My wife and I are buying a house with a deck off the main level.  The basement is a walkout across the back and there is a concrete patio that runs the length of the basement.  We were thinking that it would be nice to put something under the deck so the patio area doesn’t get rain.  Roofing the deck isn’t in the budget right now.  What would the hive say?  Corrugated Tin plastic?  Some kind of plastic sheeting like thermold?

Picture of deck before the patio was poured:

Use metal roofing and a traditional gutter on the end. You can get it in most any color.
My buddy's been installing these things for years and stopped using the trex long ago. Seriously cheaper, too.

If the ledger is flashed correctly, you can start right against the house. A couple firring strips to get the pitch. Gutter tucked behind beam w/ downspout against the post. Coil flashing will close the two sides and make it clean. You'll want to either solid block between the bays above the beam or put netting, to keep critters from nesting.

This is the way. We have a very similar setup with a concrete patio under the deck. I used metal roofing and a gutter as described above. We use the under deck a lot more than the deck itself.

Other than the gutters, this is what I have sketched out for my new build.  Will hit it come springtime.

Big emphasis on hardware cloth to keep the birds out.  Fucking robins will not stop trying to build a nest no matter how many times you knock it down.  Probably want to be able to open it up at the bottom to clean out stuff on occasion.

Something temporary (cheap) until you can roof the deck?  I'm just thinking of all the accumulated crap that's going to end up in there.

If it's just a temporary solution until you roof the deck, how long do you expect it to last and do you plan to remove it after roofing it?

If you want for just a couple years, I'd suggest the lowest cost solution.

In that case, I'd build a wooden frame to hold corrugated plastic roof panels and just hang it under the deck. Angle it to pour the rainwater outwards and install chicken wire, or whatever keeps birds from accessing the gap.

One remark about rain. Will heavy and windy rains make the deck wet enough to drip even after you roof it?  Do you still want to keep everything dry under the deck?   If so, you might consider a permanent solution using the metal roof panels.

Probably some time before we roof the deck.  The house roof is metal and tying into it won’t be cheap.

I’ve been thinking of doing the same.  Looking at DIY options, didn’t know they have manufactured solutions for this.
