They aren’t organic riots a lot of the time now. It’s a form of political manipulation. |

Minneapolis is around 360,000 and St. Paul is roughly 300,000. The Twin Cities metro area is around 3.5 million people. This is expanding the way I expected. I've attended the 2008 RNC in St. Paul, and have watched the occupy movement. The RNC was eye opening. There was a march through the city which had a very large police presence. The marchers were expecting to be pepper strayed during a protest march, and they were excited about the march. There was a small group which stood out from the rest. They were focused and had masks. This group broke off from the main group at some point and walked through the downtown smashing windows and breaking things. Based on reports and arrests, most of these agitators were from across the country. They seem to travel to areas where they can hide in a larger protest. Occupy Oakland had a similar group using the larger protest to cover for their vandalism. Most of the protesters were peaceful, but there was a small group vandalizing the buildings along the march route. What I expect is as follows. The first night is relatively peaceful, mostly protesters angry at the death. The second night becomes violent as 'professional agitators' get started. These people move around the crowd and work up the protesters and instigate the riots. The third night gets worse as they professionals have worked up a battle plan. I fear for the weekend as more of these professional rioters move into the city. Friday and Saturday nights will be absolutely devastating to the area, a lot of buildings will be burned and people hurt. What was interesting, the FOX9 news reporter tonight brought up a very similar observation. In his report, he estimated around 30 to 40 active rioters moving around the crowd. They could be identified because they all carried baseball bats or golf clubs. The reporter watched them probe the precinct building entrances several times before the final assault when the building was set on fire. He also had heard that the same small group of people were responsible for many of the fires. He speculated that if the cops had arrested these people early on, there wouldn't have been the destruction the area has received. He also said that there was a large group of people were simply there to record and watch the event, but didn't seem too invested in protesting or rioting. There were many people protesting the death, but they were overshadowed by the larger group recording, and their message was drown out by the destruction of the small group of agitators. Interesting, Martial Law needs to be declared. I fear we've passed the stage of peaceful resolution. A heavy handed response will get a lot of people hurt. A firm response, which should have been used from the start, will surprise and anger many of the protesters, and will get a violent response. Lots of property damage, and injuries. It's easier to start with strict rules and then relax them, than it is to start with relaxed rules and then tighten them. Unfortunately, the lesson of the RNC was lost. St. Paul was criticized for for being overbearing with security, but they seemed to have worked it correctly for the most part. Just before the protest march, I walked by rows of officers armed with industrial sized canisters of pepper spray, and they used them quite freely. The protester 'medics' were busy washing out the eyes of the marchers along the route. The cops were quick to respond to window breaking and while there was damage, there wasn't a lot of vandalism beyond broken windows and some trash cans thrown around. Nothing set on fire that I remember, and you probably couldn't tell anything happened a week later after repairs were made. Funny side note, I was at the RNC with my teenage daughter. We were walking down a street after the march when she asked me, "What's that horrible smell?". I responded, "Hippies". We turned a corner and there were the marchers relaxing in the shade, and some getting their eyes flushed. They could be smelled from over half a block away. |
