I made a huge breakthrough on my family history. Once I got past the difficult generation, information is flowing. While I do still have some rather sketchy Charcaters spread through there, it's not as bad as the rumors.
My great grandfather fought in WW1, and his dad tried to join up with him even though he was 42. He was denied. That guy's father before that Fought in the Civil War for 3 years, then settled down and founded his own town. Now I'm back in the early 1800s on the east coast, I suspect in a generation or 2 I will be in Scotland. |

That guy's father before that Fought in the Civil War for 3 years, then settled down and founded his own town. Now I'm back in the early 1800s on the east coast, I suspect in a generation or 2 I will be in Scotland. Neat, how are you doing your research? Very primitively. I just started with my grandpa's name, and started using Family Tree and Familysearch.org (A Mormon site, which is kind of funny, but they went through a ton of trouble to put up a decent search engine). I'm still in the Beginning stages, but you can pull census data, along with pictures of the actual census pages from those sites. From the Census info I get rough birthdays and states of birth, along with parents states of birth, which gives me clues for finding the previous generation. All of the other info included in census pages has proven helpful in verifying family members too. Those sites also have stuff like wedding and divorce info, draft and service registration , which let's me find further facts. I hit paydirt a couple of times with Google searches of people's names. I emailed the town that my ancestor found, and they got back to me quickly and are compiling a bunch of stuff for me apparently. Once I learned how to use those search engines, and account for stuff like typos and some of my family being illiterate, I really started getting great info. I'm basically just being a Internet detective, I'm sure there are easier ways but my way is free so I like it. |

Im lucky, my grandfather did a bunch of research later in his life. Its all in a book I think my mom has. He found that one of his ancestors back in the 1910's was an alcoholic and one day crawled under a train car full of liquor and he drilled a hole in the bottom and just laid under there on the tracks drinking until he passed out where he was arrested. I always thought that was fucking hilarious. |
