Saw this as I was leaving KGLE this afternoon, never seen anything like it before. If you can't tell from the image, it's a twin, props. What is this thing?   |

So conversion w/four engines...it was hard to tell from the angle. The one parked at Gainesville doesn't look airworthy. There can't have been a lot of these made? ETA 21 conversions done for air ferry cross channel Pretty cool. |

I forget the exact story, but I believe the Carvair was on a ferry flight after having been recently purchased when it had to divert to Gainesville due to mechanical issues. I don’t know when that was, but it’s safe to say it has been there for well over a decade at this point. I first saw it when it was parked across the field from where it is now, on a far corner of forgotten tarmac. That was probably 2011 or 2012. Almost exactly a year ago I happened to be back at GLE, and saw she’d been moved onto the main ramp but was looking a little worse than I remembered. Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Now we know how it actually got there. I would imagine at this point making it airworthy or dismantling that Carvair would be prohibitively expensive. They should turn it into a static museum. There are some others around, one sits at Victoria/old Foster AFB Texas in USCG colors. Airliner Museum at KC Downtown airport has one restored, but it's under lockdown thanks to local sheriff. Pima has one from Wyoming, and there's a few junked up around Marco Island FL. They never flew cargo so that's why there's some still around. Convair twins end up junked just because they're worn out. |

I don’t know the story about how she came to Gainesville but a friend of mine was hired to be part of the group to get her flying again. New engines and props were installed. I’m sure a bunch of other work was done as well. They even taxied at least once around the airport. My friend was told that for his work that he would get to fly it. It never flew. Not sure what the deal was but everything just evaporated. The airport doesn’t really care about it much. A check shows up every month for parking fees. I’d like to see her fly again. |
