Went to Tupelo, Mississippi & Graceland last week.
While in Tupelo, I stopped by the hardware store & picked up a guitar. Nothing fancy, a recording king 7 series outlaw It was cheap & it felt cool to buy one from the place Elvis got his first one. I started playing guitar in1994, took a long break, but this has reignited my desire to play, it’s still just a hobby for me, but I love to hear those strings sing. Here’s a shitty pic of it: Attached File |

I'm watching Antiques Roadshow. Just now, a 1962 Strat in the very rare Sonic Blue color was valued at $45,000.

Slightly off-topic, but for years now anytime I see the word "Tupelo" in print, I immediately start humming John Lee Hooker's Tupelo Blues in my head, lol, now I got to go out to the shop and play it or it'll be stuck in my head for hours.

I think the name was an old department store off brand back in the 20’s or 30’s. When they revived the name back several years ago they were constantly on the Banjo Hangout looking to get input from people. Seems like they really wanted to make a very capable instrument from the get go. |

I bought a case for my guitar this morning from Sweetwater & it cost more than the guitar.
Sometimes you have to laugh at this stuff. If you were introducing your gen Z family member (14 y/o who loves music) to Elvis, what 4 songs you going with? I’m going, Hound Dog, King Creole, Burnin’ Love, & In the Ghetto. Kind of a loose overview of his sound over the years. Yours? |

Just gotta be careful. I’ve learned a few songs on there that turned out to be totally wrong and had to search for other videos on them. Also be leery of some of the videos that claim they’ll teach you hacks so you don’t have to learn theory. I would avoid those. Lots of videos on the CAGED method too but again, theory is superior in my opinion. But some people like the CAGED method so what do I know? 🤷♂️ If you’re planning on just learning how to strum and play chords then I would suggest learning how to build chords instead of just learning the chords as there are many different ways to play a single chord. You still want to learn some theory as well. At least so you know what chords go in what key. As far as learning songs I like the channels “Learn Guitar Favorites” for mainly country songs and “Mr. Tabs” for more difficult songs. Also “Angela Petrilli Music” but there are a lot more out there you might like better. Lots of people like Marty Schwartz but I’m not super impressed with his lessons. |

Ive been on YouTube, but it’s overwhelming how many videos there are. Like you said, I’ll watch one video that says to play it one way, then another video has someone playing it another way. It’s to much variation, I’d like to learn from one source, one way, from one person or one group, all who are on the same page. I’ve seen yousician, simply guitar, fender play, Gibson has one, I don’t know, there are so many. I was hoping someone here has used one. |

View Quote Well, to be fair you can play the same songs different ways and still be technically correct. You’ll see performer's play the same songs in different ways at times if you look. A good example of this is Tears in Heaven. I don’t think I have ever seen Clapton play that song the same way twice. Another thing to consider is getting an actual teacher. Feedback in the learning process is a wonderful thing to have and can save you a lot of headaches later on just by having someone there that can correct small mistakes and explain things in different ways. This is something that learning apps and instructional videos lack but I think is very important. |

You have to keep in mind that each note is on the fretboard in about a dozen different places. And then on top of that there are many different ways to play each chord.

Also, play with other people. You’ll grow musically faster this way than any other I believe. And if you really want to get good, use a metronome. That will give you a reference of where you are and can push you to play better faster and more accurate. Kindof like how using a shot timer does to speed up your draw.

One more thing, learn as many songs as you can. Start simple and gradually work your way up to harder stuff. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen someone go out and buy a guitar and amp and immediately start trying to learn something like Cliffs of Dover and then they just end up getting frustrated and quitting because it’s so difficult to play.
With that being said there’s nothing wrong with trying to learn difficult pieces early on as long as you keep it in perspective and work on a lot of easier stuff too to build up your skills. |

No problem. Just stick with it and push forward. You only get out of it what you put into it.
