Happens every 300,000 to 500,000 years IIRC.
And we are overdue.
Slowdown of the earth's core, which causes the shift, will decrease the magnetic protection around the earth so some strong SPF will be a happy little thing to have on hand.
How much impact will it have on humans? No idea, but guess it'll fuck with electronics something fierce.

Would a pole shift cause (some) crustal displacement?  The crust is decoupled from the core, but it’s not totally independent.

I believe it would devastate much of the planet with crust movement, volcanoes, atmosphere, pretty much everything needed to sustain life.  I don't think it would be very pleasant but maybe reality would change instead.  Who really knows.  All of history might not even be real and I often wonder now.

They make it a big deal when it's been known about for years.   Setting the declination on your compass and airport plates updating every year or two, especially in the places that are close to the pole shift, as seen in Greenland.

It's a magnetic pole shift, not a physical flipping of the Earth, where would the energy come from to say, turn the moon upside down.  Now figure how to flip the Earth physically and what you'll use for a lever.  The Magnetic pole is from lava moving under the surface and that's a sort of bigger problem that isn't really pole shift and even harder to figure out.

The movement coincides with the magnetic field weakening so our magnetic filed shielding us from the sun in the Van Allen Belts isn't blocking as much as before, so add some sunscreen when you go outside.    It's a concern, but, as I said, nothing we can do about it.

However, it is increasing so Magnetic North Pole will be pointing at the UK in a decade or so.  More taxes will certainly fix this, when they can't even put their finger on the exact problem.

IIRC, no magnetic pole shift is correlated with any extinction or die-off events. Compared to mass extinctions, pole shifts are downright common at about every 400k years.

But, who knows? Just add it to the very long list of existential threats. Pretty sure there are things much more likely to wipe us all out.

I was always lead to believe in school so many many years ago that pole shifts were simply that, the north and south magnetic field reversed.  What i just learned recently was far more frightening when shown that no that's not what happens.  The entire earth rotates to a different axis causing massive upheaval with the earths crust as well as weather for where continents were once located.  Not a fun fact to realize.  For me I'll likely be dead well before it ever happens or drown according to that map when it does so no biggie for me either way.  My soul lives forever anyway.

They mapped the magnetic dipoles of the Atlantic ridge which has been spreading continually pushing Americas away from EU/Africa keeping the Pacific "Ring of Fire" alive.  The Iron in the liquid Magma captures the current magnetic field when it hits the ocean and locks in the orientation in just a few minutes.

The biggest difference is I am not aware of the exact impact on computing and power systems under one of these events.   It could even be in our lifetimes, (depending on join date ).

If telegraph wires were on fire back in the 1800s event, that is a lot of power in a very robust system, telegraph being only one long wire connected to battery at each stop with the ground (literally) being the other "wire".    Looking at all the problems from that 2003 NE US blackout from a glitch at one local power company's control computers crashing from a bug.    I don't think repeated power losses after massive surges every time a CME hit Earth would be a good think in a work from home and everything is online society.

Well, another Carrington event isn't going to care about the strength of the magnetic field when it shows up. It'll wreck stuff regardless, and with very little warning (normally takes 3-ish days for charged particles to make their way here, the Carrington event took 17 hours). Would it be worse if the magnetic field of the Earth were weaker, or even temporarily collapsed? Undoubtedly. But going from "all of the electronics, power grids, and satellites were just wiped out" to "all of the electronics, power grids, and satellites were just wiped out super easily" isn't going to make a lot of difference.

I suppose that a pole shift and severely weakened magnetic field would make normal solar storms/events worse, the kind that let me see aurorae down here in the wilds of MT. The exact effects would be up for debate though.

How much does it weaken?
How long does it take?
How long will the magnetic field be weak?
How weak will it be?

All unanswered questions at this point. The geologic record doesn't contain such granular data.

The fires associated with the Carrington event were started by electric arcs from the telegraph equipment to the surrounding flammables. The magnetic flux from the CME generated high voltages in the wires which caused all excitement at the telegraph offices. I don't believe the wires themselves burned. hth

Yeah, that's an item most everybody here has, tons of lithium batteries in various sizes, ammo, loading isolate, paint and solvents, all that stuff and no way to replace transformers if a  projected loss comes anywhere near reality.  We barely keep up with getting enough transformers for hurricane restoration.

