The "chicken" in chicken and waffles is supposed to be fried chicken, not shredded, creamed, or any other kind of crap.

How can you be from Penna and never had chicken and waffles?  Surely, you've had chicken pot pie (not chicken pie), right?  How about Scrapple?  You know you haven't lived unless you've had Kowalonek's kielbasy, right?  Potato kishki?

Haha, I'm also from Pennsylvania and have never had chicken and waffles.
Now, chicken potpie is a gift straight from angels.
And I question the sanity of anyone that spends hours waiting in line for a sausage that smells like body odor. ;)

No.  Not only no, but fuck no.

I need to drive into the ghetto and order it there.

New Center Eatery (RIP Covid killed it) was my favorite spot.

PA Dutch style stewed chicken.  Sure, I prefer fried chicken but like most PA Dutch food (scrapple, pig stomach, schnitz and knepp) it tastes way better than it looks.

According to Wiki what the OP posted is the original chicken and waffles.   In the 1600's they couldn't afford to waste a bunch of oil just for  frying chicken.

Description
Chicken and waffles, as a combined recipe, first appeared in the United States' colonial period in the 1600s in Pennsylvania Dutch country.[2] The traditional Pennsylvania Dutch version consists of a plain waffle with pulled, stewed chicken on top, covered in gravy.[2]

A version using fried chicken is associated with the American South. The soul-food version of chicken and waffles grew in popularity after the opening of the Wells Supper Club in Harlem, New York, in 1938.[2] The waffle is served as it would be for breakfast, with condiments such as butter and syrup. This version of the dish is popular enough in Baltimore, Maryland to become a local custom.[1]

Chicken and waffles are the bomb, but the chicken needs to be shredded, not chunked, and the shredded chicken and gravy goes on top of the waffle, not beside it.  Pass the pepper, please.

This is it.  They actually serve it at my elementary school kids' cafeteria.

I'm not a fan.  Also, as it is New Year's Day, why aren't we talking about pork and sauerkraut????

I *am* from Pennsylvania, and I have no explanation.  This is the first I've ever heard of it, and hopefully will be the last.

The title made me wonder if it was chicken tetrazzini or chicken a la king, which I recall are sometimes served on a waffle or biscuit.

But this is...I don't know what this is.

Here is better Pennsylvania food:

Cheesesteaks
Tastykakes
Sweet Lebanon Bologna
Several brands of potato chips (I like Herr's a lot)
Soft pretzels
Shoo Fly pie

Get that sweet Lebanon Bologna shit out of here. Regular all the way.

That’s awesome! I’m glad to finally hear a positive story about chicken and waffles, it’s sad that so many from Pennsylvania are denying their heritage and leaving it up to a guy from Ohio to defend their honor. Glad to have you here and I hope you have a great New Year.

There used to be a place East of Harrisburg, PA that served all you can eat chicken and waffles on Friday nights.  Had to get there early or you couldn't get a parking spot.  Good stuff.

My grandparents made something similar with turkey the day after a holiday to feed the family members that slept overnight in their place.  Really miss those breakfasts.

Same. I'm from PA and I don't understand. But I can understand. Most Pa Dutch is once you get away from the basics. Bland, overcooked.

That’s exactly opposite of how every other thread goes. If you don’t have the authentic version then the autistic people here lose their minds. Chili for example.

Why did you bring Ohio into the discussion about Pennsylvania Chicken and Waffles? Is this some sort of inferiority complex? This thread is strictly about Chicken and Waffles. I’ll have to ask you to leave if you keep bringing up Ohio.
