You have opened my eyes to things that have made me reflect on my life and faith. I still have a long journey in my faith, but you have helped me change to become a better Christian. Jeff, this is the rifle inspired and built around your fight. Thank YOU Sir, for the inspiration. (And I'm not just talking about the rifle...) 
This will mark the first time all the rest of you Leg Humpers get to see a picture of my wife. You had better appreciate it! She wanted me to make darn sure I told Reta that she is in her thoughts and prayers. Jeff, I just finished slapping that rifle together about an hour ago. I'll be at the range with it tomorrow, and you'll be there with me! |

| Jeff and family: Hospice is a wonderfully caring thing to have. They provide comfort and healing long after most people think you don't need it anymore. That being said, it is still not easy. My prayers are that you will find peace and comfort in the midst of things that we cannot understand. God be with you. Know that I too am raising my glass to you both! Cheers. |

Jeff, you've inspired many with your courage, you've changed lives with your love, and you've saved souls with your faith. You've brought together people from all walks of life and from all over the world. This cancer may ultimately take you from us in this life, but you will be with Christ and cancer-free on the other side. Looking at it that way, you have indeed, kicked cancer's ass. Absolutely! I can't guarantee he'll even open his eyes for you, but they say he can hear us. He had many visitors today, many fond remembrances, many tears. Good tears. He stirs occasionally and his breathing is noisy. I'll warn you he runs hot and likes to lie there pretty bare. He has a fan blowing on him constantly. You're welcome to rub his Buddha belly, hold his hand, kiss his cheek, just be present. Anyone you encounter while visiting him you can assume is some form of adopted family. Jeff never met a stranger. ETA - He's in Community Hospice - room 407 on the 4th floor of the James L. West Presbyterian Special Care Center on the corner of Summit and Lancaster. Also, I try to monitor Jeff's phone, but if you have his number, change the last two digits to 69 and you'll get my phone. Let me know who you are if you text. For now, I'm going to step away from the computer and phones and be with the kids. All you good people have a warm, peaceful evening. |

In talking with the social worker today and the child life specialist, I was urged to have the talk with Travis. I have been keeping Travis in the loop, gradually introducing more information - telling him in the beginning "Dad is very sick and gets special medicine in the hospital", then "Dad has cancer and he has really good doctors who give him medicine to help him get better" and the other night "Sometimes people who have cancer die". Travis changed the subject with that last one.
I mustered up the courage this evening and gathered the kids, luring them with Oreo shakes. Of course my imagined scenario was thwarted by a phone call and greedy consumption of shakes. Nevertheless, we all sat together and I began, "Travis, you know how Dad has been getting special medicine? Well, the medicine isn't working. Dad is still very sick and there is no more medicine for him. Remember how I told you that sometimes people with cancer die? Well, Dad is going to die. We are all going to die some day, but Dad will die soon." Travis fidgeted during this monologue and smiled and gestured at his sisters as if he was ignoring me. I held his hand and told him I was sad that Dad was going to die. He immediately gave me a hug and a kiss and I gushed that his hug made me feel so much better. He began to cry. I told him it's okay to be sad, it's okay to cry, it's also okay to be happy and laugh when you remember the silly things Dad did. I told him his body may be gone, but Dad is always in your heart. In all our hearts. We're all going to miss him but we are still a family and we have lots of people who love us and will help us. I told him if he is sad, he can talk to me, his sisters, his Grandma, teacher, anyone he chooses. He can say "Mom, I'm sad", "Mom, I miss Dad." We hugged and have moved on to a Disney movie. I was so concerned, judging by his reaction to our previous conversation, that he would be closed off to continuing the topic. And we NEEDED to talk. Not knowing when that final day will come, I didn't want to surprise him with that news. I'm very relieved and so proud of him. We WILL get through this. |