You are correct. But I didn't say the wires burned/melted. What happened was the enormous amount of charged particles streaming past the conductive wires induced so much voltage, that you ended up with the effects you describe.

I help control the HV Transmission Grid for a career. Trust me, everyone in the industry is dreading another Carrington Event. If that happened today, it has the potential to wipe out the grid. You'll wake up and it'll be the year 1800. 90% of the population will be dead in the first year. That likely includes everyone here.

It'd likely ruin anything in orbit as well.

Maybe if you knew it was coming you could remove the main breaker and shove some rubber insulating material between the terminals to prevent arcing across or if brave enough go out and cut the power lines coming into the house but from the sound of things that might not do much.  Easier to just bend over and kiss this human body goodbye.

That's not the problem. The over-voltage can destroy the LPT's (large power transformers) upon which the entire grid relies. With 17 hours notice (or maybe even less if it's bigger and faster than the Carrington Event), there's literally no way to disconnect them from the system. Even if you did, if the CME induced enough voltage, it would still wreck them even if we had turned all of the power off in anticipation of it and starting dropping bus. You'd have to find some way to build a Faraday cage around LPT's that are the size of small houses at thousands of substations in this country alone.

And once they're gone, they're gone. Even getting a single LPT at this point requires millions of dollars and 3-4 years lead time, with serious bottlenecks at some of the manufacturing points. We don't even make them here anymore. Every one I've seen in the last decade has come from Hyosung HICO in South Korea. Others come from Brazil, and elsewhere. And each one is essentially a custom order, literally a one-off for a specific installation. Not 100% true, but close enough to it.

If something like that happened, it'd be decades or longer before the system was viable again. No one would likely be around to rebuild it anyway.

It's not an issue for such small scale, usually. The reason the voltages climb so high is that the power grid consists of tens of thousands of miles of conductor. Triple circuited. All held up in the air for the charged particles to stream through. The LPT's have an unbelievable amount of copper wiring in them. The longer the conductor, the more charge impact them, the higher the voltage climbs.

A few hundred feet of wire in your house? Probably not a problem. If the solar storm were that bad, it'd probably just scour surface life off the planet.

OTOH, without the grid, the wiring in your house doesn't really matter, unless you're completely off-grid with alternate power. Which just makes you a target for everyone else.

The scariest part is that Earth's magnetic field has weakened since the 1850s, and is continuing to weaken.  As the magnetic field strength weakens, it takes less and less of a solar impact to create effects similar to the Carrington event.

I don't really know where to post this as he is so far over my head knowledge wise but this sounds pretty ominous.  Hopefully it's nothing but we will find out soon one way or the other.  He gets into the effect on human consciousness around the 20 minute mark.

ETA this gets mind blowing on after the 20 minute mark.  I don't know how his head can contain that huge brain!

Thanks for the reply, is/ has their been any notion of switching the long transmissions lines to ground in order to isolate the infrastructure?

Honestly? Half a decade ago we were installing "Geomagnetic Storm Monitors" or some such nonsense on our equipment. I had one put on the bank at my station (I work at a large 500KV and 230KV substation). It didn't work, essentially did nothing, and they pulled them out all over the system and replaced them with...nothing.

If there's a plan to try and save equipment, I don't know it. That makes me pretty sure there isn't a viable plan (yet), as I'd be in the group of people who would be the very first implementing it. I'd be doing the physical switching, along with my fellow operators, to accomplish whatever the engineers thought would work. If that were open-ending and grounding all the lines, I'd be the one swinging the handles on the disconnects and ground switches. None of us have been told anything.

The problem, I think, is that the equipment itself, i.e. the LPT, can be damaged by the flare. Whether it's connected to anything else or not. A good-size 500/230KV LPT can have over two tons of copper "wires" in it, and if enough voltage is induced into it to ruin the (very thin) insulation between windings, it's done. At least until it's repaired, which would require draining it of 10,000 gallons of oil, disassembling it, shipping it back to the manufacturer's facility, untanking it for repairs, then reversing everything to get it back where it's supposed to be.

So...impossible. Look up Schnabel Car, just for a start. And that's assuming the CME didn't take out power at the manufacturing facility too (it would), and that there was anyone left to do any of that work (there won't be).

