Good, let’s hope it is the beginning of the end for China.

I’d like to see Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia and whoever else gang up and kick Chinas ass.

The chinese have been pretty froggy lately.   They sailed their carrier group past both china and japan.  It's a shame everyone in the region hates the japs because a bloc consisting of Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, The Phillipines, Indonesia and Thailand would be a fairly stout group to help stare down the CCP.   They couldn't do it on their own but it would certainly give the chinese another major headache.

anything that starts with china will be very fast. either the Navy is absolute shit & collapses in a few days or it is dominant  & destroys the SE ASIAN rivals. and everyone backs off. .

there is no 3rd option. IMO samw with tiawan if it goes hot it will be over in less than 2 weeks

Agreed; China would have to go on a Great Yellow Fleet cruise and roll over each country separately and very quickly before those countries could join up together.  I know most of the countries in the South China Sea area have agreements but whether they'd actually put aside their differences and stand by those agreements remains to be seen. The longer it takes China the lower their chances of taking Taiwan- which is their ultimate prize (One China policy crap).  Every projection I've seen has them beating Taiwan one on one but it taking a heavy toll; without the full force of their navy they'd bog down pretty quickly and it'd become a war of attrition.  If they take Taiwan first (and the US and Japan don't intervene) they aren't going to have enough assets left to take the rest of the area.

If the US, Korea and Japan join the fray China fails miserably and loses much face.  I think Russia would sit this one out even if we did get involved.  Putin puts on a show but he's no idiot and he knows his economy sucks, his military sucks and his only wild card is his nukes which, given the state of the rest of their military, there's no telling how many of those would even ignite much less go where they're supposed to- and I don't think he's crazy enough to start a nuke shoot.  The Chinese, yeah, they might, but I don't think the Russians would.  Russia isn't happy about this Chinese flu right now either, their numbers (that they're admitting to) are on the rise.

Not a poli-sci major though so I'm probably getting everything wrong.

I think the best buffer against China would be a re-militarized Japan.

Hopefully we're going to sell Japan a few hundred F-35's and some F-15X missile trucks to make up for fucking Obama taking away their Raptor purchase.

You realize this is hardly news to begin with?

China playing fuck fuck games in the "South China Sea" is basically a weekly thing.

They even have a bunch of boats they dress up as fishing vessels so they can fuck with other countries.

The last time China's military shot at anyone besides their own citizens was in the 1980s.  We have been at war for 20 straight years.  The Chinese think they've got a "modern" military but, really, they're like me: lots of toys but very little experience and will probably die in the first five minutes of a firefight (you may split up my gear).

I know it's very stupid to underestimate your enemies but I really believe the Chinese are just so much cannon-fodder.  The only thing that might hold the US back from a rapid and total victory is our own political in-fighting.  I hope the standing orders include lots and lots of unrestrained violence; in which case it could be over before Pelosi, Schumer, and AOC can run to China's rescue.

ETA: Like fuck your "carrier," fuck your man-made-islands, we just mined the shit out of Shenzen and Shanghai, all visas revoked, and we're re-opening Manzanar.

Naval mines.  No discussion about containing communist china has any validity at all without them.  Naval mines playing a pivotal part in the containment of communist china indicates that the person including them in the discussion has a clear and thoughtful mind.

How is the Malaysian Navy?

If Wikipedia can be trusted, it seems like they have decent equipment: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Malaysian_Navy

15,000 active personnel (2003)[1][2]
2 Submarines
6 Frigate + (2 u/c)
6 Corvette
8 Offshore patrol vessels + (2 u/c)
18 Fast attack craft
17 Fast interceptor craft
4 Minesweeper
2 Multi-purpose support ship
3 Auxiliary ship
1 Submarine rescue ship
3 Training ships
3 Hydrographic survey vessels
12 Helicopters
12 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)

Are their personnel trained anything like US sailors?
View Quote

Looking at the actual vessels and equipment, the Malaysian Navy would be a speed bump for the PLAN.

Its unknown at this point if the majority of those frigates are even operational (Wikipedia suggests not, and refers to some of their missile systems not being installed yet as of 2019), and the extent of their capabilities would be limited to lobbing a couple dozen Exocets, at best.

If Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, SK, Singapore, Thailand, and India all combined their forces into a single unified command, and put aside all of their mutual distrust and past hate...they might come close to having parity of hulls and capabilities in comparison to the PLAN.

If the USN is not in play, south east Asia is going to get sporty, and the other regional players aren't going to fair well.

China Asshole. They will destroy the entire planet if given the chance. Just last week there was an article about them dragging nets through Indonesia fishing grounds, wrecking the bottom with nets which will pretty much ruin the fishing. China needs the rest of the world to tell them to fuck off.

I could see China just steaming fleets of COSCO freighters into the mine fields to clear them. Wonder how many mines a container ship could soak up before going down, if deliberately loaded to be buoyant...?

Plus they already have 29 minesweepers...more of those than most regional players have total combatant vessels.

https://www.usni.org/magazines/proceedings/2018/may/how-we-lost-great-pacific-war

I still fear that essay will become prophetic.

Japan, Australia and Taiwan need to be nuclear powers last week. That's about the only thing that will be the CCP pause in the region. The US needs to be very open and proactive with other nations and their defenses. Perhaps revise NATO and include in that the PACRIM nations.

Australia with nukes is like E. DeGeneres with full-auto MG42 . They both can afford it if there wasn't a abyss of lack of will .
