The reason this stuff caught my eye is that it's so cheap, and 13 feet wide. I'll look up the geotex and compare. |

| I think the Geotex comes in varying widths. I think it is designed for road underlay. Putting in a new driveway to your new constructed home, they scrape off the sod, put down geotex, then gravel, and then maybe pavement if wanted. It prevents the rock from sinking in if you’re doing a gravel driveway. |

Watch mowing around the edges and avoid prop strikes. A prop could slash it. We have a bunch of cut repairs. More than one of our guys mowing have picked up a corner of the geotex in the spring. One guy made a mess of the corner and wrapped it around his blade. We get frost heaving so the landscape staples get pushed up and the fabric can get loose. I tend to do a spring inspection while the field is wet from the snow melt and the ground is not frozen and walk on all the staples driving them back down. Iirc our geotex is going on 8 years. It was a couple years old when I joined the club. They initially laid it over very short mowed grass and it was fair then. Of course the grass died and rotted away and the slight slope was enough for snow melt run off to start causing erosion of the base dirt leaving pot holes. It be like hitting a the ramp on a ski jump air craft carrier. Killed the nose gear on my air cobra. Midfield, insufficient speed and prematurely launched to only come back down on the nose gear.  We went to stone dust the next year under the geotex. Iirc we are 25.5’ wide and 120’ long. The roll we got, cut to half its length and the two pieces placed side by side with a slight overlap. Barely enough length for 1.2m warbirds but ok for cubs, Timbers, etc. The warbirds tend to hit the end of the geotex. If the grass is too stiff, the easily nose over there with the sudden extra rolling resistance Jets usually run off the end. Bigger balsa planes with better gear land in the grass parallel to the geotex. We actually prefer they do so due to gas engines, bigger props and the prop strikes. |

The club I’m joining has a runway made with the fabric. Field is an old landfill and the county at one time had put in an asphalt runway. But with all the garbage under ground it started settling and cracking and separating making it unusable. They had the asphalt removed and put in the fabric. Now they’re talking about trying to put down really nice Bermuda grass on the other side so you have options. I’m not familiar with grass types in your area. What do clubs grow on their fields? Maybe some fine grass is in order? If it’s already a yard, might be easier. |