No, another Carrington Event is essentially a reset button for humanity. No more power grid, communications, or anything we need for civilization to continue. You'd wake up in the year 1800, 99.9% of the people have no survival skills whatsoever. Even those that do, the idiots in my AO who say "I'll just go into the woods. I know how to hunt, fish, etc." No you don't. First off, there are more people trying to do that than there are game animals. They'd be gone in the first month. Second, Lewis and Clark, literally born into that world, almost died how many times? Most won't survive the first winter/injury/illness (whether the flu or dysentery from bad water).

And stockpiling food and ammo won't help. If you hole up for six months, when you DO run out of food and have to emerge, those people who actually managed to band together, form a new community (I'm in a great place for this, there's even a full-on Amish community just outside of town), and survive don't want you, because they know you're a selfish prick who contributed nothing.

Anyway, /rant off. Trust me, our power system is 100 years old, grew organically (no standardization), and on its last legs already. My station went online Christmas Day, 1955. I still have some equipment that's original to that era. There's no money for upgrades or new infrastructure, so we maintain everything to the best level we can and replace upon failure most of the time. That's starting to turn around a little bit, but even if that trend continues, it might not be enough to keep up with future growth and demand.

I know how the world is going to end. The odds of WWIII, alien invasion, nanite gray goo, 90% fatal pandemic, asteroid strike, or any other existential threat you want to name are miniscule compared to the power going out and not coming back on. Every day when I wake up, and the lights work, I'm frankly a tiny bit surprised as I sigh and get ready for work.

Hell, we'll do it to ourselves. Just take a look at how many morons take a rifle and go shoot up LPT's. And those are just the lunatics...not even the bad actors who actively plan this stuff.

That (grounding of conductor endpoints) would not work out so well.  The problem is gradient.  So if transformers/switch points are arbitrarily 1 mile apart, and a lighting bolt hits the wire, the wire has a huge current induced into it.  Since electricity is about 60% as fast in a conductor than light in free air (depending on conductor, I'm just winging with a twisted pair speed, exact speed doesn't matter so long as it allows 1000 Amps to be pushed into the conductor.  That current (huge number of electrons) will want to move out and that creates a voltage gradient, which then flips and returns making lightning like that spot but another strike doesn't matter as there's a huge current heading down the line and the typical ground wire to ground from a can transformer on a pole is 14 ga stapled to the pole.  That would go poof quick and then hop the air gap in a blown fuse or disconnector, and this is on both ends from where the lightning struck, that strike doesn't affect only the conductor near the tree that was hit, others in the area that have enough length and a path to ground (well, easier if you apply emotions to it, like  'electricity wants to be at ground state with nothing flowing' and 'lightning dumps 1000A into the conductor and those electrons want to be at ground'.)

So long wires 3 blocks away from the main strike could have only 1000 or 2000 Amps induced, rather than many tens of thousands of amps (which then show tens of thousands of volts in the gradient along the wire since the current has to travel).   That current heats up the conductors to the point the insulation burns and the wire itself turns into a fuse from all the current injected that had to move.  If there's a quick path to ground, they'll take it, running through the coils of a transformer if it's in the way and *bang*, no pole transformer anymore, and the houses running from that one better hope their power line conditioner shunts that current to ground in the microsecond of inbound strike signature and overvoltage an extremely short time after that (think ocean suddenly rolling away from a beach, it's not a fast low tide, it's a huge one affecting everything touching it).  The $1000 whole house power line conditioners with both spark gaps and MOVs can save all the electronics in a house, especially now that phone wires are no longer there and internet is over fiber so no coax to bring another path in.  We're down to just the wire coming from power company to worry about, so that is good news.

Use this if you want to see what upcoming space weather is likely to be. It's pretty accurate, at least as to when I'm going to see aurorae here in MT.

I haven't witnessed an aurora myself since I was a very young child although we had had quite a few all the way down here in West Tn lately.  They tend to happen when I'm sound to sleep in bed but many friends have posted amazing photos of them.  I don't have a clear picture of the night sky because of all the surrounding trees and the lights from the city of 75K or so people that I live smack dab in the center of.  Eventually I will drive out to my RC flying club that's only 8 miles away and is secure requiring a FOB to open the gate and get a good watch when I know the next one is coming.  I keep meaning to take my fairly new Celestron out there anyway and try to locate the star my wife had named after our deceased son.
