 A Civil War cannon on Government Street in midtown Mobile, Ala., was painted in colorful hues to recognize Pride Month during the month of June 2022. (John Sharp/[email protected]). Mobile police have charged a man with criminal mischief for defacing a landmark cannon painted in rainbow colors for LGBTQ Pride Month. At least one supporter of the pride paint sees him as a pawn used by someone else. According to information released by the Mobile Police Department, officers responded to a call at about 12:39 a.m. on Wednesday, reporting that someone was painting the cannon at the intersection of Government , Old Government and Houston streets. .. The cannon is usually black, but by long tradition is repainted in the colors of the team that wins the annual football game between Murphy and McGill-Toolen high schools. It’s also occasional painted in honor of social causes, such as pink paint for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On May 28, for the first time, the city allowed it to be painted in rainbow colors to mark LGBTQ Pride Month. That color scheme was supposed to last until June 20. In Wednesday morning’s incident, 37-year-old Phillip Douglas Dean was arrested and charged “with criminal mischief and outstanding warrants.” The cannon was left mostly covered in black paint, though traces of the rainbow remained. .. “I can guarantee you that he did not buy the paint or the brushes or care to do that,” said Lucy Gafford, executive director of the Mobile Arts Council. “He was obviously taken advantage of.” .. She said she thought Dean was the victim of somebody who used a disadvantaged man to take the fall for the act, a tactic she called cowardly. I wouldn't fault someone of a diminished mental capacity.
Find the asshole(s) that put him/them up to defacing property, then fire them from that cannon, if it still works.
