Do you consider the word "Cop" to be offensive? Slightly or majorly offensive? Or is it just what you do? Or would you rather be addressed as "Officer?" |

Its a term being used since the mid 1800's, and has become a part of natural vocabulary for most people, not realizing its origin. If any LE finds it offensive to the point you even take notice, you need to find a new line of work. If "cop" bothers you, what happens when the crackhead gets in your face and describes in intimate detail, his carnal knowledge of your mother or wife?? |

The term copper originated from the 1800s. There are three theories on what it means. 1. Badges used to be made from copper. They called police officers coppers. It got shortened to cops. 2. "“Cop” was first used in place of “to arrest” around 1844. The original verb/meaning was to take or to seize. The phrase quickly took hold, and as being “copped” began to be synonymous with being arrested, the word usage expanded to include the person doing the arresting, the “copp-er.” By 1846, police officers were being called “coppers” in everyday conversation." 3. Sir Robert Peel designed a Uniform with blue cloth and had Large button made of Copper so the officers were nicknamed Coppers which was often shortened to Cop. If anyone is offended or disrespected by it they should look into the history of law enforcement. Even if it was originally meant as a slang or an insult. It aint much of one. I've been called a pig a few times but that's not particularly offensive to me either. I'm in great shape with a tailored uniform. I look fucking great in uniform  I know a guy that has a muscular humanoid pig standing upright in police uniform with a baton in hand tattooed onto his chest. Might as well embrace it.I've also had guys try to insult me by saying I must of have been bullied in school to become a cop. Not very insulting. I always had lots of friends and was never bullied. Last group of insults typically revolves around I'm just mad that I'm poor and get paid shit. Truthfully I have a pretty good salary now and I have a great pension. So that's not exactly an insult either. IMO the best way to defeat insults is have a laugh at them. Work out. Get your uniform squared away so you look good and feel good. Have your personal life squared away. Etc. Its hard to insult someone who's living a good life doing what hey want to do. |

I never appreciated the term, but I realize that its one most people use, and its better than some of their alternatives. "Deputy" or " "officer" were always preferred |
