The softest most rotten chunk of maple I had! Only piece big enough for what I wanted to do. Started turning at 6 high 12 around and ended up with 5 high and 10 round. Two coats of resin mixed with alcohol to make it firm up enough to finish. Ice pick penetrated all the way in on one side of the piece! I put my finger thru it in one spot before it flew off.

I am jealous how much time you have in the shop.  Perhaps one day, soon I hope, I can enjoy hours upon hours just making things.

I would really like to move on to something else - but all my friends seem to want me to make these simple charcuterie boards and matching dipping trays, oh well...

Trying to repair a totally rotten wagon wheel today. Got the spokes almost done. Need to figure out how to make a new outer wood part that fits  the steel hoop and the spokes. Fun with wood!

Right? I was vacation till Sunday so I haven't had shop time in 2 weeks or so. Craft show season has been pretty good for me this year so I'm going to have to suck it up and get cracking in the shop.

It might have been asked before, sorry, but what type of finish are you using?
Link Posted: 7/17/2024 7:01:51 PM EDT
[Last Edit: MrSig239] [#15]
I use many different ones. Mostly shellac sealer with ax abrasive paste and carnauba wax. I also use just walnut oil on things that might be used with food.

Too cool man, you have serious skills, I have seen some of these photos on another forum we're both members of.

So, about those magic wands, my wife is a huge Harry Potter fan and her birthday is coming up in November, how crazy can you go making one? PM me if interested, i'd be happy to pay good money for something super cool and exotic.

Antique brass owl bookmarks with turned cabochons. The one on the right is purple dyed and stabilized maple burl, and the two in the left are the last of the oak I had from Christ Curch College in Oxford England. This wood is from the location where the Great Hall scenes from the Harry Potter films were shot.

Both of these were hanging in a bathroom for the last 30 or 40 years! They were covered in rust and flaking paint!
Cleaned them up over the last few days and now they look like new. Wish I would have grabbed before pics.
New color scheme will match the rest better now.
