roll over it if you're going a bit fast, you will slow down VERY quickly. Attached File |

I just rolled pretty quickly but you can cheat and kick the parking brake on some and throttle against that while keeping off the regular brakes so you keep steering control. I do it on ice/slippery drives also when I was working during a winter storm. Try it once and you'll be pretty surprised at how well it works. |
