So I’m asking what is the best paint/ process that will hold up long term under a saltwater aquarium. Cabinets I have to go with are only available in bare unfinished wood. The stand isn’t going to get overly wet as I’m careful and keep my stuff neat but accidents happen. The interior of the cabinet will be fully lined with frp panels for water resistance so I’m really only worried about the outside holding up to cleaning and occasionally splashing/dripping water, and looking nice for a long time Here’s an older photo of my current setup that’s over a year old now and still looks excellent

Best is subjective. Me? Prime with cover stain oil primer then use Sherman Williams Emerald urethane. But Im sure Ill get told Im wrong by homeowner harry in this thread, but what do I know, Only a professional cabinet refinisher for 24 years this year. |

So we have 3 votes for the urethane - I’m sure you spray your cabinets, we have a large airless sprayer but it’s more for large 5g buckets and spraying houses, not fine detail work I think. How well does this stuff finish if I have to roll/brush if I can’t spray it. |

How well does this stuff finish if I have to roll/brush if I can’t spray it. I brush and roll cabinets all the time. Take your time and watch for brush marks. They will look fine. And I often use a large exterior sprayer with a extra fine green tip for cabinet boxes, the size of the sprayer doesnt always matter if the hose ( less hose means smaller amounts of paint need to be acquired ) and tip ( fine finish tips are a must ) Spray the doors outside, then hand finish the boxes. |

I'm late to the party here but I've sprayed all my household cabinets with Krystal from M.L. Campbell. Its designed for use in an environment where it is exposed to moisture (kitchens & bathrooms) just look at the list of chemicals it is resistant to. The problem is a vendor may not sell it to a hobbyist but you could reach out to a local shop that uses it. Krystal conversion varnish |
