Don't be "friendly and outgoing."
Almost every victim is described that way.
Fortunately, those that know me would never describe me that way.

This is a good PSA. I’m absolutely the friendly outgoing guy , but I have recently been putting up a wall when meeting new people lately. Sad state our society has gotten to at this point.

My wife's sister is the overly friendly person who would fail any street interview she found herself in. She doesn't have any personal boundaries. She stresses my wife out whenever they take trips, because she treats places like Chicago or DC the same way she treats her 100 person town.

I'm typically friendly and outgoing, but can flip the dick switch in an instant when boundaries start getting pressured in the wrong type of situations. Dude in line at the grocery store is fine, guy beelining towards me at a gas pump gets a different personality entirely.

I think Gavin De Becker said something similar in The Gift of Fear. Friendliness and agreableness are liabilities when dealing with strangers.

Really good friend here missed being murdered by a no-kidding notorious serial killer in Portland by a whisker. The attributes of his victims matched her down to the letter. She made both of her daughters read that book.

It's the sad truth. SO MANY people are looking to take advantage of others. Our society has become extremely adversarial and is devolving into an animalistic "survival of the fittest" mode.

Sucks that I think the assholes that believe there's just too damn many people just may be on to something.

Yep, too many people. And you're right about our society devolving. This seems to be our era's Bleeding Kansas with both sides already like a lit fuse, and when you throw in all of the criminal stuff that isn't even related to ideology, everything is setting up to get really, really ugly. "Survival of the fittest" is probably an apt description of the preparedness frame of mind that people need to get themselves into.

Be the kind of person that the homeless don’t bother to approach….

Related- FBI report on LE assaulted (different report than the one on LE killed in the line of duty) showed consistently that criminals sized up LEO’s, and that “Officer Friendly” was the most likely to be the type that criminals would decide were safest to seriously assault….
