| My house is under one of the approach "lanes" or whatever for DFW. We're about 35 miles northeast of the airport. Since we've moved in, I've noticed a very regular noise pattern from aircraft going overhead, and when I check FlightAware it seems it's always from some Airbus variant going over. Obviously it's kind of hard to describe a noise, but it sounds like the engines change pitch, like they're spooling down, and then back up a bit. Anyone know what it is I'm hearing? It's pretty distinctive. |
I don't know what will happen, or if anything will happen. But if something does, I'd rather be the guy with a gun than the guy without one.

| Makes sense; they're at about 9k and descending as they go over, is that the right altitude to be putting the flaps out? And that's loud enough to hear 9,000' below? |

| When you start to configure (add flaps and gear) the engines will spool up from idle. You may be hearing them go from an idle descent to beginning to spool up. |

When I lived in SW metro Denver, the daily 747 from Hawaii would fly over my place on its approach to DIA. I heard something similar with it, and later realized, it was a simple Doppler Effect. Jay |

| Yeah, this isn't Doppler. I don't hear it with every airliner that goes over - every time I hear it and check, it's an Airbus. I've had 737's, for example, go over and I don't hear this particular noise. Whoever described it as kind of a low howl is right on. Kind of howl, followed by what sounds like an increase in engine RPM's. |

The various arrival procedures at DFM have aircraft around 12k MSL at 35 miles to the northeast, much too high for you to hear them descending. Are you sure they're going to DFW and not another closer airport? Mckinney is NE of DFW, as are a handful of other class D airports. |

The flights I'm looking at are all DFW bound, not Southwest flights that would be going to Love and not the kind of traffic KTKI (McKinney) handles. It's pretty much all American and Delta flights. And, per FlightAware, the altitudes they're at while passing over are in the 9,000-9500' range. |
