That is Rainbow Ridge at approx Mile 206 on the Richardson Highway, looking north.  The highway runs along the base of the ridge for a couple miles.  The photo was taken a little bit beyond where the road disappears behind the hills on the right in this photo.

Btw, two weeks ago it was smoky enough from the wildfires that I took this photo in full daylight with zero filters.  Then we got two weeks of rain and that solved that.  Just my 200-500mm from my balcony.

Oh.  My. God.

First time I ever really spent any time shooting fireworks, and everything that I thought would work…. Didn’t.

I tried longer exposures on a tripod. Massive fail.

I tried shorter exposures, on a tripod. Fail.

In the end, it turned out that it’s pretty much like shooting the moon. Normal exposure(well, maybe a little on the long shutter side), just frame and shoot. Fireworks are BRIGHT.

That was 1/60, f/4.5, iso 100.

I particularly like that one as it gives the sense of scale; the pier, the police boats, etc really bring out how big the explosions are.

Revisiting some photos I took while out on a road trip back in 2020.  I bounced around all over while growing up, and one of those places was next to this awesome, turn of the century factory building that turned over and was eventually being used by a classic automobile restoration outfit.  To my relief, the operation was still there, albeit smaller in scale, now having moved out of their former larger factory space and into the smaller adjacent building spaces, but still the same owner, and still a lot of cool cars, if a bit more crowded on space than used to be.

Way back in 1984 I managed to get my picture i n the local paper.

Yesterday I attempted to recreate the shot; 40 years, one month, and one day later.  14,641 days, if you're counting.

They've since broken the dam for a fish ladder, and this big honking chunk of tree is hung up, but it gets the message across.

I think it was more than local. I remember that picture in one of our local papers in the Springfield MA area.

Holy cow!

Paper was the Richmond News Leader, the afternoon paper until it merged into the morning Times-Dispatch in the 1990s.

This is a bit of a forestry inside joke. The access road to the logging site has been getting mushy with recent rains. Usually they just use wooden mats, but on this job they had 3 sets of 20-foot steel bridges on site and the mill rep, when asked by the crew to deliver some mats, said hey, you got 3 sets of bridges, just use them!

Saved bringing in 6 extra mats. Mats are visible past the bridges.

Steel bridges are typically used to skid across creeks, like the second picture below

He was just pissed I interrupted his meal.

There was a whole trail (like 50-60 feet) of partially munched shrooms leading up to him.

And, anecdotally, I’m continually amazed at how a creature with no facial muscles can express emotions through their face.
