No sane NFL fan would deny that Groot is an amazing athlete.

However…

Groot also has accuracy issues and the football IQ (and, I suspect, general IQ) of a potato.

I hope the defense comes around. I know it’s early, but I’ll be taking the Chiefs and the over (like I did tonight) every game.

They will. Spag’s defenses always take some time to get rolling and they are still missing some folks.

You chiefs fans are funny.  You all do this worry bullshit every season. They’re good. Mahomes is Mahomes. And yes, the nfl and refs love them. I have them inked for the afc champ game, and already expect them in the SB.

The first year, they lost a Wild Card game in which they had a 38-10 second half lead over the Colts. It was something like the second worst blown playoff lead in NFL history at the time.

Then there was the game where they became the first team in NFL history to score multiple TDs and lose to a team that scored zero TDs. They allowed Pittsburgh to kick 6 FGs, Smith missed numerous open receivers, and the game ended with a holding call that nullified a key 2 point conversion.

The next year, the Chiefs got eliminated by the Titans in a game where Marcus Mariota threw a TD to himself, and a fumble scoop and score TD got overturned because Jeff Triplette ruled the ball was down by forward progress when Mariota dropped back and never stepped forward.

In a way, it was kind of like being a Cowboys fan, only the eliminations were much weirder, and they never had the national attention.

Then they drafted Mahomes, and now there's three more Lombardis on the shelf.

Yea, Alex Smith was totally responsible for blowing a 38-10 lead.

Refs make bad calls and bad non-calls all the time, however…

Can anyone recall ever seeing a tackle and a guard BOTH committing a hands to face penalty (with one being VERY obvious) against defensive players on the same play, at the same time, next to each other, and NEITHER was flagged for it?

What point if the game was this? I’m a Chiefs fan, but like to think I can stay objective. I’d like to see this in live action. From that picture, it looks like Taylor’s arm is being swiped away by the defender so it could be deceiving. The guard clearly doesn’t have his hands to the face at least in the time of that still shot.

On one hand: the Kansas City Taylor Swifts winning is good for ratings.

On the other hand: if the NFL and its refs were making calls based on what was best for ratings then the Cowboys would be in the majority of Super Bowls and yet they haven’t been since Clinton shoved a cigar up Monica.

There are two teams hated above all others in the NFL with who is #1 and who is #2 being debatable.

1. The current dynasty (was the Patriots for a LONG time and now it’s the Chiefs).

2. The Dallas Cowboys.

Do you agree with me though? The guard’s hand is clearly collar level with the defender. Taylor’s hand may or may not be on the face, but it’s hard to tell from a still shot. The defender’s head isn’t pushed back and it appears the defender’s left arm is inside  Taylor’s. Plus, Taylor really isn’t known for committing penalties

Clearly? Not really. I think it looks like his thumb could easily be hooked on the bottom part of the face mask. YMMV.

The potential is certainly exciting.

Yes, they had another 3-4 drops on high leverage plays, and that's not cool, but hopefully that problem doesn't persist.

Worthy is electric, but those two TDs were a bit on the cheap side. His speed was important for that rushing TD, but he had a pretty sweet downfield blocking convoy plowing ahead of him, and his receiving TD was a blown coverage that Mahomes identified immediately. Production isn't going to come that easy for him all year, and most of Andy Reid's rookie WRs don't really develop into a true WR role until year two. The important thing is, he's a legitimate threat, and defenses have to respect that or get burned. That's going to open the field in a way the Chiefs offense couldn't last year. Hell, it already is happening. Rice, Watson, and Kelce all got receptions on plays that were opened in part because of Worthy's presence.

Speaking of presence and gravity, Kelce looked pretty good last night, and the Ravens defense gave him so much attention that Rashee Rice kept getting matched up with LBs, so the Chiefs got a good amount of yardage spamming the slant.

Rice himself picked up where he left off last season, and he looks really good. I'd like to see more variety in his routes, but if the Michael Thomas option makes him this productive, I'll take it.

I think we're going to see a lot of this "pick your poison" scenario in the middle of the field.

There's also the small detail that Hollywood Brown isn't on the active roster yet.

The thing I'm most excited about on offense? That might be Kingsley. I can't back it up with stats, but it really looked like he got a lot less TE/RB help than the Chiefs gave guys like Orlando Brown and Donovan Smith, and Andy left him out there like that as a rookie making his first career start against a team with a really good DL. Yes, he lost some reps, but he wasn't really a problem, and that's awesome. It's going to be nice if they have a LT that doesn't need lots of help.

The defense wasn't very good, but they weren't THAT bad last night.

People seem to overlook who they were playing. We'll see how things look in a month or two, but that's probably a top-5 offense.

Who they played also significantly influenced HOW they played. I've seen lots of complaining about the pass rush, and that is an area of concern for this team, but people seem to be overlooking who the QB was last night. LJax isn't a pocket passer that you bull rush, speed rush, and blitz full throttle. He's a high end athlete that runs a lot and needs to be contained. That changes how you do business. If the pass rush struggles to pressure Burrow next week, then I'll be more concerned.

Most of the low-lights came against one guy: Nick Bolton. The Ravens picked on him all night, and he's probably responsible for at least a third of their production including the big Likely TD play. He was also the guy responsible for Likely on the TD that wasn't at the end of the game. Other than Willie Gay leaving in FA, I have no idea why Spags kept putting Bolton in that situation. This is year 4 for him, and he's always been horrible in coverage. The only explanation I can come up with is the defense played heavier personnel to deal with the Ravens rushing threat.

I also didn't like how soft the defense played on the sidelines during that last Ravens drive. I would think it's better to risk a few yards and keep the ball in bounds in that situation.

We'll see how this defense looks when it's not the beginning of the season against one of the best offenses in the league. I don't expect it to be as good as last year's unit, but it shouldn't revert to 2022 form.

Another reason why you should wear white cleats, not black ones. Dude was 1 shoe size on the line.

And as much as everyone is talking about that final play this morning... It's the play before that actually tells me something.

Can even add in the 30 seconds of clock they let run off between plays a couple plays before that.
