That video, if you watch closely, looks like the other half hit the water, understand it was scooped up.
Hey, save a million here, a few million there. And this was the sixth Falcon 9 use, correct? |

Anybody know what rocket exhaust smells like???
I was just wondering - I know what automotive gas/diesel fuel exhaust smells like, I know what aviation gas/JetA fuel exhaust smells like, I know what race car nitro methane fuel exhaust smells like. But I have no idea of what rocket fuel exhaust smells like. I know it's different depending on what the fuel and oxidizer is, but I wonder if it smells anything like what I already know... Yeah, whiskey posting.... |

Great Question. |

Yup, I'd assume it'd be similar to Jet-A in smell, if there was any smell at all. |

A friend of mine needed a couple blood transfusion from that. It displaces the oxygen out of your blood and absorbs the water drowning you. About 13 years ago during thruster post flight inspections, I came across a wet one with a MMH cloud swirling in the chamber I got about 8 hours of "ox flu" last year from N2O4. Didn't even smell it before we had a visible cloud. |

The sun will be behind observers for this launch whereas it was behind the rocket on the Vandenberg launch.
Sunset today at the Cape is 7:50 PM EDT. Launch time around 7:19 PM EDT so before local sunset. The 22 December 2017 Iridium 4 launch occurred at 5:27:23 PM PST. Sunset in Los Angeles was around 448 PM PST according to sunrisesunset.com so the launch occurred about 39 minutes AFTER local sunset. The lighting conditions are different but I would not miss it. It might be better. |

Were you able to hear the re-entry sonic booms? Yes you can hear the sonic boom. I was just down the street from DK-Prof that day. It's a little different from when shuttle would come back and you get hit with the 2 sonic booms as it flew by at altitude circled and landed. The sonic boom off the booster hits about 5 or 6 seconds after the booster lands. Shuttle flew by horizontally and the shock wave came off vertically, spacex booster comes in vertically so the shockwave comes off it horizontally. It really sounds like only one boom. Can even hear the shockwave from the booster at my house about 30 miles away. I was in the parking lot off NASA Causeway during one landing (shot a vertical vid on my phone ) we could see that it looked wobbly and had some z axis spin going on and I stopped recording after it went below the tree line and had obviously landed. I was about 7 miles away. When I got back to my desk upstairs was when we found out it went in the water just off the beach. That was the one the grid fin hydraulics failed on. |

According to Spaceflight Now SpaceX has two launches on 30 August. That would be great if they can do it.

So possible catch and scoop in each fairing landing zone.
