Cops are letting the reporters get pretty close.

EDIT: And why does the reporter keep saying they are near Merced. Merced is way north. Maybe Merced Road?

The almonds were in bloom a little iver a month ago.

I was taking picture of my car and flying drones through the orchards probably 3 miles from where they are now.

I’m here in Bakersfield. He has passed us several times. Once N/B SR99 through downtown Bakersfield, up to Merced Rd and SR99 made a u-turn, came back to Bakersfield, then hit surface streets during rush hour. Cops everywhere. SWAT everywhere, CHP, Bakersfild PD, Bakersfield Pd SWAT. 2 Bearcats. CHP and KCSO helicopters.

Looks like he is stopped near the flying “J” truck stop near Merced and SR99. SWAT is on it......

When CHP tells people "they got it", which is common in pursuits out here, other agencies tend to say "okay here you go".

Can likely count on a bit of that going on

Also might start hearing things like the dude managed to get out of the RV and is running around on foot soon.

Local news says the RV driver is a sex offender.

I remember the LE PIO saying the guy wasn't related to the boy, good thing this was quickly stopped.

The 11-month-old girl was safely removed from the RV, according to officials.

Houk ended up driving to NB99 and Merced Avenue where he stopped. He said that he wouldn't stop unless he could give the children to their mother, according to ABC7.

Officials said that Houk got out and went into the Flying J, went in the store, and then came back out.

Houk began driving again at about 5:45 p.m.

Houk came to a stop on a dirt road at Northbound SR99 and Merced Avenue at about 6 p.m.

Rodriguez said that Houk escaped and officials believe he is somewhere in the orchard.

Yes, just got up and checked the news.

There is still a large perimeter at Merced and Zerker. The area is full of cops, dogs, and rifles.

The area is full of orchards of almonds and oranges.

From what I can gather once he stopped in the orchard they surrounded the motorhome with what they thought was him and the kids.

Houk fled on foot through the trees leaving the kids behind and they did not see him.

Believing he was still inside they tried to establish communication with him but after no answer they entered the RV and found the kids.

He got a good head start into the tree laden orchard. Kids are safe and back with their mother.

Now its a manhunt.

So I checked that local news link and he's still on the run.

You have to give the guy credit for evading capture as he was in a damn RV - the cops kinda screwed this one up.

It's not like he was in a Corvette and lost the PoPo, this was a low speed chase and he got stuck in the dirt.

I remember a thread here not long ago where the cops had a guy surrounded in his house,but he was able to sneak out and go to the store,then snuck back in,and was later killed by the cops.

Funny stuff sometimes........

ETA-and hopefully he isn't hiding in the RV and they missed him in the search.

Go up a few posts to where I mention that CHP has a habit of telling other agencies to back off from "their" pursuit.

My guess is CHP said "we got this, we dont need you".

Then a little bit later it was "oh wait are you still close by because we totally dont got this."

By then the delay of having K9s on scene was delayed along with the dude possibly outside of a perimeter.

Good times.
